Chapter 77: Study Date (77)

The soft hum of the afternoon air was filled with the chirping of birds and the occasional rustle of leaves swaying in the breeze. Haruto stood outside Aiko's house, nervously clutching his schoolbag. He glanced at the sky, a pale blue canvas dotted with fluffy clouds, and exhaled deeply.

Aiko had invited him over for a study session, and while it wasn't the first time they'd studied together, something about today felt different. Maybe it was the fact that they were preparing for the upcoming midterms, or perhaps it was the warmth in her voice when she had asked, "Come over tomorrow? It'll be more fun than cramming alone."

The door creaked open, snapping him out of his thoughts. Aiko stood there in a casual outfit—a pastel yellow sweater and denim shorts, her hair tied up in a loose ponytail. She smiled brightly. "You're here! Come on in."

Haruto nodded, stepping inside. The familiar warmth of her home greeted him, along with the faint scent of lavender. Aiko led him to the living room, where a low table was already set up with textbooks, notebooks, and an assortment of colorful pens and sticky notes.

"I made snacks," she said, gesturing to a plate of cookies and two glasses of iced tea. "We'll need brain fuel."

"Thanks," Haruto said, taking a seat across from her. He opened his textbook, trying to focus on the formulas and diagrams, but his eyes kept drifting to Aiko. She was leaning over her notebook, her brows furrowed in concentration, occasionally twirling her pen as she wrote.

"Haruto," she said suddenly, breaking his reverie.

"Yeah?"

"You're staring."

His face flushed. "I—I wasn't!" he stammered, looking down at his book.

Aiko giggled. "Sure you weren't."

The teasing tone in her voice made him relax, and he chuckled. "Alright, alright. Let's focus on studying."

For the next hour, they worked through math problems, quizzed each other on history dates, and debated the finer points of grammar. Aiko was quick to grasp concepts, but Haruto noticed she struggled with geometry.

"Here," he said, scooting closer. He picked up her pencil and started sketching out a diagram. "If you think of the triangle like this, it might make more sense."

Aiko leaned in, her shoulder brushing against his. "Ohhh, I see now," she said, her face lighting up with understanding. "You're good at this, Haruto."

"It's just practice," he replied, though her praise made his heart skip a beat.

As they continued, the atmosphere grew more relaxed. Aiko started doodling little flowers in the margins of her notes, and Haruto found himself laughing at her exaggerated impressions of their strict math teacher.

"Okay, break time," Aiko declared, setting her pen down. She reached for the plate of cookies and held one out to Haruto. "Here, try this."

He took a bite and nodded approvingly. "Did you make these?"

"Yup!" she said, beaming. "I used my mom's recipe. Do you like them?"

"They're great," he said, reaching for another.

They sat back, enjoying the snacks and the comfortable silence. Haruto glanced around the room, his eyes landing on a small shelf filled with framed photographs. One caught his attention—a picture of Aiko as a child, holding up a drawing with a proud smile.

"You've always loved art, huh?" he said, nodding toward the photo.

Aiko followed his gaze and smiled softly. "Yeah. It's always been my way of expressing things I can't say out loud."

Haruto thought about how her drawings often captured emotions so vividly—joy, sadness, hope. "You're really talented," he said sincerely.

"Thanks," she said, a faint blush creeping up her cheeks. "What about you? What's something you love doing?"

He paused, caught off guard by the question. "I guess... I like helping people," he said after a moment. "Whether it's small things like explaining a math problem or something bigger. It just feels good, you know?"

Aiko nodded. "That's so like you, Haruto. You're always looking out for others."

Her words made him smile, but they also stirred something deeper—an unspoken warmth he didn't know how to express.

As the afternoon stretched into evening, they returned to their studies, though the pace was slower now. The golden light of the setting sun streamed through the windows, casting a warm glow over the room.

"Okay, one last question," Aiko said, holding up her notebook. "What's the capital of Portugal?"

"Lisbon," Haruto answered without hesitation.

"Correct!" she said, clapping her hands. "I think we're ready for the midterms."

"Thanks to you," he said. "This was way more productive than studying alone."

"And more fun," Aiko added with a grin.

As Haruto packed up his things, Aiko walked him to the door. The cool evening air greeted them as she opened it.

"Thanks for coming over," she said, her voice soft. "It means a lot."

"Anytime," Haruto replied, meeting her gaze.

For a moment, they stood there, the unspoken bond between them stronger than ever. Then Aiko smiled and waved. "Good luck on the test, Haruto."

"You too," he said, stepping outside.

As he walked home, the memory of her laughter, her smile, and the warmth of their time together lingered in his mind. It wasn't just a study date—it was a reminder of how much she meant to him, and how their connection went far beyond words.
