Chapter 62: Chapter 58.2: Another Fight Begins
When Fernando and Branka rushed into the dueling hall, the first thing they saw was the two figures locked in a struggle on the raised platform.
Hades' face was bulging with veins, lying on his back, his left arm tightly wrapped around Ugo's neck, his right hand locking his left arm in place, ensuring Ugo couldn't break free.
The Guillotine Choke!
Ugo's face was turning red, the once-proud psyker of the Legion now struggling pathetically, desperately trying to escape. However, against Hades, who was clearly much larger and stronger, Ugo stood no chance.
Pinned to the ground, Ugo's last attempts to break free were futile. Hades had expertly applied the choke, cutting off blood flow to Ugo's brain. Even though Ugo was a genetically enhanced Space Marine, the lack of blood flow would soon render him unconscious.
Gradually, Ugo's struggles weakened.
The hall fell into silence.
Seeing Ugo had passed out, Hades finally released his grip, standing up, his arms slightly numb from Ugo's frantic resistance.
The match was over.
Perhaps the intensity of the battle had stunned the spectators into silence. For a moment, the duel hall was dead still.
Fernando glanced at the Primarch, but Mortarion, deep in thought, showed no signs of leaving.
With a silent exchange of glances, Fernando and Branka understood what had to be done.
While most of the company commanders and the Chief Librarian were in a meeting, a few veterans had informed Fernando about the situation.
Upon hearing that Ugo was dueling Hades and that the Primarch was watching, the veterans knew that even though Garro couldn't intervene directly, Branka and Fernando had to handle it.
If Ugo had won, Fernando was prepared to step in and stop the psyker's potential spiral into madness, even if it would anger the Primarch.
Fernando had already lived through one disastrous event; he couldn't face another.
Seeing Fernando's grim expression, Garro had maintained his composure. He wasn't convinced Ugo would win.
If Hades wins, and the Primarch still wants to observe, Branka will need to stall and prevent anyone else from challenging.
That was the plan.
Today, the transport ship from Mars had just arrived, and First Company Captain Barasine and the Master of the Forge were busy receiving the Mechanicus Tech-Priests. With the Titan Legio personnel present, even the Primarch had to stay back to study certain matters, preventing him from intervening directly.
Though Barasine was informed that the Primarch had gone to the dueling hall, he couldn't just abandon his duties to rush over and give an excuse to take Mortarion away.
Barasine couldn't have anticipated such a situation unfolding in his absence.
At that moment, with Mortarion showing no intention of leaving and with veterans fearing more challenges, Branka made a quick leap onto the platform, drawing everyone's attention.
This gave Fernando the opportunity to lift Ugo's unconscious body and swiftly carry him away.
Contrary to what Fernando expected, Mortarion didn't intervene or voice any objections.
Fernando sighed in relief.
Right now, Mortarion's mind was preoccupied, pondering why Hades hadn't simply nullified Ugo's psychic powers as he had done back on Barbarus, opting instead for a more physically challenging method.
The Primarch wasn't interested in watching any more duels.
His presence was initially prompted by Calas, and Mortarion, intrigued, had gone along with it. But now he realized Calas might have had ulterior motives.
He'd need to investigate the connection between Calas and that psyker.
If Calas had been colluding with Ugo behind his back…
Mortarion felt a twinge of displeasure.
While Branka stood on the platform, Mortarion remained silent.
Hades' recent behavior, and Calas' possible secret dealings with Ugo… were they hiding something from him?
Deception? Betrayal? Or was it his own paranoia?
Mortarion's mind was tangled with uncertainty, like a nail caught in a frayed cloth.
Unaware of Mortarion's inner turmoil, Branka diligently carried out the task Garro had assigned him.
"Hades, fight me next!"
Hades stared at Branka in disbelief as Fernando, without missing a beat, hauled Ugo off the stage.
He knew he had gone a bit overboard with the previous fight, but what was this now? Why was his superior suddenly challenging him?
Hades looked at the stern-faced Branka across the platform.
While he was aware that Branka wasn't fond of him, Hades didn't believe that was enough reason for him to leap into the ring at this moment.
Was Branka doing this to defend the honor of the Terran veterans?
However, Hades was completely in the dark.
As he had a good relationship with Mortarion, he was not aware of Mortarion's image and status in the hearts of other Space Marines.
To others, the Primarch was untouchable, a figure of intimidation that no one dared to casually approach, let alone engage in casual conversation about legion matters.
This is also the reason why, in the original story where Hades did not exist, Typhon could deceive Mortarion again and again.
Because except for Typhon, other Death Guards would not actively chat with the Primarch and discuss private matters of the Legion.
And Mortarion would not easily take the initiative to chat with his subordinates.
Even though he attached great importance to his army, Mortarion believed that he needed to maintain his dignity in the army - even his mysterious or terrifying identity.
Seeing too little, imagining too much. That was Mortarion.
Meanwhile, on the platform, both combatants were lost in thought.
Branka was confident he could drag out a stalemate with Hades, stalling for time.
The veteran Terran soldiers, seeing Branka's intention to prevent an all-out victory, were relieved.
Contrary to his usual fiery demeanor, Branka was actually a moderate like Garro. He wasn't going to act rashly.
Ugo had already crossed a line. His psychic outbursts were clearly beyond what was acceptable by Librarian standards, and under normal circumstances, he would face internal discipline for his actions.
Especially under the Primarch who despised psykers.
Most veterans were no longer thinking about proving themselves; they were now focused on damage control.
Meanwhile, the newer recruits from Barbarus, unfamiliar with the deeper currents of the situation, continued cheering, oblivious to the tension.
Only Vorx, standing quietly on the sidelines, had an inkling of what was unfolding.
All they had seen was their Barbaran hero, Hades, defeat a powerful opponent, and now even his superior was stepping up to fight him!
"Go Hades!"
On the platform, Hades took a deep breath, staring at Branka.
I knew I'd have to fight you.
But why aren't you holding a weapon?
