Chapter 317: Chapter 317: A Sure-Fire Strike Before Negotiations

Despite being an elder stateswoman, Chiyo couldn't help but feel a sense of schadenfreude when she heard the news about Utatane Koharu.

It wasn't every day you heard of a high-ranking Konoha elder being slapped so hard that they ended up in the hospital, with broken bones and missing teeth no less.

Even more outrageous?

Konoha wasn't even trying to keep it a secret.

Too many people had witnessed the incident firsthand, and instead of expending energy to suppress the story, the village leadership chose to let it spread. Shinki hadn't lifted a finger to block the news, and even Homura seemed content to let Koharu stew in her humiliation.

The result?

The tale of Koharu's airborne slap overshadowed even the battle between Tsunade and Kushina, becoming the talk of the village.

For ordinary villagers, Jinchūriki and tailed beasts were distant, almost mythical entities. But village elders? They were figures of authority—untouchable and revered.

To hear of one of them being literally slapped out of the room was both shocking and oddly satisfying.

In Sunagakure, Chiyo chuckled to herself as she heard the reports.

"Koharu won't be at tomorrow's negotiation? What a delightful development," she mused.

Of all Konoha's senior figures, Utatane Koharu was the one she dreaded dealing with most.

Shinki and Tsunade were intimidating in their own ways, but Koharu? Her abrasive temper and tendency to needle her opponents made negotiations an exhausting ordeal.

"Looks like I owe Hyuga Shinki a thank-you gift," Chiyo said, unable to hide her glee.

Meanwhile, in the Hokage's Office

A high-level meeting was underway.

The Third Hokage leaned forward, speaking gravely.

"The Sand Village envoys have arrived. Negotiations will begin tomorrow morning."

Shinki raised an eyebrow. "Am I expected to attend?"

"..."

For a moment, the room fell silent.

Homura cleared his throat awkwardly. "As a high-ranking official and a key figure in the war with the Sand Village, yes, you'll be attending. Either you or Tsunade must represent Konoha in the discussions."

Shinki rolled his eyes. "Don't even bring up Tsunade. You know she'd rather work as a supervisor or clean debris than sit through negotiations."

Homura sighed. He'd expected that response, but it was still worth a try.

Turning to the next Hokage, Homura gave a subtle signal.

"When discussing negotiations, always mention Tsunade and Kushina alongside Shinki. It helps emphasize Konoha's strength," he whispered.

The next Hokage nodded and quickly changed the subject.

"Is the security and surveillance work ready?"

Homura took over the explanation.

"Security is being handled by the Hokage Guard. For surveillance, I've assigned Hatake Sakumo. If the Sand Village tries anything, Sakumo's presence alone will unsettle them—especially Chiyo."

Homura's tone was almost gleeful. Sending Sakumo, the man who had killed Chiyo's son and daughter-in-law, was a deliberate psychological move.

The Third Hokage gave Homura a thumbs-up.

"You've done well, Homura. This tactic will keep the Sand Village off-balance during negotiations."

Shinki smirked faintly. A bit mean, but effective.

Late Night

The meeting dragged on until the early hours of the morning. By the time Shinki left, he was stifling yawns.

His home was still under construction, so he was temporarily staying at the Senju ancestral house. Though old, it was still livable after some cleaning.

As he walked through the quiet streets, he suddenly paused and looked toward a rooftop.

"Senior," he called, his voice calm but firm, "you've been following me for a while now. Why don't you come down?"

There was a faint rustling before Hatake Sakumo dropped down from the rooftop, looking slightly sheepish.

His white hair gleamed under the moonlight, and his half-sleeved Hokage shirt added to his sharp, wolf-like demeanor.

Shinki grinned.

"Senior, following me so late at night? Is there something on your mind?"

Sakumo scratched the back of his head, a small smile tugging at his lips.

"Perhaps. I just thought we should talk before the negotiations tomorrow."

Shinki gestured for him to continue.

"You've been the talk of the village lately," Sakumo began. "Your actions… unconventional as they may be… have certainly shaken things up."

Shinki chuckled. "And here I thought you'd be lecturing me about slapping Koharu."

Sakumo shook his head. "Not at all. Honestly? I wish I could've done it myself."

The two men shared a quiet laugh before Sakumo's expression grew serious.

"Chiyo will be at the negotiations tomorrow. If I'm there, it might complicate things."

Shinki raised an eyebrow. "Afraid of her?"

"Not afraid," Sakumo replied, his voice steady. "But my presence might agitate her enough to derail the talks. If that happens, I trust you to bring things back on track."

Shinki nodded.

"You leave the negotiations to me, and I'll leave the intimidation to you. Deal?"

"Deal."

The two clasped hands briefly before continuing their chat.
