Chapter 22: No Signs of a Struggle

In the last chapter, I forgot to write about using the travel card and started directly from the other world, which might make it seem like something is missing.

----------------

"Creewhhh!"

A grotesque rat-like creature, two metres long with a single, bulging eye, launched itself toward Shisui.

"Stupid bastard," he muttered, mildly annoyed.

He hadn't planned on killing it immediately. He wanted to play a little, observe its patterns, gauge its reflexes. So, he created a few shadow clones to surround it, curious to see what it would do.

But the damn thing didn't even try to escape or stall. It recognised death for what it was and still chose to leap straight at him.

Maybe it wasn't stupidity. Maybe it was instinct. Facing overwhelming power, the creature seemed to understand it was going to die no matter what. So it went for the one radiating the strongest aura: Shisui. In the wild, the leader is always the one you take down first.

Too bad for the rat.

With a flick of his left hand, Shisui weaved a single hand seal.

"Fire Style: Fireball Jutsu."

A sphere of fire erupted forward, colliding with the rat mid-air. It didn't even have time to scream properly. Its body ignited, twisted, then dropped to the ground as little more than charred bone fragments.

Shisui clicked his tongue.

"Only genin level."

Sure, a genin couldn't have taken it down this easily. Not most, anyway. It would've been a cat-and-mouse chase for either side to win. But the monster wasn't even mid-tier. In the hierarchy of beasts, this was a minion-level creature, the absolute lowest class. And even within its rank, it was still in the first phase, the weakest of four progressive stages.

Yet, despite that, its reflexes weren't bad.

Faster than most genin, especially the pampered ones raised during peacetime.

Of course, not all genin are the same either. The title might be shared, but there's a clear difference between the bird who just left the nest and the one who brings food back to it.

From Shisui's perspective, the best way to deal with them is through numbers. At the end of the day, most beasts are faster, and their surroundings often work in their favour.

"Let's leave," he muttered, glancing around at the destruction the rat caused. The building under construction would clearly need more time now.

"…Sigh. Sorry," he mumbled, vanishing from the scene before the authorities could arrive.

And sure enough, moments after he left, a group of magicians surrounded the building.

One of them, a middle-aged man with green hair and claw marks on his face, stepped forward.

"What happened here?"

"Sir, the locals reported hearing monster noises," one of his juniors replied.

"Hmm. Did you find anything?" the man asked as he walked further inside.

"By the time we arrived, there were only ashes and bones left. But we were able to identify it. It was a beast. Specifically, a one-eyed rat."

The senior's expression darkened.

"Their numbers seem to be increasing. Wasn't there another case just last week?"

"Yes," the junior nodded. "A girl was dragged into the sewers. The Hunter Association has already been notified. The bounty on them has been increased for the time being because of this."

The green-haired man nodded, then crouched down, examining the scorched floor. The officers hadn't removed any evidence yet.

"…Fire element," he muttered, scanning the damage.

"That's our conclusion too," another officer said, nodding in agreement.

"A high-level mage," the senior murmured, causing everyone nearby to gasp.

Most of them were only intermediate-level mages, except for the senior himself. Sure, in anime it might seem like every college student was already at the intermediate level, but reality was far less kind. The students shown were the top of the top, the cream of the crop, those who had the privilege of training in peace with ample resources and guided mentorship.

But that wasn't the case for the majority.

Most couldn't even awaken their second element by the time they graduated from college. Resources were scarce. Advancement required luck, connections, or both. For many, real improvement only became possible after securing a stable job, when they finally had access to better equipment, training grounds, and government-licensed relics.

The green-haired man stood up slowly, a deep frown forming on his face.

"Whoever did this," he said quietly, "was no amateur."

"Are you sure, sir?" one of the officers asked, voicing the doubt many others silently shared.

The senior mage's eyes scanned the faces around him. Then he spoke loudly and clearly, as if addressing a class.

"You must be wondering why a high-level mage would waste time on a low-level creature like a One-Eyed Rat."

Several officers nodded. That exact question had been bothering them. A mage of such calibre lowering themselves to deal with a creature barely above pest level? It didn't make sense.

The green-haired man chuckled, then snorted in amusement.

"Look around. What do you see?"

Everyone immediately glanced about, their eyes sweeping the area.

After a few seconds, one man raised his hand.

"Sir, there are no signs of battle. No elemental damage, no scorch marks from lightning, no frost trails, no shattered earth…"

"Exactly," the senior said with a small smirk. "There are no signs of defence or resistance. No elemental residue except fire."

That caught everyone's attention.

"That tells us two things," he continued, his tone now firm and analytical. "First, the mage likely used wind to suppress or evade the rat's movements. Then, fire—precisely, efficiently, in one go. Burned it clean through without collateral damage."

He paused before adding,

"There's a possibility it was a coordinated team attack. But personally, I doubt it. The control and power displayed here suggest a single caster."

"So… he used at least two elements?" someone asked.

"Most likely. Fire as the major, wind as the secondary. The third is unclear, but it could vary depending on his training. It could possibly even be shadow, if he's specialised."

"Why do you think fire is his main element?" another officer asked.

The green-haired man snorted again.

"You saw the rat. Burned instantly. Not charred. Incinerated. None of you can do that—and I'm guessing none of you know someone who can either, right?"

The officers looked at each other, then slowly shook their heads.

"Exactly. This wasn't beginner-level fire magic. This was advanced—controlled, explosive, and precise. It takes years to reach that point."

There was a moment of silence before another voice broke through.

"…But why would someone like that waste time killing a One-Eyed Rat?"

That question made the senior pause.

Even he couldn't answer it.

A few seconds later, he gave an order.

"Find out who owns this building and what's been going on here. Maybe there's something special about it."

Then, turning to the man beside him, he asked,

"Did you get the video?"

The man nodded and passed him a tablet. On the screen was an image of a person wearing a black cloak with red clouds and a fox mask. What stood out was how he deliberately looked straight at the camera before leaving.

It was clearly Shisui, wearing an ANBU mask and Akatsuki-style outfit. He had decided that simply vanishing would make things more complicated. Leaving behind a deliberate trail would help build a reputation—something that could be useful in the future.

"Did you find any records?" the senior asked.

"No. At least not in our database."
