Chapter 14
Chapter 14
Even during summer break, I come to school almost every day.
Mornings are for club activities, lunch at the school cafeteria, and afternoons with the Video Research Society until evening most of the time.
Sahori-senpai is at the club again...
He's always meddling in practice, and the new captain is getting annoyed.
My friend Koji is also in the basketball club with me, but he's one of the members who nearly lost it after Sahori chewed him out before.
He's pumped to shine in the new team, so he probably hates how Sahori's meddling brings back old team vibes.
Anyway, according to the second-years, Sahori-senpai was already super annoying last year,
and if we lost, he'd go, "Tch, my right hand aches..."
even though there's no injury or anything.
Apparently, he's got some weird chuunibyou thing going on, making the atmosphere awkward.
On the other hand, Airi-senpai encourages the team when we lose and keeps us grounded when we win.
She adjusts her words depending on whether we're doing well or not, and even when we lose, the sight of Airi-senpai motivating us contrasts so harshly with Sahori-senpai's chuunibyou antics,
that in the basketball club,
Airi is the sun! Sahori is just painful.
That's what people used to say, apparently.
But, you know, even though they've retired and have more time, there's a rumor that Airi-senpai and Sahori aren't getting along.
Even when Sahori shows up, she doesn't interact with him during club activities as much as before.
Airi-senpai used to help us inexperienced guys with the basics, and even after she said I'd graduated from basics, I still consulted her about practice menus and playstyles—she was thrilled, saying she's always ready to help and almost gave me her contact info, but I declined. I told her she's a bit too unguarded with how close she gets, so she should be careful.
...Honestly, I'm just scared of beautiful girls. And getting involved with someone who has a boyfriend...
If it were me, even if I were a jerk, I'd feel hurt seeing my girlfriend getting along with another guy.
In the afternoon, at the Video Research Society, Tanaka-kun was,
Tanaka: "In the end! In the end, it's all about people! Humans are most interested in other humans!"
He was passionately arguing that, and I thought, yeah, maybe so.
Tanaka-kun wants to film a documentary or movie centered on humans.
I don't have any particular theme in mind, so I completely forgot about it.
Then, as I was about to head home and passed by the side of the school building,
"..."
Was that the chubby girl who got rejected yesterday?
She was there.
I thought, it's better for both of us if I pretend not to see her!
So I walked past her.
"...Um..."
Oh no. Ignore, ignore!
But she grabbed my shoulder firmly.
"...You're a first-year too, right? You saw what happened yesterday... Can we talk for just a bit?"
"...No, I'd rather not..."
"Sorry, but, um, listen?"
The girl started talking anyway, ignoring me.
And that's how I met that girl,
Yukari Tomonaga.
She asked if I saw her confession yesterday,
(Wouldn't it be more gentlemanly to pretend I didn't know?)
"..."
I shook my head in denial.
"Ehh, fueeeehhh!"
Tomonaga-san suddenly burst into tears!
(Whaaat?! What do I do? What should I do?!)
Curious stares pierced through me!
Unable to stand it, I decided to take her somewhere to escape!
Where?! Where to?!
Somewhere with friends or acquaintances!
Basketball club
Girls' basketball club
→ Video Research Society
I made a mistake.
I picked the absolute worst place.
The Video Research Society is a gathering of slightly eccentric weirdos.
They're good people, but led by Tanaka-kun, it's a group of impulsive and extreme personalities.
She started explaining the reason for her tears, bit by bit.
A long time ago, the guy who rejected her had teased her, but someone helped her out, and she's liked him ever since.
Yesterday, she mustered the courage to confess.
He flat-out rejected her, saying she's not his type.
And Kousuke saw it happen.
That's the gist of it, apparently.
What do you even do with a girl crying over heartbreak?
Tanaka: "...I've got a great idea!"
"Shou said it before. When a human says they've got a great idea, it's almost always a bad one."
Tanaka: "Haha, as expected of Shou-kun! Maybe so?"
And Tanaka-kun's plan was this.
Yukari Tomonaga's revenge
That's the theme.
Kousuke will produce? and help transform Tomonaga-san!
That way, Tomonaga-san can gain something, and Kousuke-kun can overcome his current discomfort around women!
Not everyone is like Mishima-san, you know!
And we'll record it all to screen at the cultural festival!
Let's make a documentary!
Tomonaga-san, what do you think?
Who would even go along with such a flimsy plan...?
Whaaat? Tomonaga-san? You're in?!
Tanaka: "Alright, Kousuke-kun! I'm counting on you!"
Kousuke: "...Me...?"
Tanaka: "Of course! None of us have ever had a girlfriend! If we handle it, we'll create some kind of monster, right?"
And just like that, I was roped into this documentary project.
This was the first step toward trouble, wasn't it?
