Chapter 11: CHAPTER 11 - Rumors Begin to Spread
In the mornings, Hyuga Mirai went to Konoha Hospital to study medical ninjutsu and handle simple injuries. Afternoons were spent back at the Ninja Academy attending taijutsu and ninjutsu classes. After school, he escorted Kiyo Hyuga home before heading to his secret training spot to refine his Gentle Fist techniques. Evenings were dedicated to dinner followed by reviewing what he had learned during the day. This routine continued without interruption, day after day.
Although assisting with minor surgeries and treating injuries at Konoha Hospital consumed a significant amount of Mirai's study time, it allowed him to lend a helping hand to Dr. Nakano, who was teaching him medical ninjutsu. Whenever Mirai encountered tasks within his capabilities, he eagerly took them on. While such behavior was both exhausting and time-consuming, it earned him Dr. Nakano's goodwill and a solid reputation—benefits that far outweighed the drawbacks for someone like Mirai, whose current value lay primarily in his physical labor.
Occasionally, Kiyo Hyuga would make unreasonable demands that could potentially waste his time. However, after nearly two years of interaction, Mirai had come to understand her temperament and boundaries. He had mastered the art of dealing with her; she was like a spring in his hands, easily tightened or gently released. Using clever phrasing, he skillfully deflected her unreasonable requests, convincing her that his perspective was both logical and sound.
In just three days, Mirai learned the Healing Jutsu, and within five, he was using it effectively on patients at Konoha Hospital, significantly speeding up their recovery. His reputation began to spread, no longer confined to the hospital and the academy.
"Ah, that boy, Hyuga's prodigy! I heard his talent in medical ninjutsu rivals that of Lady Tsunade from the Sannin!"
"Come on, Lady Tsunade is the medical saint! But yeah, that Hyuga boy is impressive. He shaved two days off my recovery time using the Healing Jutsu, and my medical bills were even reduced!"
"I've seen him too! A friend of mine at the hospital said his talent in medical ninjutsu is unquestionably genius-level!"
Such comments began circulating throughout Konoha. Mirai's kind demeanor, diligent work ethic, and eagerness to learn earned him widespread praise. Whenever he saw patients in pain, he would generously use his chakra to hasten their recovery, embodying the Will of Fire.
The character Mirai projected left little room for criticism. Each time a student interned at Konoha Hospital, their supervising physician would provide an evaluation. Dr. Nakano's reviews of Mirai were brimming with praise, going as far as to describe him as a beacon of hope for Konoha and a perfect inheritor of the Will of Fire.
Healing Jutsu, a C-rank technique, was considered moderately difficult. Yet Mirai mastered it in a short span of time. A month and a half later, he advanced to learning the A-rank medical ninjutsu, Mystical Palm Jutsu, under Dr. Nakano's tutelage. As an advanced form of Healing Jutsu, it posed a significantly higher challenge. Initially, even Mirai struggled and had to dedicate substantial time and effort before gaining proficiency. Once he did, he poured himself into mastering the technique, eventually gaining full control over it.
By concentrating Yang Release chakra, this jutsu revitalized cells around a wound, enabling injuries to heal in a remarkably short period. When Nakano first taught the Mystical Palm Jutsu, he estimated it would take Mirai at least a month to grasp its basics. To his astonishment, Mirai managed to perform the technique proficiently in just ten days. The first time Nakano witnessed Mirai use it, his jaw nearly hit the floor.
Though Nakano knew Mirai was talented, he never imagined his aptitude for medical ninjutsu would be this extraordinary. Over the following months, Nakano taught Mirai two additional medical jutsu, both of which he mastered in short order. By this point, Nakano was utterly convinced—Hyuga Mirai would one day become a medical ninja rivaling even the legendary Tsunade. Nakano would stake his life on it.
Other than chakra reserves and surgical experience, Mirai had already reached a level in medical ninjutsu that matched Nakano's own. Though Nakano was only a medical chunin, he was nonetheless a vital asset to Konoha Hospital. High-ranking medical ninja, such as jonin-level practitioners, often served as department heads. Even among the ranks of chunin, Nakano was a treasured resource. Considering Mirai's prodigious talent, his future as a medical ninja was boundless.
