Upon returning to the clan, Xuan instructed Chiya Ying to return to her room while he headed to the meeting hall.
The roof of the meeting hall, which had been completely destroyed two months ago by Xuan and the others, had already been repaired. Xuan glanced at it briefly before stepping directly inside.
Inside the hall, everyone was already present. Besides Xuan's uncle, Uchiha Tajima, there were about fifty other people, all of whom were at least jonin-level in strength. Among them was Uchiha Madara, who nodded slightly in Xuan's direction as he walked over to Tajima.
"Clan Leader, I'm here!" Xuan announced. In this formal meeting setting, even Madara had to address Tajima by his title rather than using a familial term.
"Mm, find a place to sit," Uchiha Tajima responded with a casual nod.
Xuan scanned the room and decisively sat cross-legged next to Madara. He was not accustomed to the traditional kneeling posture of the clan and doubted he ever would be.
At the front, Uchiha Tajima began to speak in a calm yet commanding tone. "When I was on the battlefield last time, I suddenly received word that the clan had been attacked. I was so alarmed that I abandoned the battlefield and rushed back with all the clan's available shinobi. Even so, we still lost forty of our most talented young shinobi from the next generation—a humiliation to the Uchiha Clan that is unprecedented in its severity!"
Bang!
Tajima slammed his fist onto the table, causing it to shake violently. His sharp gaze swept across the room, and the gathered crowd all lowered their heads, avoiding eye contact. Satisfied that his authority remained unchallenged, he nodded slightly before continuing.
Clearing his throat, he went on, "This matter cannot go without someone being held accountable. Third Elder Uchiha Feng, manipulated and fooled by the enemy, abandoned the clan grounds recklessly—a foolish mistake. Stripping him of his elder position is insufficient as punishment. Let's discuss how to deal with Uchiha Feng."
Uchiha Feng, who had been kneeling at the front, stood up with a pale face and sweat beading on his forehead. He dared not say a word. When he first heard about the clan being attacked, his mind had gone blank. Upon returning, he had voluntarily resigned as Third Elder. Over the past two months, clan meetings had gone by peacefully, and he had thought the matter was behind him—only to find himself called out again.
"What's going on?" Xuan asked Madara in a low voice. "I heard that several clan meetings have already been held in the past two months. Haven't they passed judgment on the Third Elder yet?"
Madara shook his head slightly. "I'm not sure. But it seems they haven't reached a verdict. Most of the discussions have been about retracting territories and fortifying the borders against the Senju Clan. The retreat from the battlefield left many loose ends to tie up."
Xuan nodded in understanding. Ensuring the safety of the clan took precedence over punishing their own members.
The jonin in the room began whispering among themselves, discussing various punishments for Uchiha Feng. Their suggestions ranged from lenient to severe.
After some time, Tajima raised a hand to silence them. "Does anyone have any concrete proposals?"
One of the jonin sitting near the front, just behind Uchiha Feng, stood up to speak. He appeared to be about forty years old—considered "elderly" in the high-mortality Warring States period—and was one of the clan's most powerful elite jonin, known as Uchiha Zhan.
"Third Elder Feng's negligence has brought an unprecedented crisis to our clan's next generation. If not for the extraordinary talents of Madara and Xuan, the consequences would have been unimaginable. Stripping him of his elder position is too light a punishment. I propose sending Uchiha Feng to oversee the Fujiwara mine. It would ensure the mine's security, especially since reports indicate several bandit groups are active in the area."
"Why are you laughing?" Madara asked Xuan, noticing the slight smirk on his face.
Xuan glanced at Madara with a hint of derision but did not reply. Hmph, no matter how gifted you are, you're still an eight-year-old child. How could you grasp the implications of Uchiha Zhan's proposal?
The Fujiwara mine, one of the Uchiha Clan's three major mining operations, produced iron essential for crafting weapons. Its resources were vital to the clan's economy, with iron being exported to feudal lords and generals. This provided a significant source of income.
Normally, punishing Uchiha Feng would involve assigning him dangerous missions to atone for his mistakes or sending him to the battlefield. However, there was a risk he might achieve merit and regain his position, given his long-standing influence.
Sending him to the Fujiwara mine was different. While the punishment appeared mild, it was effectively an exile. Guarding the mine was a thankless task—success would merely be expected, while failure would be deemed inexcusable. Being stationed far from the clan's core meant he would likely never return to power, rendering him irrelevant.
Uchiha Zhan's motives were transparent. As one of the strongest elite jonin, he had his sights set on the vacant elder position. Eliminating Feng cleared the path for his ambitions.
Xuan shook his head slightly. Political power struggles existed everywhere, even under external threats. For now, these disputes were relatively benign. No one sought to kill their rivals outright, as every jonin's strength was a vital asset.
But Zhan's plan was doomed. The clan had recently suffered a defeat and needed every capable shinobi. Exiling an elite jonin like Feng to guard a mine was impractical. No clan in the ninja world could afford such extravagance.
As Zhan presented his proposal, the hall erupted in debate. Several jonin loyal to Feng immediately spoke out, listing his past contributions and arguing against his exile. The arguments quickly devolved into a heated quarrel.
Tajima frowned and let out a cold snort. The room fell silent, and all eyes turned to him, awaiting his judgment.
"Forget the Fujiwara mine," Tajima said. "There's been a surge of rogue ninja activity near the western Rain Country. Reports mention two elite jonin among them. We've received a request for assistance from the Daimyo of Tenmyoryu, with a commission of one million ryo. Uchiha Feng, you will handle this mission alone. Depart immediately."
Feng cast one last glance at Tajima, sighed, and silently turned to leave.
