Chapter 15: Adam
Adam watched Sophia return to her apartment from the doorway. He had decided. He would merely be a friend to her. He had initially been reluctant to discuss his job loss with Sophia.
It was because he was attracted to her. He feared her opinion of him.
However, that emotion was now repressed. He had buried it deep within himself. Therefore, Sophia's opinion of him was no longer important. He was merely a companion.
When Sophia had asked if he was going back to the office tomorrow he initially gave a vague answer. But now he felt different. He could be honest with her.
He smiled a strange kind of smile. It was a mix of amusement and something else. "Actually I won't be going to the office anymore," he said.
Sophia's face filled with concern. She took a step closer to him. "Why?" she asked. "What happened?"
Adam let out a short laugh. He told her the truth. "They kicked me out," he said. The words sounded absurd even to him.
Sophia was shocked. She stared at him with wide eyes. "They fired you?" she asked. But the most surprising thing was Adam's reaction. He was saying this terrible news as if it were a joke. He was smiling. He was even laughing a little.
"Why are you taking this so lightly?" Sophia asked. Her concern deepened. She thought he had lost his mind.
Adam's smile widened. "Because I got a better job," he said. "I don't have to give it much time. And they are paying me very well."
Sophia's worried expression finally relaxed. A look of relief washed over her face. "That's great news," she said. She was genuinely happy for him. "You have to treat me to celebrate."
Adam's smile was genuine now too. "I'll give you a treat whenever you say," he said. He liked the sound of that. Spending time with her as a friend.
Sophia smiled and pointed at the empty bowl in his hand. "Just give me the bowl back tomorrow when you're done," she said. She turned and walked away. Adam watched her go. He just nodded with a smile on his face. He felt a quiet contentment.
He went back inside after shutting the door. He gazed at the empty bowl of noodles he was holding. He drained the last of the broth. He became aware of Sophia's exceptional culinary skills.
It had been ages since he had eaten anything prepared by anyone else. He prepared his own meals every time. Additionally, he did not think his own cooking was very good. Sophia's noodles were far superior.
After carefully cleaning Sophia's bowl, he set it on the spotless counter to air dry.
Tomorrow, he would give it back to her. He returned to his bed and lay down. Once more, he gazed at the ceiling. He had to consider his next move.
He was rich now. Two and a half million dollars. It was a sum that changed lives. However, he was also overcome with fear. This app scared him. He was concerned despite his wealth.
His bank statement would raise suspicions. How did Adam get so wealthy all of a sudden? From where did it originate? There would be a never-ending stream of questions.
He did not want to rely on this app too much. Although it was a miracle, there was a risk.
He recalled the app's message. The leveling up one. He needed to make $3,000 from investments in order to get to Level 3. An idea was born out of the thought.
He ought to make stock market investments. That would be a respectable way to make money. It would help to explain his wealth. Additionally, it would enable him to level up the app. It was the ideal answer.
He took a seat. He had a clear head. He had a strategy. He grabbed his phone. He visited the app store. He looked for an app that traded stocks. He downloaded the most widely used one.
Long ago, he had already made an account. He dreamed of a better life and had some extra cash for a short time. Since he never had enough cash to make an actual investment, he had never used it. He typed in his previous login information.
The application launched. He began checking out the various stocks. He was trying to find something he could purchase. His knowledge of the market was limited.
He was merely perusing the names of businesses. A list of the day's top winners and losers was presented to him. The numbers on the screen were a bewildering combination of red and green.
The stock market app abruptly shut down. For a moment, his phone's screen went blank. Then his home screen appeared again. As usual, all of his app icons were visible there.
Adam was taken aback. He gazed at the screen. He believed his phone had malfunctioned. Why did the home screen appear on my phone all of a sudden? He pondered. My app closed; why? Although it was odd, he simply thought it was a minor glitch in the new phone. He opened the stock market app once more.
