Chapter 40: 40
Though Itachi said nothing, Fugaku could see the unwavering determination in his son's eyes. That was all the answer he needed. With his most trusted men and his own son in agreement, Fugaku had no reason to refuse. In truth, a part of him was eager to see how much his own strength would increase after gaining the power of Wood Release. Perhaps he could even attain the strength of a Kage. If he were to encounter pursuers from Konoha in the future, he would be better equipped to protect his people.
"It seems you have all made up your minds. Then follow me…" White Zetsu said with a sly grin, leading the small group toward a secret chamber.
At that moment, a spatial vortex swirled into existence, and Obito's figure emerged from the other dimension. White Zetsu raised a hand in greeting. "Yo. Right on time."
Obito glanced at White Zetsu and the Uchiha warriors behind him, said nothing, and walked straight toward Madara's position.
"Tsk tsk. I find you've grown more and more impolite as you get older," White Zetsu said with a playful smile, watching Obito's retreating back.
Itachi stared at the masked man and whispered to his father, "Father, that is the one who came to me before."
Fugaku nodded, then turned to White Zetsu and asked, "White Zetsu, is that young man also Lord Madara's son? That ability to appear from thin air… it was not a space-time ninjutsu, but the power of a Mangekyō Sharingan." Fugaku had watched carefully, seeing the vortex of space center on the masked man's right eye.
White Zetsu laughed. "Hahaha, don't be ridiculous! Madara has only one son, Shiro. That man is merely a collaborator."
"By the way, you should know him as well. He is also from Konoha."
"Oh?" Fugaku was stunned. "Who is he?"
White Zetsu replied, "That one is called Uchiha Obito."
"What?!" The four men were shocked into silence. This was a name they knew all too well. Was he not the orphan who had died heroically in the Battle of Kannabi Bridge years ago?
"But isn't he dead?"
"Yes! I remember before he died, he gifted one of his Sharingan—the one in Kakashi's left eye!" Inahiro and Yakumi exchanged looks of disbelief. As members of the same clan, they knew Obito's reputation. Among his peers, he had been dead last. The man who had just passed them exuded an aura of immense power, a pressure that had made them shudder. Who could believe that a failure of a student could become so powerful in just a few years, even awakening the Mangekyō Sharingan? And the most crucial point—the man had a pair of genuine Sharingan. Even if Obito had somehow survived, he should have been one-eyed.
White Zetsu saw the confusion on their faces and smiled. "Do not be so surprised. It is a long story. There is a reason he has become what he is now. He was able to survive thanks to a transplant of Hashirama's cells. And Shiro's ability also played a significant role…"
Along the way, the talkative White Zetsu told them everything, as if he were simply recounting an old tale. Fugaku and the others listened as if in a trance, their faces a mask of pure astonishment. It was all so outrageous. Madara's son, Shiro, possessed the ability to rejuvenate and heal others. They finally understood why Madara grew younger as he aged, and how Obito's lost eye had been restored. It was all thanks to the power radiating from Shiro.
How sorrowful! We are all Uchiha, yet why do my own two sons not possess such a miraculous power? Fugaku sighed internally. Is it a problem with our lineage? That can't be! I am the head of the clan, second only to Madara himself in seniority. Our genes should be impeccable. Is it because of their mother…?
As Uchiha Fugaku was lost in his confusing thoughts, they finally arrived at the secret chamber. White Zetsu pushed open the door. "Tsk tsk… Everyone, please, come in. From today, you will be reborn."
In the Land of Fire, deep within Konoha Village, in the underground base of the Root organization, Danzō sat on a high throne. Below him, a group of Root ninja knelt, their faces hidden behind porcelain masks.
"It has been half a year since the Uchiha clan vanished," Danzō began. "There has been no news, and Minato has failed to provide any explanation. I believe the time has come."
Danzō narrowed his eyes slightly, his voice calm and cold. "At the next regular council meeting, I plan to force Minato to abdicate. You will hide near the Hokage Building in case of any unforeseen circumstances, to prevent him from making any desperate moves."
"Yes, sir!" the Root ninjas shouted in unison.
A single Root ninja stood and walked forward, his voice tinged with excitement. "Lord Danzō, I have something to report."
"Speak."
"The day before yesterday, I followed your instructions to hunt down the remnants of the Fuma clan to acquire their research on chakra. Unfortunately, they escaped."
Hearing this, Danzō's eye narrowed further. "A failed mission. You know the consequences."
The Root ninja seemed completely indifferent to his own life. "I understand, sir. If not for an unexpected discovery, I would not have returned. I would have led my team to suicide this morning."
"What did you find?"
The Root ninja raised his head. "I led my team in pursuit all the way to a remote mountain peninsula. Suddenly, we heard a deafening explosion in the distance. In that moment, the Fuma clan ninja vanished. We assumed it was a trap set by other Fuma members, so we investigated the source of the explosion. There, we discovered traces of what we suspect to be the Uchiha clan!"
At this, Danzō's eye snapped open. "Are you certain?"
"Absolutely! I saw several familiar Uchiha faces, as well as a large group of men, women, and children. But…"
"But what?" Danzō asked hurriedly.
The Root ninja swallowed, mustering his courage. "They… were farming."
"Farming?"
"Yes. Every single one of them was farming. Even the elite ninja of the Uchiha."
"…" Danzō was silent for a long moment, but a fierce, triumphant excitement was building in his heart. Haha, the pitiful Uchiha clan. I never imagined they would end up in such a miserable state. I thought they would flee to another country. It seems Konoha's strength is still respected. The other nations did not dare to take them in.
After a moment of grim satisfaction, Danzō looked up. "Did you engage them?"
The Root ninja shook his head. "No. I did not want to alert the enemy. More importantly, the entire area is surrounded by some unknown barrier. We could not enter with our current abilities."
Danzō nodded. "Good. It was right not to alert them. A few of you alone could not have hoped to stand against the full might of the Uchiha." He narrowed his eye, a plan forming in his cunning mind.
"Recall all Root operatives," he commanded. "Tonight, we march in secret to the mountain peninsula. I will accompany you."
"Our target: the lives of every member of the Uchiha clan. Not a single one shall be spared!"
"Tonight, I will erase the name 'Uchiha' from this world completely!"
"Remember, this information cannot be known to anyone, especially not the village leadership!"
