Master of divine shards

Chapter 15: The siege of the black spire

The Black Spire loomed ahead, its dark silhouette clawing at the storm-laden sky. The oppressive hum of power emanating from the tower pressed down on the group like a physical weight. Eren stood at the crest of the dune, his jaw set in grim determination.

Kael scanned the enemy camp below. The soldiers and monstrosities patrolling the spire's base moved with military precision, their weapons gleaming ominously under the dim light of the storm clouds.

"We're outnumbered," Kael said. "Charging in is suicide."

Eren's gaze never left the spire. "We don't have time for caution. The fragment is inside. I can feel it."

Liora stepped forward, placing a hand on Eren's arm. "We'll find a way, but we can't win if we're reckless. Let's think this through."

Kael pointed to a narrow ravine cutting through the dunes to the left of the spire. "That might be our way in. It looks like it leads closer to the base without being exposed."

Eren hesitated, the fragments in his possession pulsing faintly, as though urging him to act. Finally, he nodded. "Fine. But we don't stop for anything. The fragment is our priority."

The Ravine Approach

The trio moved through the ravine, their footsteps muffled by the shifting sand. The walls of the passage were jagged and blackened, as though scorched by ancient flames. The oppressive energy from the spire grew stronger with each step, making it harder to breathe.

"Stay quiet," Kael whispered, his hand resting on the hilt of his greatsword.

Liora followed closely, her bow ready, her sharp eyes scanning the shadows. Eren led the way, his grip on his sword tight as the whispers of the fragments grew louder in his mind.

They reached the end of the ravine and crouched behind a cluster of boulders. From their vantage point, they could see a small side entrance to the spire, guarded by two hulking creatures. Their forms were grotesque, with molten cracks running along their rocky skin and glowing red eyes.

"Those aren't ordinary guards," Liora murmured.

"No," Kael said grimly. "They're infused with Malrik's corruption. We'll have to take them out together."

Eren stepped forward, the fragments' glow intensifying. "I'll handle them. Stay back."

Kael grabbed his arm. "No. We do this together."

Eren glared at him, but the intensity in Kael's eyes made him pause. Finally, Eren relented, though his frustration was evident.

The Silent Strike

Liora notched an arrow and took aim at the nearest guard. The arrow flew true, striking the creature's glowing eye. It roared in pain, its body convulsing as it struggled to locate the source of the attack.

Kael charged forward, his greatsword swinging in a wide arc. The blade connected with the second guard's neck, sending molten sparks flying. The creature staggered but didn't fall, its corrupted strength keeping it upright.

Eren joined the fray, his sword blazing with the power of the fragments. He delivered a precise strike to the first guard's chest, the energy of the fragments tearing through its molten core. The creature let out a final, guttural cry before collapsing into a heap of ash and stone.

The second guard turned on Liora, its massive fist slamming into the ground where she had been moments before. She rolled to the side and fired another arrow, this one striking its exposed chest.

Kael seized the opening, driving his sword into the creature's core. The guard let out a deafening roar before disintegrating.

The group stood over the remains, their breathing heavy but victorious.

"Good work," Kael said, nodding to Liora.

Eren didn't respond. He was already moving toward the spire's entrance.

Inside the Black Spire

The interior of the spire was a labyrinth of shadowed corridors and pulsating walls that seemed to breathe. The air was thick with the stench of decay, and the oppressive hum of the fragments' energy was almost unbearable.

"We need to move quickly," Eren said, his voice tight.

They navigated the twisting hallways, encountering traps and smaller patrols along the way. Eren's combat prowess, enhanced by the fragments, allowed them to dispatch enemies with brutal efficiency.

But with each fight, Kael and Liora grew more concerned. Eren's movements were sharper, more aggressive, and the glow of the fragments in his possession seemed to seep into his very being.

"You're pushing too hard," Liora said as they paused in a dimly lit chamber to catch their breath.

"I'm doing what needs to be done," Eren snapped.

Kael stepped between them, his voice low but firm. "You're risking more than just yourself. Don't let the fragments consume you."

Eren's eyes burned with a mixture of defiance and desperation. "I can handle it."

Before Kael could respond, the ground beneath them trembled. A deep, guttural roar echoed through the spire, followed by the sound of heavy footsteps.

"Something's coming," Liora warned, notching an arrow.

---

The Fragment's Guardian

The doorway ahead of them shattered, and a massive creature emerged. Its form was a grotesque fusion of flesh and metal, its four arms ending in jagged claws, and its single eye glowing with a malevolent light.

"The guardian," Eren said, stepping forward.

Kael grabbed his shoulder. "We need a plan."

"There's no time," Eren replied, breaking free of Kael's grip.

The guardian roared and charged. Eren met it head-on, his sword blazing with the fragments' power. The clash of steel and energy filled the chamber as Eren unleashed a flurry of strikes, each one leaving deep gashes in the guardian's armored body.

Kael and Liora flanked the creature, their attacks coordinated and precise. Liora's arrows found weak points in its joints, while Kael's greatsword delivered devastating blows to its limbs.

Despite their combined efforts, the guardian was relentless, its strength and speed forcing them to fight with every ounce of skill and resolve they had.

Eren's movements grew increasingly erratic, the power of the fragments coursing through him in uncontrollable surges. His strikes became wilder, more destructive, and his eyes glowed with an unnatural light.

"Eren, stop!" Liora shouted, her voice filled with fear.

But Eren didn't hear her. With a final, devastating blow, he drove his sword into the guardian's core, unleashing a surge of energy that obliterated the creature—and left the chamber trembling with instability.

The Cost of Power

As the dust settled, Eren stood amidst the remains of the guardian, his breathing ragged and his body trembling. The glow of the fragments in his possession was blinding, their whispers louder than ever.

Kael approached cautiously. "Eren, are you—"

"I'm fine," Eren interrupted, his voice strained.

Liora stepped forward, her expression filled with concern. "You're not. The fragments... they're taking over."

Eren turned to face them, his eyes burning with a dangerous light. "I said I'm fine. Now let's finish this."

Without waiting for a response, he strode toward the next corridor, leaving Kael and Liora to exchange worried glances.
