Chapter 30: Jonin Teacher.
I reached home just after leaving the Hokage's office. Without wasting time, I walked straight to the laboratory. As I approached, the door opened on its own—Tsunade was inside, sitting at her desk, sipping coffee as she scribbled something in a worn notebook. There was a human body laid out on the table nearby, partially dissected. The scene might have horrified most people… but not me. I'd long since gotten used to this.
And Tsunade? She's seen far worse in the wars.
I quietly stepped inside. She didn't look up, still writing. I cleared my throat and held out the headband I received from the academy.
"I graduated," I said plainly.
Tsunade looked up at me with a calm expression, her eyes lingering for a moment on the headband in my hand. A subtle warmth crossed her face before she masked it again.
"Well, that was expected of a Senju," she said, almost too casually. "So, what are you here for, Ren? Just to distract me while I work?"
A smirk tugged at the corner of my lips. "Actually, I came to talk. The Hokage summoned me and Kakashi after the graduation exams. We were allowed to choose our own jounin instructors."
Her pen stopped mid-sentence.
"…And?" she asked, without looking at me.
"I chose you."
This time, her head snapped up. "Why would you do that? Minato would've been a better teacher. You know that."
I gave a small shrug. "I don't need someone to teach me techniques. I just need a sensei on paper. But if you insist… maybe you could teach me the Mystical Palm Technique."
Tsunade let out a sigh and leaned back in her chair. "That much I can do. You're right—it'll be useful, especially if you plan to lead missions someday. So, what now?"
"Just tell the Hokage tomorrow that you accept being my jounin sensei. That's it. Oh—and once your experiments are done, you'll start assigning me missions."
The moment I said that, I saw her brows knit tightly. I already knew what she was thinking. The idea of me leaving the village… of Danzo or others targeting me outside Konoha. Her silence spoke volumes.
"I'm not careless," I said, walking closer. "If things get dangerous, I can disappear underground in a second. No one's faster than Mayfly. And I'll only take missions within the Land of Fire or trusted allies."
She stared at me for a long moment before finally nodding. "Fine. I'll talk to Hiruzen tomorrow."
I smiled and gave her a short bow. "Thank you."
"And what will you do until I start giving you missions?"
"I'm going to start training in A- and B-rank Wood Release techniques. By the time I master them, your experiments will be done, and you'll be ready. When that happens, I'll make my Wood Release public knowledge. Until then, I keep it hidden."
Her eyes narrowed slightly. "You're planning something."
I didn't deny it. "A lot of things. But it's all for Konoha. And for you."
Tsunade looked away for a moment. "You always say these things so casually…"
"Oh, right," I said, pretending to suddenly remember, "What about Shizune? She's been handling your work at the hospital, hasn't she?"
"Yes. Why?"
"I was thinking—why don't we move her into the main Senju compound? She's practically family."
Tsunade paused mid-sip, then lowered her cup.
"What, Ren? Are you suddenly interested in Shizune?"
I blinked, then chuckled. "No. I already told you—I'll only like you in this life."
Her eyes widened briefly, and I caught the faintest blush on her cheeks before she turned away, thinking that he was just joking.
"I was already planning to bring her into the main building," she muttered. "But fine—I'll inform her tomorrow."
"Thanks, Tsunade."
She waved me off. "Go on, then. I'll come with you to meet the Hokage tomorrow afternoon. Don't bother me until dinner."
I nodded, then turned and walked out. I headed straight to the training grounds and started practicing with Wood Release, testing a few ideas I'd been saving. Eventually, the sun dipped beneath the horizon, and I returned to the house.
As always, we had dinner together in silence—absorbing natural energy afterward before heading to bed.
(Kakashi POV)
After meeting the Hokage, I returned to my training spot. I didn't expect anything—but the moment I started stretching, someone flickered behind me. I turned instantly.
It was him—Minato-sensei.
"Yo," he greeted me casually with a smile. "So you're Kakashi. I've heard a lot about you."
"…Likewise," I replied, straightening.
He looked at me with sharp eyes, then grinned. "People say you're a genius, but I think I'm still one step ahead."
I tilted my head. "There's someone more of a genius than me—Ren Senju."
Minato chuckled. "Oh, that classmate of yours? Don't worry. Only those with both talent and hard work truly shine. If he has both, he'll be strong. But if not, he'll fall behind. You… you have both, Kakashi."
I said nothing.
"Anyway," Minato said, clapping his hands, "Let's meet tomorrow at the Hokage's office in the afternoon. We'll make it official."
Then, in a flash, he vanished—using the Flying Thunder God. I knew he had seals spread all over the village.
I sighed. This was the beginning of my journey as a shinobi. For Konoha. For the Will of Fire.
