Chapter 4: Chapter 4: Lines We Can’t Cross
The office was quieter than usual in the late afternoon. Most employees had either stepped out for meetings or were working silently at their desks. Evelyn welcomed the reprieve as she sat in the small conference room, organizing notes for the next phase of the project. Her pen scratched against the paper as she jotted down ideas, her focus unwavering.
She wasn't expecting Lucas to walk in, his presence filling the space before she even looked up.
"I thought you'd be in your office," she said without preamble, not bothering to meet his gaze.
He pulled out the chair across from her, the scrape of wood against the floor pulling her attention. His expression was calm, unreadable, but his presence seemed more deliberate than usual.
"Sometimes it's better to step away from the desk," he said casually. His voice carried the same quiet authority that always managed to get under her skin.
Evelyn didn't respond, her pen hovering over her notes as she waited for him to continue.
I wanted to discuss the next step in the project," Lucas said. "The client was impressed, but they're expecting us to elevate the presentation even further. I need you to brainstorm creative approaches with the marketing team.
Evelyn's shoulders tensed, but she kept her expression neutral. "I'm already ahead of you. I've scheduled a meeting with the team tomorrow morning to go over potential ideas."
His brow lifted slightly, and there was a flicker of approval in his eyes. "Good. You're starting to think like a leader."
Her gaze snapped to his. The compliment, while subtle, caught her off guard. She wasn't sure if it was meant to encourage or challenge her, but either way, it made her pulse quicken.
You've got a habit of showing up unannounced," she said, redirecting the conversation. "Should I start expecting you to monitor my every move?
Lucas leaned back in his chair, his posture relaxed but his gaze intent. "Only if I think it's necessary."
The silence that followed was thick, laced with the tension they both refused to acknowledge aloud. Evelyn refused to look away first, her resolve unwavering even as the weight of his gaze pressed down on her.
"Anything else?" she asked, her tone sharper than she intended.
Lucas didn't answer immediately. Instead, he stood, his movements slow and deliberate. "That's all—for now.
Before leaving, he paused by the door, glancing back at her. "Don't burn yourself out, Carter. You'll need your energy for what's ahead.
The words lingered in the air long after he was gone.
Later That Evening
Evelyn sat in her apartment, her laptop glowing faintly on the coffee table. The day's events replayed in her mind, and despite her best efforts, she couldn't stop thinking about Lucas.
There was something about him—an unpredictability that both infuriated and intrigued her. He was impossible to pin down, his actions deliberate yet inexplicably complex. She hated the way he unsettled her, hated the way he made her question herself.
She shook her head, pushing the thoughts aside. There was no time to dwell on Lucas Grey. Tomorrow would bring another wave of challenges, and she needed to be ready.
As she leaned back on the couch, Evelyn allowed herself one indulgent thought: What if the walls Lucas had built weren't as impenetrable as they seemed?
