Chapter 30: Chapter 30
The true nature of the Sharingan?
That question itself sounded strange. The Sharingan is the Sharingan—what "nature" is there to discuss? It was like stopping a random person on the street and asking, "Do you know the true nature of humanity?"
You'd probably get nothing but eye-rolls or insults in return.
Of course, judging people by status is something most can't help.
But when Rēn was the one asking such a question, no one present thought he was insane. Instead, they were convinced there was deeper meaning in it. Each of them fell into deep thought, trying to uncover the mystery behind Rēn's strength.
"Is it spiritual energy?"
That reputation of being a genius wasn't for nothing.
Shisui was the first to grasp what Rēn meant.
"That's right. Spiritual energy. Though I prefer to call it Yin Release."
As they traveled, Rēn didn't mind sharing some of his personal insights. Whether anyone could draw inspiration from it depended on their own talent.
"Fire, Wind, Earth, Lightning, Water, and then Yin and Yang—these seven chakra natures basically cover everything ninja are capable of."
"Ninjutsu, genjutsu, taijutsu, secret techniques, kekkei genkai, and even Kekkei Tōta… all of these are derived from those seven. That includes our clan's Sharingan—it's a manifestation of Yin chakra. Fundamentally, it's the same type of power as the Yamanaka Clan's mental techniques and the Nara Clan's shadow techniques. All of them are Yin Release."
"You're saying that training in spiritual energy—Yin Release—can make our dōjutsu stronger?"
Shisui asked, uncertain.
"It's not that simple, but yes, you're on the right track. I once read a line in an old clan record: 'The pinnacle of the Sharingan is the pinnacle of Yin Release.'
The reverse is true as well. The stronger your Yin Release, the stronger your Sharingan becomes."
Rēn wasn't making that up.
It was written in a centuries-old notebook left behind by a former clan head. Not part of any formal document, just a collection of that man's casual training notes. It hadn't even been classified as a secret text and was kept in the general clan library, open to all.
Rēn suspected that particular clan head was, like Uchiha Madara, a reincarnation of Indra.
"Yin Release… but what exactly do you do? Just study genjutsu?"
"It can't be that easy. Don't we all use genjutsu? Every Uchiha who awakens their Sharingan can use it."
Fugaku's confidants started debating.
Shisui thought about it, then shook his head.
Rēn's words made sense, but they were far too vague. It was like someone telling you that making explosive tags only required chakra-infused paper, without explaining how to draw the seals or infuse the chakra properly.
In short, he'd told them what to pursue, but not how to get there.
"Don't assume I'm holding back. What I've accomplished wasn't because of some hidden trick—it was thanks to Samehada."
As if responding to being named, the blade strapped to Rēn's back twitched lightly.
"Samehada?"
Everyone, including Shisui, looked confused.
At this point, Rēn stopped talking. He had no intention of explaining further.
If he ever developed a method worth sharing, he wouldn't mind telling his allies. But in this case, his understanding of Yin and Yang Release was something only made possible thanks to Samehada. It wasn't something he could easily teach.
Back then, ambushing and killing Fuguki Suikazan had definitely been one of the best decisions of his life.
Without Samehada, who knows—he might've gone down the wrong path like colluding with Orochimaru for cell transplantation, or sneaking into the Hidden Cloud Village to steal Sage tools.
But with Samehada, he'd touched the core of Yin and Yang Release.
No need for crooked paths—there was a legitimate road straight to the top.
Indra, that long-lost ancestor of the Uchiha clan, was the best example.
He inherited the Six Paths Sage's overwhelming Yin chakra—spiritual energy—and awakened the three-tomoe Sharingan at birth. Later, when he awakened the Mangekyō Sharingan, he never suffered blindness. He went directly to the Eternal eye—or perhaps the true Mangekyō Sharingan.
In Rēn's view, today's so-called Mangekyō was just a degraded form. A half-finished version born of the clan's declining Yin chakra over generations. The eye-transplant method was, in essence, a forced merging of Yin energy. With two sets of Yin chakra, a complete Mangekyō could be formed.
At the end of the day— The Sharingan's true power came from Yin chakra, the force of imagination, the ability to give shape to nothingness.
And Susanoo was the ultimate proof of that power—form from nothing, born of will alone.
"Don't underestimate Samehada. It's the only living weapon in the entire shinobi world."
Seeing everyone looking at it with doubt, Rēn couldn't help but defend his beloved tool.
"Don't forget—even our clan's treasured fan is just a lifeless object. But Samehada is a masterpiece that embodies both Yin and Yang Release."
"Yin and Yang Release?"
Fugaku frowned slightly.
But as always, it was hard to read anything from the former clan head's face.
"Isn't that a little exaggerated?"
Even Shisui was intrigued by how much Rēn was praising the weapon.
"Giving a lifeless weapon a mind—thoughts, memory—isn't that great? Just because it exists now doesn't mean we should forget how unbelievable it is for a weapon to be alive.
Rēn's words made Shisui fall silent.
Creating life?
That's not difficult. Humans, animals, they reproduce, giving rise to new generations. The world is full of life.
But creating life from something that never had it to begin with? Giving a weapon consciousness? Was that truly something people could achieve?
"Samehada… just where did it come from?"
Shisui murmured.
Rēn didn't answer.
Samehada's origin was rather simple to figure out for him.
In the thousand-year history of the shinobi world, there was only one person capable of creating something so unique and inimitable.
The Sage of Six Paths, Ōtsutsuki Hagoromo.
Even in death, he still seemed to be watching over the world.
That wasn't just Rēn's speculation. He had dug through Samehada's millennia-long memories and found the truth.
Because Samehada could think, it could also remember.
Its intelligence was about the level of a regular human child—not especially mature even after all this time—but its memory was exceptional. It remembered the aura and voice it had sensed at the moment of its birth.
A man called the Sage of Six Paths.
That man created Samehada's form from nothing using Yin Release. Then, using Yang Release, he gave it life.
That's why Rēn said Samehada embodied the essence of both Yin and Yang Release.
And it just so happened that the Noble Phantasm ability "The Knight Does Not Die Empty-Handed" gave Rēn overwhelming mastery over any weapon.
It allowed him to fully command Samehada—its power, its will, its memories.
And that was the true foundation of Rēn's overwhelming strength today.
