Office Wars: Love Under Fire

Chapter 6: Chapter 6: Cracks in the Armor

The office was unusually quiet the next evening, with most of the staff already gone for the day. Evelyn had stayed behind, determined to perfect the revisions for the client presentation. The glow of her computer screen cast soft shadows on the walls, and the faint hum of the air conditioning was the only sound accompanying her.

A knock at the door startled her, though it was soft enough to feel deliberate. Before she could respond, Lucas stepped inside, his presence filling the room with its usual intensity.

Working late again, he said, his tone more an observation than a question.

Evelyn glanced up briefly. Someone has to make sure this project doesn't fall apart.

He closed the door behind him, walking further into the room. His tie was loosened, and the top two buttons of his shirt were undone, a rare glimpse of casualness that threw her off guard.

You think I don't notice how much you've taken on, he said after a moment, his voice quieter now.

Evelyn paused, her fingers still hovering over the keyboard. His words were unexpected, and she didn't know how to respond.

I can handle it, she finally said.

Lucas studied her, his gaze piercing in a way that made her shift uncomfortably in her chair. You always say that, but when was the last time you took a moment for yourself?

She leaned back slightly, crossing her arms. I'm not here to be comfortable, Lucas. I'm here to prove myself.

His lips curved into something that wasn't quite a smile but wasn't the cold detachment she was used to, either. And who exactly are you trying to prove yourself to?

The question caught her off guard, the vulnerability behind it sinking into her like a blade. She looked away, her chest tightening as the words she wanted to say clashed with the ones she couldn't.

The Shift in the Room

Lucas moved closer, leaning against the edge of the desk across from her. He didn't speak, letting the silence stretch until it became unbearable. Evelyn glanced at him, her guard slipping just enough for him to see the weariness in her eyes.

You push yourself too hard, he said, softer this time. And for what? Approval from people who will never see you the way you deserve?

Her throat tightened, and she hated how his words hit closer to the truth than she wanted to admit. She turned back to her computer, her voice colder than intended. I don't need your analysis, Lucas.

No, but you need to hear it, he said simply.

Before she could respond, he reached out, his hand brushing hers as he gently closed the laptop. The contact was brief but electric, sending a jolt up her arm. She froze, the unexpected intimacy of the moment rendering her speechless.

You're allowed to take a break, he said, his voice low but firm.

Her pulse raced as she looked up at him, the tension between them thick and undeniable. She opened her mouth to argue, but the words died on her tongue as his gaze dropped briefly to her lips before returning to her eyes.

Lucas, she started, her voice barely a whisper.

He straightened, taking a step back as if the closeness was too much even for him. His jaw tightened, and the mask of control slipped back into place.

You're stronger than you think, Evelyn, he said. Don't let anyone including yourself forget that.

Without another word, he turned and walked out of the room, leaving her alone with the storm he'd stirred within her.
