Chapter 51: A Leisurely Life
(notice at the end of chapter!!)
After muttering a few more curses, Hyuga Tennin rubbed his temples in frustration and waved for the meeting to adjourn.
Once everyone left, he returned to the rear hall. Back in his room, he sighed deeply, his face full of exhaustion as he sat on a luxurious fur carpet, holding his forehead in silent contemplation.
"Father, please have some tea and don't overwork yourself."
A girl in white, no more than eight years old, approached with a cup of freshly brewed tea. She placed it in front of him gently.
"It's you, Tamamo," Hyuga Tennin said, lifting his head to see his daughter. He sighed and downed the tea in one gulp.
"I'm sorry, Father. It's all because of my rash actions last time that led to this situation," Hyuga Tamamo said softly, biting her lip with a hint of remorse.
Hyuga Tennin shook his head and let out a long breath. "It's not your fault. Ever since we launched a surprise attack on the Uchiha clan, the enmity was inevitable. Whether or not you went after Uchiha Gen, they would have made a move sooner or later. I'm just angry at the Senju clan."
"Father, do you mean to say that... the Senju clan is doing this intentionally?"
Standing up, Hyuga Tennin snorted coldly. "Hmph, with their strength, if they truly wanted to rescue us, would a mere Uchiha Dou be enough to stop them?"
"But haven't we already agreed to become their subordinate clan? What's the point of their actions? It only allows the Uchiha to grow bolder."
Hyuga Tennin shook his head slowly. "Tamamo, you're talented and intelligent, with unique insight into ninjutsu. But some things require experience to understand. A 'subordinate clan,' huh? We Hyuga have our own Kekkei Genkai, our own traditions, our own territory, and are one of the most powerful clans in the Warring States. If today we call them our masters and become their subordinate clan, what happens if tomorrow we refuse? What would they be then?"
Tamamo pondered, "But doesn't that risk letting the Uchiha grow unchecked?"
Hyuga Tennin let out a mocking laugh. "That's why they sent reinforcements, didn't they? Senju Rokan is supposedly fishing while staring down Uchiha Dou at Windy River. It's a form of deterrence. If the Senju clan wants, they could raise the stakes anytime and rescue us instantly. Besides, they know our strength. For the Uchiha to destroy us outright, they'd have to mobilize their entire clan, which isn't easy."
"Tamamo, as the heir to the Hyuga main family, you must understand this clearly. In the Warring States, might makes right. The Senju act with impunity because they have strength. The Uchiha behave arrogantly for the same reason. An enemy today might not be one forever. In this world, as long as the benefit is great enough, even a grudge over a slain father can turn into an alliance. Similarly, brothers can turn on each other for profit.
"Our current situation arises because, as a single wolf, we got involved in a fight between two tigers. Greed led us to overreach. But it doesn't matter; we have enough rations to last half a year. The Uchiha are fighting on two fronts. Who knows what the outcome will be?"
With that, Hyuga Tennin stood, opened the door, and strode out with firm and decisive steps, burying his grievances and concerns deep within.
Watching her father's retreating figure, Tamamo felt a sense of admiration for his resilience under the sunlight.
"Someone, pass down my orders. Clan affairs will be overseen by Elder Hyuga Shinzou. I'm heading to the front lines personally."
---
The war, reignited by the Uchiha clan only months after the three-clan conflict, raged fiercely. The Uchiha spared no expense, even recalling their shadow-level powerhouses from both the northern and southern fronts.
Uchiha Tajima remained at the clan headquarters, monitoring battle updates and preparing to provide support at any moment. He also had to watch the north and south, especially one front where the Fuma, Aburame, and Chiba clans loomed. If something went wrong, Uchiha Hou might not be able to handle it.
Despite this tension, none of it seemed to affect Uchiha Gen, who was leading a leisurely life for several reasons—chief among them being his recent move.
Having been adopted by Uchiha Tajima, Gen initially lived in a small house within the clan estate. While the space was adequate, he always felt stifled, especially after Uchiha Tajima began doubting him. Feeling increasingly out of place, he used the reward from slaying the Blood Ninja to purchase a new residence.
The house had belonged to an elderly Uchiha who had passed away peacefully—an incredible feat during the Warring States period, where luck was as important as skill. Believing the house to have excellent feng shui, Gen insisted on buying it.
The property cost 50,000 gold coins—a steep price—but Gen felt it was worth it.
Now, he was seated in a quaint two-story pavilion called Wind and Rain Pavilion, enjoying the tranquility.
The late-March weather was perfect, with cherry blossoms blooming throughout the courtyard. The petals danced in the wind, creating a stunning scene.
Before Gen was a fine purple sandalwood table laden with fruits, snacks, and a small bottle of sake. Across from him sat a boy about eight or nine years old, visibly frustrated. This was Uchiha Madara.
Since Gen had moved into his new home, Madara had visited multiple times. Each visit made his own small room feel increasingly unsatisfactory. Unfortunately, he lacked the funds to buy a similar residence. After tasting the dishes prepared by Gen's maid, he started visiting even more frequently. As usual, he brought up the same topic today.
"When are you going to join me on the battlefield?" Madara grumbled, downing a cup of sake.
Gen lazily tossed a pine nut into his mouth, now immune to this question. Over the past week, he had heard it countless times.
"Fighting and killing are so uncivilized. Look at the falling cherry blossoms—this is the perfect season for flower viewing. Why bother with war? It ruins the mood. Besides, why drag me along every time? If you're so eager, just go."
Madara clenched his fists in frustration and grumpily ate his food in silence.
Gen chuckled softly, gazing at the falling cherry blossoms. "This... this is what I call living."
