Chapter 111: NT: 110: The Shocked Hokage
In a sandy stretch near Sunagakure.
Tengen rose slowly from the ground, his chakra restored. Time to return to Konoha.
"Minato, we should head back." Tengen said.
"Alright, I'm counting on you. Be careful." Namikaze Minato replied.
Such a long-range Flying Thunder God Technique drained chakra heavily. A misstep could be fatal.
It wasn't unheard of, some forbidden ninjutsu, like the Shadow Clone Technique, could kill from chakra exhaustion.
In the Naruto world, chakra tied to the body.
A blend of physical cells and mental energy, it was intrinsic to every ninja.
Hence, tailed beast hosts died if their beasts were extracted, their powers nearly fused with their bodies.
Special physiques, like the Uzumaki or Senju Hashirama's, were exceptions.
Their traits brought remarkable benefits.
"Don't worry, Minato. I know my limits." Tengen said, placing a hand on Minato's shoulder.
In an instant, they vanished.
In Konoha, inside Tengen's room, Minato and Tengen reappeared.
"We're here." Tengen said, his face slightly pale. The long-distance Flying Thunder God Technique took a toll, far exceeding the trip to Kakuzu in the Land of Rivers.
"You okay, Tengen?" Minato scanned the familiar Konoha-style architecture. "This is…"
"Konoha, my home." Tengen smiled.
"We made it." Minato said, still in disbelief.
"Yes, Minato. Open the door and see." Tengen chuckled.
Minato opened it, revealing a bustling scene, familiar streets from his childhood.
They were back.
"Thanks, Tengen. Should I report to the Hokage?" Minato hesitated, eyeing Tengen's state.
Tengen didn't look well.
"No worries, Minato. I'll go with you to see the Hokage." Tengen smiled.
How they'd heard news in Sunagakure and returned, Tengen's presence would make the report convincing.
"Alright, let's go." Minato nodded, and they headed to the Hokage Building.
Time to warn the Third Hokage: Konoha needed to prepare.
In the Hokage's office.
"Hokage-sama, Jonin Minato and Chunin Tengen seek an audience." an Anbu ninja reported to Sarutobi Hiruzen.
"Minato, Tengen?" Sarutobi Hiruzen paused.
Impossible. Sunagakure was far; even rushing, they couldn't return this fast.
Spies, perhaps?
Unlikely.
What idiot spy would disguise as Minato and Tengen to face the Third Hokage?
Doubts swirled in Sarutobi Hiruzen's mind.
Had they skipped Sunagakure, interrupted by something?
Questions muddled the Third Hokage's thoughts.
Looking at the Anbu, Sarutobi Hiruzen said, "Bring them in."
"Yes, Hokage-sama." the Anbu Jonin replied.
To learn the truth, asking Minato and Tengen directly beat guessing.
Moments later.
Minato and Tengen entered the Hokage's office, the Anbu ninja leaving.
"Minato, Tengen, how are you back so soon? Did something happen?" Sarutobi Hiruzen studied them.
No doubt, they were genuine.
Their chakra signatures and subtle power confirmed it.
"I'm sure you have questions, Hokage-sama. I'll start with our investigation in Sunagakure." Minato said.
"Of course, I'm all ears." Sarutobi Hiruzen held his pipe, voice steady.
"Minato, go ahead." Tengen prompted.
"Alright." Minato nodded, recounting their journey from Konoha to Sunagakure.
The trip held no shocks until they sneaked into Sunagakure, overhearing the Kazekage's plans.
"What? You say Sunagakure's ninjas…" Sarutobi Hiruzen jolted, incredulous.
"Yes, Hokage-sama, we heard it clear as day. Their advance force is heading for Konoha, location unknown." Minato confirmed.
"How could this be? Is the Fourth Kazekage sparking a Ninja World War?" Sarutobi Hiruzen's gaze darkened.
"If so, Konoha must act." he said gravely. He trusted Minato and Tengen wouldn't lie, especially on this.
"Then how did you return? By your account, you'd still be in Sunagakure." Sarutobi Hiruzen eyed them keenly.
Such a long-range jump involved advanced space-time ninjutsu.
"Flying Thunder God Technique." Minato said.
"Flying Thunder God Technique?" Sarutobi Hiruzen stared at Minato, stunned. "Minato, has yours reached that level?"
"No, Hokage-sama. It wasn't me. Tengen brought us back." Minato said slowly.
"Indeed." Tengen smiled faintly beside him.
"This… this…" Sarutobi Hiruzen pointed at Tengen, face etched with shock.
In that moment, the Hokage's dignity vanished.
He looked like a startled old man.
