Chapter 28 - Transcendent Pathways
Morning arrived, and Hestia sat in her room after getting up.
The “Huacai Roleila H4-Blue” personal terminal gifted by Qiao Long unfolded on the desk. Her slender fingers danced across the projected keyboard as spots of light flickered, and Hestia swiftly searched for information on the star network.
“Analysis of Advancement Paths for the Decay Sequence”
“On the Selection of Major Sequence Paths”
“Comparison of Progression Numbers for Federal Major’s Sequences Over the Past 20 Years”
…
A variety of topic threads flashed through Hestia’s eyes.
The transcendent sequences were methods of using Aijeka particles to achieve supernatural effects. If the raw Aijeka particles were likened to crude oil, then the transcendent sequences would be akin to refining that raw material into various types of magic for use.
Just as crude oil produces fuel, lubricants, solvents, and even chemical fibers like polyester or spandex—commonly found in textiles like stockings—Aijeka particles, when processed through different transcendent sequences, yield unique properties tailored to specific fields.
The Federation currently recognizes nine mainstream transcendent sequences:
1. Nature Sequence
2. Blood Eye Sequence
3. Spirit Particle Sequence
4. Dragon Sequence
5. Light Feather Sequence
6. Decay Sequence
7. Tide Sequence
8. Blade Sequence
9. Primordial Sequence
Each sequence has distinct magical properties. For instance:
The Dragon Sequence excels in powering large machinery and warships.
The Spirit Particle Sequence is widely used in AI control.
The Tide Sequence is prevalent in energy systems.
The Blood Eye Sequence serves as a core in weaponry.
The Light Feather Sequence specializes in defense and isolation.
Despite their unique strengths, the application of any sequence ultimately depends on the individual. The true distinction among sequences lies in the beliefs they represent.
For example, the Decay Sequence embodies themes of death, stillness, coldness, annihilation, and the soul. It evolved from ancient necromantic practices that thrived during the Second Epoch’s Mercury Dynasty. However, as societal norms shifted, its macabre elements—such as corpse manipulation—were gradually replaced with a focus on the spiritual and mental realms. Today, the Decay Sequence is highly regarded in medical fields, with nearly half of doctors being associated with it.
This duality of life and death was one reason why Hestia decided to apply to Erin Academy during her sophomore year of middle school. Specializing in medical sciences, the academy held a solid reputation in Northern 7th District. While not elite, it offered good job prospects after graduation.
By 11 a.m., Hestia closed her terminal and lay back on the bed, deep in thought.
Advancement within transcendent sequences grows complex at higher levels. While Sequence 1 is relatively straightforward, advancements from Sequence 2 onward result in divergent abilities depending on one’s path.
Transcendent pathways are ranked by their level of refinement. For instance, a Perfect Condensation-grade Sequence 5 pathway could easily overpower ten Excellent Condensation-grade ones. Naturally, this creates a pursuit of higher-level pathways, but these often demand exceptional talent or exorbitant resources.
Some corporations even patent unique advancement models, requiring individuals to pay hefty fees to access their resources and guidance. For ordinary people, however, publicly available advancement models provided by the Federation or academic institutions suffice.
For Hestia, her advancement to Decay Sequence 2: Shadowed Visitation (Excellent Red Iron Grade) was achieved using the Federation’s free public model. Schools and universities often extend similar opportunities to their students as a form of public welfare.
In this context, high school choices are crucial in the Federation, as they often determine a person’s future. With the majority of jobs requiring only a high school education, university remains a luxury few can afford, given the astronomical tuition fees.
…
After a light nap, Hestia had lunch and prepared to head out.
Standing before her wardrobe, she pondered her choice of attire. Her collection was modest, with several items being school uniforms. The newest addition—a maid outfit from her part-time job—was elegant but unsuitable for casual wear.
Settling on a black and blue dress with subtle ruffles and a fitted silhouette, Hestia changed into the outfit. This particular dress was a birthday gift from her father over a year ago, and although she cherished it, his subsequent disappearance left bittersweet memories attached to it.
Looking at her reflection, she tied her hair into a simple ponytail with a dark blue ribbon, letting two strands fall loosely at the front for a touch of youthfulness.
Dressed and ready, Hestia took a deep breath and stepped out the door.
