Chapter 30: This is the first time in my life that I have felt fear
Before I could pull out the short sword from my side, the enemy's iron fist shot toward my face, stopping just a centimeter away from striking me.
Why "just a centimeter away"? Because the iron fist halted exactly one centimeter from my face, effortlessly blocked by my pinky finger.
I nullified the kinetic energy behind the opponent's punch.
"Power anomaly detected. Power anomaly detected. Entering emergency state—"
"No need to switch to any emergency state. I'll just shut you down completely now."
Before the mech could make its next move, I stepped on its metallic arm and pushed off with force, launching myself upward. Mid-leap, I grabbed the electric probe on its head with one hand, using my trained arm strength to hoist myself onto the mech's top.
Once I steadied myself, I swiftly pulled out the black short sword and drove it down hard into the mech's head.
Confirming that the blade had indeed embedded itself in the mech's head, I flipped backward to the ground and turned around with a sense of anticipation.
"Critical state—uh! Ah! Ahhhh! Aaaaaahhhh~! Aaaaahhhhhhh~!"
I knew it.
Just like Tanoshi Kozo, one stab was enough to send the opponent into a frenzy, roaring and howling as if possessed.
"…Is screaming and self-destructing all you're capable of?"
I sighed in disappointment and started to walk away—
But just as I stepped forward, strange sounds began emanating from the mech behind me. My heart tightened, and I turned back, only to have a strange energy spray onto my face.
I reached out to touch it—this black-and-white mixed energy had a texture resembling a solid liquid, something utterly uncharacteristic of a mech.
Looking back at the mech, I saw it frantically switching its movements and forms, rapidly cycling through various states in a disorienting manner.
However, these frantic maneuvers failed to stabilize the already out-of-control mech. After a series of bizarre operations, the mech exploded violently and disintegrated entirely.
The searing heatwave brushed against my body, though such an explosion had no effect on me.
"This is…"
What remained was a massive crater filled with charred earth, centered around the mech's wreckage.
"Not bad."
It seemed this short sword had a forced insta-kill effect, and to my surprise, it worked even on inorganic lifeforms.
With the external threat eliminated, it was time to explore the building's interior.
"Ah..."
I approached the large door cracked from the blast and reached out to push it open, only to realize the door wasn't solid. My arm passed straight through what should have been a tangible surface, vanishing into the space beyond.
I froze for a moment, as this unexpected phenomenon was beyond my anticipation.
But ultimately, it was a minor detail. If the door wasn't solid, I'd just walk through it.
As I stepped inside, the scene instantly shifted to a dilapidated and decayed ancient hall.
"This place could collapse at any moment," I concluded after surveying my surroundings.
The large chandelier hanging from the ceiling swayed precariously. The walls were riddled with cracks of various sizes, and even the staircase leading to the second floor had broken apart at the middle.
Seeing this, I hesitated about whether it was worth searching the place.
It wasn't that there was no need to search—it was that I instinctively didn't want to stay here any longer than necessary.
I couldn't shake the overwhelming sense of danger lurking within these walls.
"Over there!"
Reacting faster than I ever had in my life, I drew the black short sword I had just sheathed and hurled it at the large chandelier.
The blade struck the already fragile connection point with precision, causing the chandelier to crash to the ground with a thunderous noise, kicking up a cloud of dust.
From within the dust, a figure resembling a young girl emerged.
"Such a crude method… couldn't you be a little gentler?"
I instinctively swallowed hard, feeling a bead of cold sweat slide down my cheek.
My intuition screamed warnings to my entire being—
—This enemy was extraordinarily dangerous.
