Chapter 279: Chapter 455: Enel—Am I Too Strong?
Hawkins' expression changed abruptly. The moment Enel finished speaking, his figure vanished, leaving only arcs of electricity crackling in place.
Kid was equally shocked, as a leg suddenly filled his vision.
Fortunately, Kid's reaction speed was fast—he instinctively activated Armament Haki to cover his head.
But it was still useless. A sharp pain struck his skull, and the powerful impact lifted him off the ground, sending him flying backward.
"Lightning Speed," Enel said softly.
At the same time, he landed precisely where Kid had been standing, while Kid was sent hurtling into the dense forest, crashing headfirst and kicking up a cloud of dust.
Seeing his captain kicked aside right in front of him, Killer was stunned. However, his reflexes were quick, his twin scimitars were instantly coated with Armament Haki, and after a brief moment of preparation, he lunged at Enel.
Enel didn't move. He simply raised a finger in Killer's direction and murmured:
"50 Million Volt—Lightning Serpent."
With that, a bright flash of electricity surged from his fingertip. The next second, a giant serpent made of pure lightning materialized and lunged straight at Killer.
Burnt smoke immediately rose from Killer's body. The once-ferocious fighter lost all momentum and collapsed mid-air, crashing to the ground.
"Killer!!!"
Emerging from the dust, Kid's eyes widened in rage.
Kid was an arrogant man, known for his violent and authoritarian rule over the Kid Pirates—hence his title, "Captain."
In truth, within the Kid Pirates, almost no one could be considered his true companion. They were more like subordinates. Only Killer was different, he was the one person Kid could genuinely trust, the only partner he could rely on.
The two were like brothers, and even in his most furious moments, Kid would still listen to Killer's advice.
But now, seeing his closest comrade struck down in an instant, his body smoking and his fate uncertain, Kid was completely enraged.
He let out a furious roar, pulled a dagger from his waist, and charged straight at Enel.
"Die, you bastard!!!" Kid roared.
Enel raised an eyebrow, clearly unimpressed by such an unrefined attack.
Once again, he extended his arm, arcs of electricity crackling at his fingertip. Just as he was about to strike, another person made their move—Hawkins.
Though previously hostile toward Kid, Hawkins now had no choice but to intervene. After all, there was an unspoken rule among pirates, even among those who despised each other, when faced with an overwhelmingly powerful enemy, they would sometimes join forces.
The Seven Warlords of the Sea had often demonstrated this kind of tactical cooperation. Even the Four Emperors had moments when they put aside hostilities in the face of Marine pressure.
For the members of the Worst Generation, it was no different.
They may have clashed and even killed each other in the past, but when confronted with an opponent as terrifying as Enel, they instinctively banded together for survival.
Just as they had against Douglas Bullet. Just as they had against Marine Admiral Borsalino at Sabaody Archipelago.
Hawkins understood this well—he and Kid may be on equal footing, but against Enel, he knew he was nothing more than an ant.
If Enel were to kill Kid now, it wouldn't just be a question of whether Hawkins would be targeted next. More importantly, the Log Pose to Laugh Tale that Kid possessed would be lost.
If that happened, Hawkins' entire trip here would be for nothing.
Which meant, regardless of past grudges, he had to act now.
"The wind of Wano…" Hawkins muttered.
Gripping his massive straw longsword, he leaped into the air, his demonic face mask gleaming as he slashed toward Enel's head.
"Should I call this a wise choice or a foolish one?" Enel smirked.
He didn't move—his fingers still crackled with electricity—but with his other hand, he lifted his golden staff to block Hawkins' attack.
In the next instant, Enel's lightning shot forward, streaking straight toward Kid.
However, Kid's eyes gleamed—his Devil Fruit ability activated in an instant.
Rather than dodge, he threw his dagger to the side. As it flew, the blade sparked with arcs of electricity.
The lightning that had been heading straight for Kid suddenly veered off course, drawn toward the dagger instead.
"Haha… As you said, my ability is pretty interesting, isn't it?" Kid grinned savagely, his tone triumphant.
Enel was mildly surprised, he hadn't expected Kid to actually alter the trajectory of his attack.
Although it had been a casual shot on Enel's part, it was still a high-powered lightning strike.
In truth, Kid's Devil Fruit ability was quite formidable. It functioned similarly to electromagnetism. Though it wasn't as overwhelming as Enel's Rumble-Rumble Fruit, with careful manipulation, it could indeed influence Enel's lightning to a certain degree.
And that slight deviation in trajectory was enough for Kid to close the distance.
Retracting his outstretched arm, Kid's magnetic power activated. The dagger he had thrown instantly returned to his palm.
Coating it with Armament Haki, he bared his teeth and roared:
"Die, Enel!!!"
At a glance, it seemed like a dangerous situation.
But Enel remained unfazed.
He had plenty of ways to counter this, he could simply unleash a massive surge of lightning to engulf everything around him. If Kid dared to charge in, he'd be marching straight to his own death.
However, there was one problem, if he used such an attack, it might also damage the Log Pose in the small ship nearby.
If that happened… His Highness would definitely kill him.
"Damn… If I had my Observation Haki active, I wouldn't even have to think about all this. Is it my fault for being too arrogant? Maybe I really am just too strong?" Enel mused to himself, still calm even in the middle of combat.
The truth was, if he used advanced Observation Haki to predict the future, neither Kid nor Hawkins would pose any threat at all.
But unlike that freak Katakuri, Enel wasn't the type to constantly rely on foresight—after all, where was the fun in that?
So, he rarely used Observation Haki.
In a flash of light, Enel vanished from sight just as Kid lunged forward, causing Hawkins' sword strike to miss completely.
Jolted by the failed attack, Hawkins hurriedly withdrew his blade but by then, Enel had already appeared behind him.
"Thunderstorm—Thunder Dragon." Enel murmured, extending his palm.
In an instant, a massive Thunder Dragon erupted from his hand.
As it soared forward, it expanded into a colossal serpent of lightning, completely swallowing Hawkins' straw form.
"Bastard!!!" Kid roared in fury.
The enormous thunderbolt didn't stop after consuming Hawkins—it shot forward at blinding speed, closing in on Kid in an instant.
Hawkins' attack hadn't even landed yet. That's how fast this was.
Sure enough, Kid was swallowed up as well.
The two fighters were blasted away at the same time, their bodies flung into the distant jungle amidst a violent explosion.
Enel smirked, satisfied.
But before he could enjoy his victory, a sharp, metallic DJ sound suddenly rang out.
Just as he turned toward the source, his waist exploded—his body was split clean in half!
It was Scratchmen Apoo!
This guy didn't waste time with any taunts. The moment he struck Enel, he immediately bolted toward the ship.
Earlier, Kid's magnetic ability had drawn in a massive pile of gold coins, revealing a small, battered chest in the process.
Apoo grabbed the box, flipped it open.
And inside… was a Log Pose to Laugh Tale!
"No way…!" Apoo's eyes lit up with excitement.
