Chapter 25: Kirishima
The world was a kaleidoscope of throbbing pain and cotton-filled silence. My head felt like a bowling ball someone had used to practice their fastball, and my stomach was doing some sort of acrobatic routine I definitely didn't approve of. Groaning, I pried my eyes open, the dim light of one of Mina's bedroom's a torturous assault.
Okay, hangover. Classic. Last night's party had been...well, it had been Mina's party, which meant it was loud, chaotic, and involved a concerning amount of punch. I tried to push myself up, only to feel something shift behind me. It was...weird.
I reached back, my fingers brushing against something warm and furry. This wasn't right. I scrambled to my feet, the room wobbling alarmingly. I caught my reflection in Mina's ridiculously sparkly wall mirror and nearly choked.
Two pointed, cherry-red ears stood proudly atop my head, and a matching red tail swished behind me. Not human red. Fox red. I gaped, my hand flying to my newly acquired ears. They were soft, velvety, and undeniably…foxy. I even tried giving them a little tug, and they just stayed there. Stuck. Part of me.
This wasn't some weird cosplay mishap. Last night, I'd just been Kirishima Eijiro, regular guy, with regular ears and no tail. Now, I looked like some reject from a bizarre anime convention. My mind raced, trying to grasp what was happening.
I had to get out of here. The others were still passed out, thankfully, probably suffering the same headache-induced misery I was. I slipped out, carefully closing the door behind me. I needed to think, and the only place I could do that was home.
The walk felt like an eternity. Every step was an exercise in avoiding anything that might draw attention to my new…appendages. The tail was the hardest part, constantly swishing against my legs. I finally made it home, slamming the door behind me and slumping against it, letting out a shaky breath.
"Okay, Kirishima. Okay." I muttered to myself, pacing the small space. How do you even begin to process becoming part fox overnight? Was this some kind of quirk gone haywire? Was I hallucinating? I pinched myself. Nope, the tail was still there.
After a few minutes of hyperventilating, I decided the best thing to do was talk to someone. Someone who wouldn't laugh. Or assume I'd finally cracked. Someone reliable. My fingers hovered over my phone, finally settling on Bakugo's contact.
He picked up on the second ring, a low growl in his voice. "What? You better have a damn good reason for calling this early."
"Bakugo, listen, something…weird happened last night." I said, trying to keep my voice level.
"Weird? What, did you finally grow a brain?" He said sarcastically.
"No! It's…it's about…ears and a tail." I blurted out, then cringed. That sounded insane.
A beat of silence. Then, "Are you serious?" His voice lost some of its edge.
"Yeah! I woke up with fox ears and a fox tail!" I explained, feeling a little relieved to get it out.
There was a low rumble on the other end of the line. "You're not going to believe this, but… I woke up with wolf ears and a tail."
My jaw dropped. "Wait, what? Wolf? Seriously?"
He grunted assent, and I could practically hear him pinching the bridge of his nose. "And you know what's even more screwed up? I ran into Deku. He's got bunny ears and a tiny freaking cotton ball tail."
I stared at the ceiling, my tail thumping against the floor in bewildered rhythm. "This is…this is not what I expected today. Of all the things I thought could happen, turning into a furry wasn't on the list."
"Don't call it that!" Bakugo snapped, his tone sharper. "But yeah, this is… this is a mess."
"Okay, okay," I said, trying to get a grip. "So, what do we do? Are we just… going to be foxes and wolves and bunnies now? Is there a cure? Is this some kind of weird quirk manifestation?"
"I don't know!" Bakugo growled. "But we need to figure it out. And fast."
I swallowed, the knot of anxiety growing tighter in my stomach. "Yea, definitely ."
As I hung up, I looked at my reflection again. The fox ears seemed to twitch, as if they had a mind of their own. This was definitely not going to be a normal day. And for the first time since I woke up, I felt a tiny flicker of something other than panic. Curiosity. A sort of weird, apprehensive excitement. What was going to happen next?
