"Soru, Tekkai, Geppo, Kami-e, Rankyaku, and Shigan, these six techniques are collectively known as Rokushiki, or the Six Powers. They represent the pinnacle of physical mastery, pushing the limits of human capability!"
"The power of Rokushiki is immense. If you manage to master all six, you'll even stand a chance against Devil Fruit users. But learning them isn't easy, it demands grueling training and relentless discipline!"
"Now, let me walk you through each technique!"
"Soru, one of Rokushiki's movement techniques. By stomping the ground dozens of times within a mere 0.36 seconds, it generates explosive propulsion that allows for ultra-high-speed movement. To an opponent, it looks like you've vanished into thin air. It's incredibly practical!"
"Tekkai is a defensive technique. By hardening well-trained muscles to their limit, the user achieves a body as tough as iron, impervious to bullets and blades. Its downside is immobility while in use, but there are exceptions. Within the World Government's intelligence agency, there are agents capable of maintaining Tekkai while moving!"
"Geppo is an aerial variation of Soru. By kicking off the air with immense force, one can remain airborne, like climbing invisible steps. It can't keep you in the air forever, but it's perfect for attacking from angles your enemies won't expect!"
"…"
Inside the indoor training arena of Building 14, fifty elite-class cadets sat gathered, listening intently as Zephyr and several instructors demonstrated Rokushiki atop a 30-by-30-meter platform.
From theory to practice, they explained the techniques in increasing depth.
Several instructors, adept in Rokushiki themselves, took turns showcasing each move, shattering a massive boulder into fragments with just a few strikes.
Cross and a few others had previously displayed Rokushiki techniques during mock combat, which had piqued the curiosity of many cadets. Not one to hold back, Zephyr decided to teach the techniques to everyone.
Cross paid close attention throughout the lesson. Though he had picked up a few Rokushiki moves by observing CP9 agents like Rob Lucci, Elmo, and Gadriel, his training had been entirely self-taught; rough, unrefined, and far from complete. Compared to those who had received formal instruction, he was still lacking.
However, Zephyr made it clear: everyone was encouraged to at least learn some of the Six Powers. Based on their fighting style, each cadet could choose one or two techniques to focus on.
That said, Rokushiki training wasn't mandatory. It was left up to each cadet's personal interest.
For instance, swordsmen or Devil Fruit users might not need Rokushiki at all to continue developing their combat abilities.
"Alright, that wraps up our Rokushiki overview for today," Zephyr said, taking a sip of water. "If you're interested, you can explore it further in martial arts class, or come to us directly. Now, let's move on to today's sparring drills."
As Zephyr and the other instructors stepped down from the platform, a hush fell over the room. The cadets exchanged glances, some seemingly sizing each other up, others waiting for someone else to go first.
Soon, a young man with chestnut-brown hair stepped forward. He walked to the nearby weapons rack and picked up a practice katana with an unsharpened blade, then made his way nervously onto the platform.
"Yukimura, huh…" Zephyr muttered as his eyes swept across the crowd. "Who's up next?"
Moments later, a tall cadet with a long, angular face rose from the crowd. His long blond hair was tied into a short ponytail. He grabbed a jitte from the weapons rack and stepped onto the platform to face Yukimura.
Seeing the two opponents in place, Zephyr's voice rang out, firm and commanding:
"Yukimura versus Kibin, begin!"
"Please go easy on me!"
"Likewise, let's both do our best!"
The two bowed to each other respectfully before charging in at the same time.
Sparks flew as the blunt katana and iron jitte clashed. A flurry of clangs rang out across the room, the sound of steel on steel. Each strike left trails of fire in the air as metal scraped violently against metal.
Cross watched for a few moments, then turned away, deep in thought, replaying the Rokushiki demonstrations in his mind.
Yukimura and Kibin were solid fighters, probably among the top twenty out of the fifty elite cadets. Far above the ordinary class, sure. But to Cross, they still weren't much of a threat.
In the elite class, Cross was undisputed in swordsmanship. Yukimura wouldn't last three exchanges against him.
In terms of hand-to-hand combat, the strongest, aside from Cross, was Shuzo.
As a member of the Longarm Tribe, he had the advantage of unusually long limbs and had learned several Rokushiki techniques early on under Zephyr's guidance. His physical strength was formidable.
As for firearms, the top sharpshooter was a cadet named Daddy Masterson. With a gift for marksmanship and blindingly fast draw speed, he fought with a body full of pistols, landing rapid and precise shots. Even his instructor had praised him repeatedly, saying he might become the best gunman in the Marines one day.
Then there were the Devil Fruit users.
And this year's batch was packed with them. Including Cross, there were nearly ten, some wielding incredibly rare abilities, even a Logia-type.
That said, their combat skills were… peculiar. When it came to swordsmanship, martial arts, or shooting, most were mediocre at best. Even Smoker, who possessed the rare Smoke-Smoke Fruit, wasn't particularly impressive on his own.
But once they combined their Devil Fruit powers into the fight, their strength skyrocketed exponentially, surpassing most of the other elite cadets.
Take Smoker for example. Unless Cross used a seastone weapon, specifically designed to counter Devil Fruit powers, he wouldn't stand a chance.
There was just no way around it. Logia-types could transform into their element, rendering most physical attacks useless. You couldn't hit them, but they could definitely hit you. It was absurdly one-sided.
Just as Cross was lost in thought, reviewing the practical applications of Rokushiki, a voice called out beside him.
"Cross. Want to get in a round?"
Startled, Cross looked up, and realized the match had already changed. Yukimura and Kibin were gone. Standing in their place was a blond man with a cold, expressionless face and a thuggish aura.
"Gasparde. You're challenging me?"
Cross stood up, puzzled.
"I heard you're a Devil Fruit user too," Gasparde said, his voice flat. "But none of us have seen your power in action yet. I thought it's time someone got a look. You won't turn me down, will you?"