"Mirai-kun, that's enough for today. Thank you for your hard work!" Dr. Nakano patted Mirai on the shoulder after he completed a minor surgery.
Within a single morning, Mirai had treated three patients—minor wounds from missions, but his assistance had lightened Nakano's workload significantly. After all, missions ranked C or B often involved skirmishes, and even the best Konoha ninja couldn't avoid occasional injuries.
"In that case, I'll take my leave now, Dr. Nakano," Mirai replied politely, bowing slightly before stepping out of the hospital.
After finishing his tasks, Hyuga Mirai noticed there wasn't much left for him to do and prepared to take his leave. Turning to Dr. Nakano, he said his goodbyes. He also decided to skip the afternoon ninjutsu class. The Ninja Academy had a rather lenient approach to student management, especially for exceptional students.
From what Mirai had gathered from Kiyo Hyuga about the recent buzz at the academy, Kakashi's promotion to Chunin had sparked a wave of graduation applications. Among those considering graduation was Kiyo herself. Being Kakashi's peer, she felt a sharp sting of comparison—while he had already ascended to Chunin, she and others were still stuck in the academy. This glaring disparity was hard for the prodigies of Class A to stomach, Kiyo included. Raised as a genius of the Hyuga Clan's main family, Kiyo had a strong, proud personality shaped by her upbringing, and the murmurs of criticism were impossible for her to ignore.
Mirai, however, chose not to concern himself with such matters. His focus was on steadily building his strength before the Third Shinobi World War erupted. Staying in the village as a medical ninja seemed to be his safest option. While it might mean sacrificing combat experience, Mirai believed it was the best choice for him.
After leaving Konoha Hospital, Mirai decided to stop by the market to purchase some rice and meat. Thanks to his skills with the Mystical Palm Technique, he had started earning money at the hospital. Given his proficiency, they no longer treated him like a mere trainee.
"Just these items, please," Mirai told the shopkeeper. "Kindly have them delivered to my home." He had bought quite a bit, but since the shop offered delivery services, he left his address after settling the payment and began to leave.
Just as he turned away, he overheard the shopkeeper and another customer in conversation.
"Hey, did you hear about the White Fang of Konoha?"
"Oh, that guy? What a disgrace! Because of his selfishness, the Land of Fire suffered massive losses. Absolutely unforgivable!"
The shopkeeper scoffed, adding, "Yeah, I used to look up to him, but to abandon a mission just to save one person? That's ridiculous."
"Excuse me," Mirai interrupted, turning back and approaching the two. His pale eyes, gleaming with the intensity of the Byakugan, seemed to exert an invisible pressure on them. "What were you just talking about?"
The shopkeeper hesitated under Mirai's gaze before blurting out, "It—it's about the White Fang of Konoha. They say he abandoned a mission to save a comrade, which ended up causing great losses for the Land of Fire…"
The shopkeeper's companion chimed in, "Yeah, exactly! The country suffered because of him. Some hero he turned out to be—what a joke!"
Mirai took a step closer, his tone steady but piercing. "Losses? What kind of losses? Were they financial, casualties, or perhaps critical information? And this mission—only a handful of people in Konoha would have the clearance to know its details. So, may I ask, where exactly did you hear this?"
The two men faltered under his unrelenting scrutiny, visibly uncomfortable.
"W-well, I mean, everyone's been saying it, so it must be true, right?" the shopkeeper stammered.
Mirai shook his head, his expression calm but firm. "So, you're spreading rumors without knowing the specifics—without any concrete information about the so-called losses or their impact?" He paused before adding, "Please make sure my order is delivered." With that, he turned and walked away, deciding he had no further interest in engaging with them.
As Mirai disappeared into the distance, the shopkeeper and his companion exchanged bewildered looks.
"Who…who was that guy?"
"No idea. But hey, about those losses—what exactly were they?"
"Beats me. I was just repeating what I heard from someone else…"
