Chapter 22: Poison
"Its clear that you have a penchant for returning late!" Violet heard Cain say the seond she pushed open and the door and slowly went into the room.
Violet hastening her steps as she closed the door behind her and hurriedly moved closer to him with the report in her hands, before placing the red folder on the table.
"I-I Apologize Lord Cain!" Violet instantly said when she realized that instead of ignoring her like he previously did before, he focused his gaze intensely on her instead.
"Lets hear it! What's your excuse?" He asked her and Violet's mouth dropped agape at the sudden and unexpected question as she gain began to stutter for a response.
"I-I..." she began wondering how she could possibly tell him that she had seen his vice, literally whiping people to death as they screamed for mercy until their last breath.
'How can I complain when he himself isn;t any different?' she wondered recalling the many people she had seen Cain himself kill.
"I should have brought it faster. I swear, this won't happen again!" she responded lifting her head ever so slightly and vigorously bowing her head to show just how sincere she truly was.
Her heart slowly relaxing when she saw Cain drag the red folder she had placed on his table closer to himself, before ordering her to do something else.
Something a little unexpected but that didn't stop her from immediatly moving to do it.
"Light that candle!" he ordered gesturing to the one of the colourful candles on his table. Violet, grabbing a lighter as fast as she could and doing as she was told. A little surprised by the nice fragrance she smelt waffting from it even as she moved to step back behind Cain, where it would be easy for him to again ignore her.
Which was why when she heard him speak again, her face instantly turned as pale as white sheet when she heard the words Cain directly spoke to her.
"Place your hand over the candle until I tell you to remove it!" His gaze more on the drawer he was riffling through as he brought out a long knife, one she had never seen before, and one whose sharpness rivaled the one Ravon had handed over to her before she plunged it into her hand.
"If yoy remove your hand without me giving you the order, I'll slice off your pinky finger!" Speaking in a conversational tone like he was simply asking her to stand still and do nothing.
His eyes intense as he focused them fully on her, Violet staring into golden brown eyes which scared , having completely forgotten how attractive she found them as she realized that if she didn't do as she was asked, he would indeed do as he said.
A heartbeat later, Violet lifted her uninjured hand and placed it over the flame of the candle, a little higher in a way that would prevent most of the heat from immediately getting to her.
Convinced that Cain would instantly correct her, only to watch as he completely turned away from her, his focus on the folder in front of him instead. Picking up a pen as he slowly began to note something inside of the folder which she couldn't see.
Seconds slowly passed, yet with each one Violet felt like minutes had gone by as she watched the heat slwoly soak into her hand, gradually. Unnoticable at first, until it was all she could think of yet Cain hadn't even glanced in her direction.
It was barely half a minute when Violet began to heave unable to hide her pain any longer and the growing panic in her chest when she realized that Cain might not give her permission to remove her hand.
Yet the horror of losing a finger, was more than the horror of getting burnt and regardless of it, she endured. Tears filling her eyes, as she stamped down the urge to scream until she could no longer do so as she felt her skin slowly begin to burn.
"Please!" she gasped out with gritted teeth, eyes fresh with unshed tears even as she watched Cain continue to sign in pages, his eyes glazing through them.
"Please!!! I swear!! Just please!!" she begged with all she could, eyes squeezed shut in pain as she realized that she coud no longer keep her hand there any longer, as much as she wanted to.
"Remove your hand" Cain suddenly said but Violet was already moving her hand before he was done speaking, fresh tears running down her face as she stared at the ground, crying as silently as she could muster.
The pain had dissappeared but the tension in her heart only seemed to swell. The constant fear from waiting for her eyes to be gorged, fingers sliced off, body whipped to death everywhere had strained every single one of her nerves to the breaking point as she slowly began to sob aloud.
Hiccuping in-between as her tears flowed like a stream. It didn't help that Cain's attention was now fully centered on her, without once looking away from her.
"For a man, you cry like a little girl!' he sighed a trace of annoyance in his tone when he spoke, but Violet was too far gone to care, as she realized for all she knew, by evening he could simply tell her to jump in a furnace.
Still she knew her boundaries, as she slowly began to wipe off her tears only to feel new ones replace them unable to stop the dam she already unleashed.
"Top shelf, topmost drawer. Bring out two vials!" Cain ordered and Violet found her body moving instinctively to the order, as sh ewiped her face harder to brighten her blurred vision as she fished out the vials from where he had pointed them out to be.
Surprised to see their blue color which was different from the one she had gotten from Ravon.
"He-here Lord Cain!" she said placing them on the table when she heard him speak again, words that made her entire body freeze as she stared at him with red teary eyes.
"Drink it!" His eyes focused entirely on her, but all she saw were cold golden brown eyes staring soulessly at her without any single emotion reflected in those eyes.
For a second, Violet hesitated but it was all the time she needed to pick up one of the vials and immediately toss it down her throat. Half hoping that it was a fast acting poison that would completely erase her existence.
'I can't live like this!' Her eyes dim, as she stared at the ground waiting for the poison to kick in.
