Chapter 23: The Ghost's Intervention - Bucky Barnes and the Highway

The world was reeling. S.H.I.E.L.D. was dead, Hydra exposed, and the global landscape had shifted dramatically. But for Adam, the biggest, most personal piece of the Winter Soldier puzzle was still unfolding: the highway chase. He sat in their new, more secure mobile command center – a heavily modified, untraceable RV – watching the live feeds, his team huddled around him.

"Okay, this is it," Adam said, his voice low. "Cap, Natasha, and Sam are on the highway. And they're about to meet the Winter Soldier. This is a critical point. I can't interfere too much, but I can't let Cap get killed either. And I need to make sure Bucky gets away, as per canon. It's a delicate dance."

Yelena's eyes were glued to the screen, watching the Winter Soldier's brutal efficiency. Her face was grim. "He's… he's fast. And that arm… it's terrifying. It's like a ghost from my own nightmares."

"He is," Adam confirmed, his gaze softening as he looked at her. He knew the echoes this brought up for her. "But he's also a victim. And he's going to need a long, painful road to recovery. Our job is to make sure he gets that chance."

[SYSTEM MESSAGE: CANON EVENT 'HIGHWAY CHASE' INITIATED. THREAT LEVEL: EXTREME. TARGET 'WINTER SOLDIER' ENGAGED. DOUBLE OPPONENT STRENGTH/SKILL ABSORPTION PROTOCOL ACTIVE FOR INTERVENTION. META-KNOWLEDGE GUIDANCE ACTIVE FOR 'INTERVENTION TIMING' AND 'NON-LETHAL ENGAGEMENT'.]

"Adam, your energy signature is fluctuating! You're going in, aren't you?!" Fitz exclaimed, his eyes wide.

"Just a quick cameo, Fitz. Gotta make sure the good guys don't get too flattened. Yelena, you're on remote support. If I need a distraction, a quick light-speed blur somewhere else on the highway, you give it to me. Simmons, prepare for remote medical diagnostics. If anyone gets too banged up, I'll need your input." Adam stood up, his adaptable body already tingling with anticipation, ready to shift and flow.

He vanished from the RV, reappearing in the chaos of the highway. The scene was even more intense in person. Cars were mangled, bullets were flying, and Captain America was fighting for his life against the relentless Winter Soldier. Bucky's metal arm flashed, delivering brutal blows, his movements precise, deadly.

Adam assessed the situation in a microsecond. Cap was getting overwhelmed. Bucky was about to land a devastating blow. Adam moved. He intercepted Bucky's metal arm, not with a block, but by perfectly mirroring its strength, then doubling it. The impact sent a shockwave through the air, and Bucky, for the first time, was thrown off balance, skidding back several feet.

"Hey, metal arm! You're fighting the wrong guy!" Adam yelled, his voice echoing over the gunfire. He didn't want to stop Bucky, just create a momentary diversion, a powerful, inexplicable force that would allow Cap to recover and ensure Bucky's escape.

Bucky stared at him, his masked eyes showing a flicker of confusion. He charged again, his movements a blur of trained aggression. Adam met him, blow for blow, matching his every move, then exceeding it. He was a perfect counter, a living mirror that reflected Bucky's power, then amplified it. He ducked under a kick, spun, and landed a precise, non-lethal strike to Bucky's pressure point, sending the Winter Soldier reeling.

Meanwhile, Cap, seeing his momentary reprieve, managed to get back on his feet. Natasha, ever the opportunist, used the distraction to land a few well-placed shots. Adam continued to engage Bucky, making it look like a brutal, evenly matched fight, but always ensuring Bucky had an escape route, always making sure his blows were incapacitating, not fatal.

"You're good," Adam muttered to Bucky, as he parried a furious punch. "But I'm better. And I know your next move." He delivered a final, powerful kick that sent Bucky flying over the side of the highway, landing safely (but out of sight) on a lower level, as per canon.

He turned to Cap and Natasha, who were staring at him, weapons raised, utterly bewildered. "You guys good? Looks like you had your hands full. Metal arm's a pain, isn't he? Very persistent."

Cap, breathing heavily, looked at him with wary respect. "Who are you? You just… you just matched him. And then some."

"Just a friendly neighborhood… well, not neighborhood, I'm kinda nomadic. But a friendly face. You're welcome. Now, if you'll excuse me, I've got a date with a very angry spy master." Adam winked, and then, with a subtle shimmer, he vanished, leaving Cap and Natasha utterly dumbfounded.

Back in the RV, Yelena was watching the feeds, a grim satisfaction on her face. "You were good, Adam. He didn't stand a chance."

"He's not supposed to. Just needed a nudge," Adam said, leaning back, exhausted but exhilarated. "Fury's probably having a stroke right now. Another Ghost sighting. Another impossible feat. He's going to be so mad."

And indeed, miles away, in a secure S.H.I.E.L.D. safe house, Nick Fury was staring at the reports, his single eye twitching. "The Ghost. Again. He just… appeared. Fought the Winter Soldier. And then vanished. Who is this guy?! And why does he keep showing up in the middle of my biggest headaches?!"

Adam grinned. He had protected his team, subtly aided the Avengers, and ensured the timeline stayed on track. And he had given Fury another reason to lose sleep. All in a day's work for the Adapt-Alliance.
