Chapter 4: Chapter 4: The Sky Above and Secrets Below
The morning sun bathed the Quidditch playground in a golden glow, illuminating the vibrant green grass and the towering stands that surrounded the expansive field. The air was crisp, carrying a faint hint of dew, and the students of Eastford Academy stood in a semi-circle, clutching their brooms with varying expressions of excitement and nervousness. Oliver, Lily, and Ethan were among them, their hearts pounding as they prepared for their first flying lesson.
The playground was a marvel of magical engineering. It featured tall golden hoops on either end, marking the goals for Quidditch matches. The field was lined with silver markings that glimmered faintly in the sunlight, enchanted to guide players during matches. Above, the sky was a perfect expanse of blue, dotted with a few fluffy clouds. The atmosphere was alive with anticipation.
"I can't believe we're finally going to learn how to fly," Oliver whispered, gripping his broom tightly. He couldn't help but smile at the thought of soaring above the academy.
Lily adjusted her grip on her broom, her black cat, Midnight, perched on her shoulder. "I just hope I don't make a fool of myself," she said nervously.
Ethan, as usual, was brimming with confidence. "Flying's easy. My brother and I used to sneak out with his old broom all the time. Just follow my lead, Lily."
Before Lily could respond, the crowd's murmurs ceased as their professor arrived. He was a strikingly handsome young man, with sharp features and a confident stride. Dressed in a tailored black blazer, black pants, and a crisp white shirt, he exuded an air of authority and charm. His short, neatly styled black hair and piercing blue eyes made him the center of attention—and not just for his teaching credentials. Several of the girls in the group exchanged hushed whispers and dreamy looks as he approached.
"Good morning, students," the professor began, his voice smooth and commanding. "I am Professor Adrian Blackthorn, your flying instructor and Quidditch coach. Today, we'll cover the basics of broom flying. But before that, let me give you a brief introduction to the game of Quidditch."
He gestured to the golden hoops and explained, "Quidditch is a sport that combines strategy, skill, and teamwork. Players are divided into four positions: Chasers, Beaters, Keepers, and Seekers. The objective is to score points by throwing the Quaffle through the opposing team's hoops, while avoiding Bludgers and trying to catch the Golden Snitch. But flying is the foundation of it all, so let's focus on that for now."
Professor Blackthorn's enthusiasm was infectious, and even the most nervous students found themselves eager to begin.
"Now," he said, pacing in front of the group, "place your broomsticks on the ground and stand beside them. Stretch out your hand and say, 'Up!' with confidence."
Oliver followed the instructions, his heart thudding in his chest. "Up!" he commanded, and to his amazement, the broom jumped into his hand on the first try.
Ethan's broom obeyed just as easily, and he smirked. "Told you it's not that hard," he said, nudging Oliver with his elbow.
Lily, however, was struggling. Her broom stubbornly refused to budge, lying motionless on the ground despite her repeated attempts. Midnight, perched nearby, watched with what could only be described as feline amusement. "Up! Please, up!" Lily groaned, her cheeks turning pink as a few other students snickered.
Meanwhile, other students were having their own challenges. One boy accidentally stepped on his broom, causing it to whip around and smack him in the face. Another girl's broom shot up with such force that it nearly hit her chin, leaving her yelping in surprise. Laughter rippled through the group, even as Professor Blackthorn clapped his hands for attention.
"Focus, everyone. Flying requires a calm mind and clear intent," he reminded them. "Let's move on to the next step."
With his guidance, the students mounted their brooms and practiced hovering a few feet off the ground. Oliver felt a thrill of exhilaration as his broom lifted smoothly, the wind rushing past his face.
Ethan was equally at ease, zipping around in short bursts and grinning broadly. "This is awesome!" he called out.
For Lily, however, things weren't going as smoothly. Her broom wobbled precariously, and she yelped as it spun in circles. "Help!" she cried, clutching the handle for dear life. Professor Blackthorn stepped in, gently stabilizing her broom and offering encouragement.
Once the students who managed to hover were comfortable, Professor Blackthorn allowed them to fly higher. Oliver soared above the field, his heart pounding with joy. From his vantage point, he could see the sprawling campus of Eastford Academy, the glittering lake, and the distant town nestled in the valley. The view was breathtaking, and for a moment, Oliver felt completely free.
After the exhilarating lesson, the students gathered their brooms and headed to the dining hall for lunch. The hall buzzed with chatter about their first flying experience, and even Lily managed to laugh at her earlier struggles. Ethan, ever the joker, imitated her spinning broom, earning both groans and giggles from their friends.
After lunch, the trio made their way to the Herbology classroom, located in a large glass greenhouse behind the academy. The greenhouse was a wonder in itself, filled with vibrant magical plants of all shapes and sizes. Some plants glowed faintly, others emitted soothing hums, and a few even seemed to move of their own accord.
Their professor, a middle-aged woman with curly auburn hair and a kind smile, introduced herself as Professor Camilla Greenthorn. She wore a flowing green robe adorned with leaf patterns and had a soft, melodic voice that immediately put the students at ease.
"Welcome to Herbology," she said, gesturing to the plants around her. "In this class, you'll learn about the properties and care of magical flora. Today, we'll begin with the basics. Each of you will be assigned a plant to care for and study throughout the semester."
Oliver was assigned a small, shimmering plant called a Lumina Blossom, which glowed brighter when it absorbed moonlight. Lily received a Thorned Snapdragon, a plant that growled softly if mishandled. Ethan, much to his amusement, was tasked with caring for a Puffroot, a round, fluffy plant that released puffs of glittery spores when stroked.
The students spent the rest of the class taking notes on their plants and learning about their unique needs. The greenhouse was alive with activity, as well as the occasional sneeze from a student who had gotten too close to a spore-emitting plant.
Later that afternoon, Oliver, Lily, and Ethan decided to visit the academy's library. The library was a massive, multi-story building filled with towering bookshelves and glowing chandeliers that hovered in mid-air. The air was thick with the scent of parchment and ink, and the atmosphere was one of quiet reverence.
"This place is amazing," Lily whispered, her eyes wide as she took in the sheer number of books.
They spent some time browsing the sections on curses, magical combat, and summoning techniques. As Oliver wandered through the aisles, he came across a small, dusty drawer labeled "Lost Books." Curious, he opened it and found an old, hand-written book titled Summonology Guide by the Undead Commander.
Intrigued, Oliver flipped through the pages. The book contained detailed instructions on summoning creatures, forging contracts with skeletons, and even raising small armies of the undead. The handwriting was spidery and uneven, and the book's edges were worn, as though it had been handled many times long ago.
Oliver brought the book to the librarian, a stern but fair woman with glasses perched on her nose. "Excuse me, ma'am. Can I borrow this?" he asked.
The librarian examined the book and nodded. "This has been in the Lost Books section for years. No one has shown any interest in it until now. You may take it."
With the book safely tucked into his bag, Oliver rejoined his friends and completed their homework in the library. As the sun set, they returned to their hostel for dinner. The day had been long, but their excitement for what lay ahead kept their energy high.
That night, as Oliver sat by his window reading the Summonology Guide by the light of the moon, he discovered a folded map tucked between the pages. The map depicted Eastford Town and the surrounding forest, with a large red X marked deep within the woods. Curiosity sparked within him, but he knew he'd have to wait until the weekend to explore.
As Oliver drifted off to sleep, the book resting on his nightstand, he couldn't help but feel a growing fascination with the art of summoning. Tomorrow's Summonology class promised to be an adventure in itself, and he couldn't wait to see what secrets it held.
