Memorable Soul

Chapter 8: Ape Mind Shifter

Memor sprinted through the forest, from where he was at, he could barely see what his struggling teammates were tackling—Luni was surrounded by two Acid Chimps and Demi wrestled with another on the ground.

The bloodied grass painted his shoes red like the redness of the fruits above. Memor would occasionally check behind him in case of ambushes, but none came. His pace slowed down inexplicably, he was not tired nor badly hurt enough to interfere with his pace.

The fruit chased after Memor more vigorously, it was but a few meters away from Memor now. When close enough, The Acid Chimp propelled itself off the tree at Memor. The leaves rustled behind Memor, that was his cue. Turning around and sidestepping at the same time, Memor lifted his jian to where the Acid Chimp's abdomen would be and slashed.

The Acid Chimps face twisted in fear, it attempted to grasp a low hanging branch, but it was too far and the sword was too close. In the next moment, the Acid Chimp lay in two pieces on the grass, its mouth opened wide, petrified.

Having dealt with his pursuer, Memor continued his reunion with his teammates again. Demi was done with killing the Acid Chimp she was wrestling with and Luni was getting overwhelmed by the two he faced.

Luni was tired and stressed, the two Acid Chimps he faced moved with a synergy he had never seen before, if he had to make a guess, it would be that they were brothers. After another clash they disengaged, Luni puffed heavily , his chest beating so strongly his ear felt like they were pulsing. He looked at the two Acid Chimps he was fighting, they giggled and jumped around, mocking him.

The Acid Chimps laughed and laughed, their drools sizzling on the grass, one of the Acid Chimps stared at Luni, its arms flailing around the same with its head which let out monkeylike giggles. It turned its head to look at its brother, but what it saw was a stump of a neck, blood drooled from it, before it even realised what happened, the world turned upside down, and direction became a myth.

Next to the decapitated apes stood Memor and Demi, both their bodies painted in red. Luni let out a sigh of relief. He took a few seconds to catch his breath then went back into formation with the other two.

Deep in the forest, away from the noise of battle, Elena and her trio ventured further than all the rest of the parties, each walking alone, only a few meters from their partner. Soon they reached an opening, at its center a large Aplaire tree towered over the area in shade, sat at its base, an enormous Acid Chimp relished a red fruit in his hand, every bite it took echoed the sounds of succulent juices twirling in its mouth.

Elena with her two party members, Jacob and Costa approached carefully, she removed the scabbard on her Arming sword, while Jacob reached for his war hammer strapped to his belt, Costa held out a hand where a black rift torn the space, it seems to be a tear in space which bled in dark fog, then a War bow reformed from its black misty blood.

The Acid Chimp finished its meal and stood up, dwarfing the group of Grade 1 Mnemonists by a whole meter. Its face twisted into an awful smile, not just terrible to look at, but it was that of a psycho.

Elena and Jacob stood side by side as they advanced, gradually moving apart to surround the Acid Chimp. Once the Acid Chimp was between them, Elena charged, her sword thrusting towards the Acid Chimps chest. The ape rippled, then appeared behind her, Jacob on the other side rippled as well, appearing right next to the Acid Chimp. He swung his war hammer at the ape's head, but it was grabbed mid swing sending a shockwave.

The Acid Chimp shifted its attention to Jacob instantly, it hurled Jacob away with the hammer into the woods, making him smash through multiple trees before falling down.

The Acid Chimp turned back to Elena who was already slashing at it, but in that moment, the senses of its Phantom Self caught a movement of destruction heading its way—Costa had shot an arrow from his Artifact at the chimp's body.

A rippling arrowhead ate everything in its way, realizing he couldn't dodge the arrow nor teleport away in time, the Acid Chimp hovered a hand over its body which began to ripple, the arrow of destruction was intercepted by the ape's palm, in the next moment a huge hole appeared in the Acid Chimp's hand, but before the arrow went all the way through it was teleported away, reforming a few meters close by piercing a couple trunks until it implanted itself into the ground.

Although the Acid Chimp was able to deflect the arrow he had bigger problems to deal with, during its attempt at deflecting the arrow Elena had already turned around and was coming down with a slash. The Acid Chimp didn't have enough time to teleport this time either, it had blundered, but how was it going to fall without putting up a fight. Swinging its arm, the Acid Chimp aimed for her sides, while angling itself to take on her attack on only one its flank.

Bam!

The attack struck Elena's liver, the Acid Chimp was ecstatic, it got to defeat its enemy before its death, but in the next moment its expression dropped, the place where he hit Elena left no injury even the armor she wore was not indented. Before the Acid Chimp even realized, its collar bone had been lopped in half so was his body, a severed arm dropped to the ground, painting this clean part of the forest with its own crimson.

Agony filled the mind of the Acid Chimp, too much for it to teleport away, the imagination needed to teleport is not possible when one is in excruciating pain. As the ape attempted to stop the bleeding with its other hand, Elena stared at it with an indifferent look, but deep within she was hurting.

As a Mind Shifter of the village, she serves her village, serves the council, she has no say in what should and shouldn't be done, nor who gets to live. Elena Looked at the Acid Chimp in pain, her heart ached with it, but she knew, Elena was but a cog, a cog in a larger machine, and broken ones get replaced.

In the next moment, the Acid Chimp regained its being, using Memorable Nerve to numb its right side. The Acid Chimp was about to escape, its body rippled and a smug smile shown on its face, in the last moment before it was gone, Elena took a step forward grabbing at its shoulders with a hand, this would delay the teleportation, and give just enough time for Costa to pierce its skull.

She watched as the Acid Chimp was filled with confusion then fear, tears shed from its eye as if begging Elena to let him live, but it was too late, the Acid Chimp got no answer from Elena as he was decapitated by an enchanted arrow.

Elena turned and walked away, a bitter taste in her mouth.

The battle was over, the battalion of troops cleansed the forest of the Acid Chimps that infested the lands. Memor and his trio returned back to their tent, where they were met with another party who came back before them.

Memor didn't linger long, his mind and body was way more fatigued than anyone of his peers, he dropped off his weapons and left the tent, as trouble was stirring inside between Yorgos and Demi.

What did I want to do again? Oh, right… Memor ventured to the far end of camp opposite to the Aplaires forest, he sat on the soft grass, enjoying the breeze as they came, at least that was what he wanted others to believe, in truth he was fishing. Memor laying on the grass was an invitation of sorts to the person tasked with reading his memories.

Memor sat there for the rest of the day, till the eclipsed moon beamed brightly in the sky, he was visited by Luni where they talked of the coming days and what pranks they should do when back at the village.

In the end it was a fruitless harvest. Late into the night, when most of the people were asleep, Memor stood up and walked back to his tent, before he made it past the outer rim of camp a clicking noise came from behind him.

looking behind him, Memor saw the silhouette of a person veiled in the darkness of a tent wall, which echoed the clicking their tongue. A faint smile crept onto Memor lips, he turned around and walked away.
