Chapter 19: Chapter 19 The Breaking Point
Kaito's voice was light. Almost playful.
"I just told you what I know. Whether it's true or not... that's for you to decide."
Then his smile vanished.
"Oh—and Danzo."
Danzo stiffened.
Kaito's words landed like a blade.
"Everything you've done… was sanctioned by Lord Third himself. The Uchiha purge? The slaughter of Itachi's kin? That was his order."
Silence.
The air turned heavy. Dense.
All eyes turned to Hiruzen.
Uchiha. Anbu. Konoha shinobi. No one looked away.
And Kaito?
He wasn't done.
Hatake Sakumo: The Unforgivable Sin
Kaito's gaze shifted.
He saw him—white hair, masked, standing just behind Hiruzen.
A smirk curled on Kaito's lips.
"Oh? Since you remember even Lord Second, surely you recall... Konoha's White Fang?"
Hiruzen froze.
Danzo flinched.
And Kakashi?
Kakashi's breath caught.
The name crashed into him like a blade to the chest. His fingers twitched. His Sharingan spun uncontrolled.
Kaito saw it. And pressed on.
"Back then, during the war against Sunagakure... he led alone. Victory after victory. Respected. Unmatched. A hero."
The crowd listened.
Even Hiruzen said nothing.
Because they knew where this was going.
"And then... the rumours began," Kaito said softly. "He abandoned the mission to save his comrades."
Kakashi staggered.
His lungs locked up.
Kaito's voice cut sharper now.
"But those were ANBU operations, weren't they?"
He turned to Hiruzen.
"And ANBU missions are classified."
The crowd stilled.
Only one person had access to S-rank ANBU deployments.
The Hokage.
Kaito's tone dropped to a whisper.
"So tell me, Lord Third... how did an entire village find out?"
Cracks in the Throne
Hiruzen opened his mouth. Then closed it.
For the first time, he looked old.
But he forced the words out.
"I admired Sakumo," he said. "He was noble. A shinobi who valued life. Konoha is one big family—"
Kaito began clapping.
Slow. Icy.
"Beautiful," he said, dripping venom. "Truly. The way you speak of family... right before you send them to die."
Then his tone changed.
"Tell me, what was White Fang's role?"
Hiruzen's face tightened.
He hesitated.
Kaito didn't.
"Minister of ANBU."
A murmur rippled through the crowd.
Kaito stepped forward.
"ANBU follows one chain of command. Directly under the Hokage. Which means…"
He let the silence hang.
"You leaked it. Or you let someone else do it."
Kakashi's vision swam.
His father's body.
The blood on the floor.
The whispers.
The shame.
The funeral was no one.
His hands shook.
For the first time in years, Hatake Kakashi felt rage.
Hiruzen's Legacy Begins to Rot
The silence was no longer respectful.
It was damning.
Anbu exchanged glances. Uncertainty crept in.
Hiruzen felt it.
They didn't trust him anymore.
Not fully.
Not blindly.
His heart pounded. His legacy—his legend—unravelling. Not in a war.
In words.
And Kaito?
He stood at the centre of it all.
Not shouting. Not attacking.
Just revealing.
Danzo's Last Move
Danzo, still bleeding, took a step forward.
"Kaito," he rasped, "I don't know how you found this, but you won't slander Lord Third—"
He staggered—but stood.
"I take full responsibility for the actions of Root."
Hiruzen turned. Shocked.
"Danzo...?"
But Danzo didn't look at him.
He looked at the crowd.
"I never accepted that Tobirama gave the title to Hiruzen," he said. "In strength, I was his equal. But I hesitated once."
"And I lost everything."
His voice turned bitter.
"So I did what had to be done."
"I eliminated rivals. Removed threats. Sent my clan to the front lines to ensure his rise."
Now he turned to Hiruzen.
And Hiruzen understood.
Danzo wasn't protecting him. He was burying him.
"You were weak. Soft. You needed me to clean up your failures."
Then Danzo looked at Kaito.
"And you don't think this is a victory. You're just a child. Children don't change the world. They inherit its rot."
He straightened his back, blood soaking his robes.
His last act wasn't to defend the Hokage.
It was to drag him down with him.
The battlefield didn't move.
No one stepped forward for the Third.
Not one shinobi raised a word in his defence.
And just like that... Hiruzen's era began to die.
