Chapter 13: Chapter 13: They Are After You
Countless fissures cracked the walls open, the ground bellowed ferociously, and the entirety of this lightless realm screeched, as if in pain.
What the f-
The ground continued trembling, becoming more ruthless in every quake.
The fissures on the wall continued opening up, and from those very cracks, agonizing cries and roars escaped, reverberating in the previously noiseless like a cacophony of omen and death.
"You got to be kidding me right?"
Altair could only utter, clearly perplexed and in shambles by the sudden turn of events.
He slowly backed off from the walls, keeping the faint light in front of him to observe the rapidly growing fissures on the wall, vigilant about the bone-chilling sounds that emanated from deep within, and wondering about what kind of creatures that were imprisoned from within it are capable of producing such a terrifying and discordant resonance.
The cries, groans and roars that are escaping grew stronger, until it became deafening. Altair can feel every sounds and vibration shaking his existence, reverberating in his bones, travelling in his organs, making him twitch and the hairs on his skin stand. His instincts told him to run, his instincts told him to not witness the unseen horrors that are dwelling deep inside the walls, his instincts told him to run while the beasts haven't been yet unleashed in this lightless realm, and yet Altair was stubborn, he remained, and the myriad of chaotic cacophony grew louder until he can no longer stand it.
Altair stayed still, covering his ears, but even so, the echoes and vibrations of the sound being emanated from the walls strike his being with no mercy, growing more and more merciless. He instinctively had his eyes closed, and as he struggled to open them up, his eyes widened in horror.
Multiple hands, claws, and enigmatic limbs protruded from the numerous fissures, desperately freeing themselves from the obsidian walls, each of them firmly gripping the edges of each fissure widening each cracks for them to be able to get through.
Altair shuddered at the thought of these monstrosities being unleashed upon this already terrifying world.
A head finally managed to set itself loose from the narrow cracks that formed in the wall. Its shape and form vague, resembling that of a moose whose fur is ripped off of its skin, its exposed rotting flesh pulsating from each breath that the creature takes, covered in what seems like a black mold that's digging to the surface of the beast's decaying bones, exposing another grotesque layer of the beast's being. A large portion of its lower jaw was decimated, chunks of flesh and cavity remained, barely hanging from its mouth, its tongue intact, strangely elongated, its teeth that remained are eerily like that of a human's.
What lays on its eye sockets are pure emptiness, pitch black that seems to even consume the darkness itself in it, its gaze oppressing and piercing, ominous and eerie that looking directly into it will drive you mad. It seems to be staring into something, fixated into one direction as it struggles to fully free itself from the narrow gaps of the obsidian walls. As the creature slowly unfolded itself, the jagged edges of the fissure flayed layers of its skin, causing mortal bleedings that are scattered on its body, putrid black blood seeping out of each wounds.
As the monster revealed its body, Altair could only see its vague silhouette, but one thing that is certain is that its figure is something akin to an eldritch horror, a monstrosity from the deepest layers of hell. Its body gaunt, its multiple arms long, slender and peculiar akin to that of fragile pillars, its ribs protruding chaotically and unequally from its torso like a set of broken maws, jagged, sharp and decaying. From within its array of protruding ribs lie a strange shaped heart that pulsated in a strange rhythm, in each beat growing multiple times its size punctured by the very same set of ribs that it lies soundly beneath.
The movement of the monster was so slow, but it only appear so because the beast was gigantic, in reality, it was moving eerily fast for a creature of such size.
Altair was worried, naturally, he can merely see its silhouette but he was certain that the beast has its gaze affixed on him as it struggles to free itself fully.
Not a moment later however, multiple limbs and heads started to escape from the fissures of the wall, in a similar fashion as the first abomination that exposed itself.
Altair didn't take long to realize.
These monsters are after him.
They were all out to hunt for him.
Well, now it makes sense why that being's experimentation all ended up in failure.
Before the beasts could fully free themselves however, the ground once more trembled. And then as the room shifted, the light in his torch died down, and the whole realm shook, shifting and changing. Even when there's no existence of light, Altair can still feel the beasts gazing at him solely, with unfathomably hostile intent for one last time before being separated because of the rapid shift of the realm.
The shifting then soon halted. But the ground remained trembling, this time however, it is much more intense, like something was going to come off the ground.
What the hell?
As Altair was talking to himself in his head, multiple ebony walls rapidly shot from beneath the surface, strong gusts of wind blew on Altair's entirety, and he fell on his feet as he was left to observe what's happening without the aid of his torch. Each wall had formed sufficient distance from one wall to another, enough for even gigantic monsters to be able to move freely in, and then the formation stopped as rapidly as they came, and the rumbling ceased.
The lightless torch then once again flickered with a faint light, and Altair carefully observed the surroundings, assessing the turn of events that just unfolded right beneath his eyes.
Then, there was a silent rumbling in the distance, this time not coming from the ground itself, no, this time, it's like it was caused by the footsteps of giants.
I think I have an idea now
Altair bitterly thought.
The whole place have turned into a maze of death.
