Chapter 13: 13
"Sorry, I... Do I know you?" Keiji asked, pulling away from the hug, uncomfortable.
The woman stopped, apparently looking at him open-mouthed, surprised for some reason after he asked that very basic question.
Then, he realized she was shaking her head, probably in denial. Later, this woman seemed surprised for another reason he also has no idea about, before waving her hand in front of Keiji's face.
"You... Can you see this?"
Honestly, Keiji couldn't see anything. Everything was dark, actually.
However, he could perceive the presence, movements, and shapes of everything around him.
It was in this way that he realized it was a woman who had been standing at the door earlier, and it was in the same manner that he noticed this woman, who apparently knew him, had a scar on her face.
Keiji noticed that his awareness seemed to extend to a certain limit; he could perceive everything and everyone around him within a circle of several meters in radius.
He was able to hear conversations, footsteps on some floors, the movement of people sleeping in beds in most of the rooms. He could also "see" the amount of dust particles present in some places in this room, and he was impressed when he realized that he also knew the exact number of dust particles.
Momentarily, Keiji could "see" something that was probably a bird. That bird was flying over the top of this place, a place that had the shape of a very large building. However, Keiji couldn't see the bird when it flew outside the boundaries of this circle.
He realized that all of this was like some kind of quite limited omniscience, he believes.
However, despite being able to perceive all of this, Keiji couldn't really see. He noticed the shape of his own eyes, and understood what they were made of.
His eyes were glass ocular prosthesis.
"I can't see you. I don't see anything, actually. Everything... Everything is dark."
The woman stopped, and from what he could tell, she was staring at him before lowering her head and sitting down beside him.
"You... Do you remember anything?"
Keiji fell silent, thinking about the question before answering.
"I remember being beaten, and I think I remember sounds that seemed like gunshots. It's not much, really... And who are you?"
"I... I am your sister. I am Keiko."
"That name..." He murmured, wondering why he felt a familiarity upon hearing that person's name, before he felt a strong migraine on both sides of his head, a pain that was initially a moderate pain that expanded, along with nausea.
The woman ran, leaving the room and heading to the hallway, calling another woman amidst screams. A few minutes later, this person named Keiko returned, along with several other people. He noticed that these people were wearing what were probably lab coats.
While Keiji screamed in pain, lying down with his hands covering his ears, he seemed to see vivid and colorful images emerging within his mind.
They were memories. They are the two sets of memories that hid in the depths of his consciousness, they are the memories he ended up forgetting, even if momentarily.
He saw and understood everything that was in those memories.
April 20, 2003, his birthday, was the day some guys decided to knock on his door in the middle of the night, looking for his sister, for some reason.
He refused to say where she was, and was beaten for it. Keiji still feels the phantom pain from the seemingly endless kicks, punches, knee strikes, and stomps.
From the moment he started being beaten by those five people, Keiji had Zetsu activated.
That night, he was completely vulnerable.
This happened for a reason that, now, he considers to have been something risky.
That had been a last-minute action executed by a foolish, selfish, and megalomaniacal person with ridiculous delusions of becoming an existence more than omnipotent.
Keiji had been that selfish and megalomaniacal fool, and now he feels disgusted with himself.
However, he realizes that if it weren't for that risky action, he doesn't think he would be here, alive.
Before being fatally injured, Keiji had developed a rather interesting Hatsu.
He is still alive because of this Hatsu.
It's a Hatsu that has specific conditions to be truly activated, a Hatsu that he called "Green Retriever."
The condition is to keep Zetsu activated before receiving more than one fatally serious blow.
After the activation conditions are met, a fluorescent dog with green fur, very similar to a Golden Retriever, will be summoned.
This dog will have a single command to be fulfilled. And that command is to keep him alive by preventing his organs from stopping functioning; while gradually healing the injuries inflicted on the user.
It's not an instant cure, far from it. It is gradual, taking enough time to last several years.
This dog has the ability to sense and draw in negative emotions from an environment, transforming all these emotions into a glowing sphere of vital energy that is injected into the user's body, aiming to slowly heal all wounds.
His eyes were not regenerated because the healing process is extremely slow, and his precious eyes, which were damaged by bullets, were removed before they began to regenerate.
That's why Keiji is permanently blind.
His vocal cords were reconstructed, however. He is genuinely happy to be able to hear his own voice, and he cries tears of joy because of it.
Keiji remained in that deep sleep that felt almost anesthetic due to the effects of this ability. This makes him rest throughout the entire recovery process, protecting his consciousness.
This healing process lasted exactly 6 years, apparently, and this time was more than enough for him to forget various things about himself, enough time for him to forget many things about the people who are important to him.
"You become responsible, forever, for what you have tamed," a phrase by the author Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, in the book The Little Prince, came to his mind almost immediately.
The author meant that the one who is loved becomes responsible for the other, for the one who harbors affection for them. This teaching tells us that we must be prudent with the feelings of those who love us.
And from what he could see, Keiji had not taken Keiko's feelings into account, neither on her 6th birthday nor before that.
Keiji gradually opened his eyes, realizing that he hadn't truly held his sister's feelings in high regard. Now, he feels a horrible sensation in his chest, wondering why he had been so... so deceitful.
Keiji realized that he had always been an example of deceit since the day his consciousness was transferred to this universe. Since that day, since the day he discovered he had the ability to control and manipulate his life energy, Keiji was driven by a delirious quest for some kind of absolute power, without considering the feelings and thoughts of truly important people, of people he secretly harbored malicious thoughts about.
And that job of his, which should have been something to earn money to pay the bills his sister couldn't, was of no use at all.
Keiji realized that his true purpose with all of this was to distance himself from his sister, whom he had come to consider as less than a burden in his deepest thoughts. And now he sees that the money he managed to earn from that useless work was practically worthless, that money didn't help anyone.
It was six long years without any contact with the world...
It was six long years without being able to feel the wind ruffle his hair...
It was six long years that he left his sister worried and alone.
Feeling an indescribable rage at himself, which quickly turned into hatred, Keiji let out a long, savage scream before starting to punch himself repeatedly, with no intention of stopping.
His only and greatest desire is to see the blood of that cunning animal fall to the ground until nothing remains, seeking to leave no trace of the existence of that incomprehensible being he realized he always was.
However, Keiji was stopped by the nurses and doctors, who held his wrists before he could hurt himself any more than he already had.
He stopped moving his fists when he realized his sister was crying.
Keiji slowly lowered his arm, breathing deeply through his nose and exhaling through his mouth.
"Before, I decided that I would have no limits to follow."
"Now, I decree that I will have restrictions to be followed."
