Chapter 23: Colleen is poisoned
"It's been four days," Rex murmured. "I'll answer your questions later. Right now, we need to check on Colleen."
Lorna nodded. Rex pulled out his phone, but realized it didn't allow international calls.
They looked at each other, unsure. "Maybe she's back," Rex said. "I'll go to the Dojo."
"I'm going too!"
Fearful of the danger Rex had described, Lorna didn't want to waste any more time and followed him out.
A few moments later, Peter emerged from the utility room, carrying a bag of rice. "Boss? Lorna? Hello?" he called out. Getting no answer, he looked around the empty restaurant. "What happened? What should I do? I have school..."
At the same time, Rex stood at the Dojo door and knocked. He heard footsteps approaching. The door opened slightly, revealing a beautiful figure. "Joy?" Rex said, surprised.
Joy was surprised. "I should be asking you that," she said, noticing Lorna behind Rex. "Rex, why did you come?"
"I'm an old friend of Colleen's," Rex said. "We've known each other for years. This is Lorna, you know her from the restaurant. She's also Colleen's student."
Joy stepped aside. "Come in, let's talk. You have to help me, Rex. Convince Colleen to go to the hospital. She's in bad shape!"
"What happened to Sensei? Where is she?" Lorna asked anxiously.
"In the back bedroom."
Joy pointed to the bedroom. "We went to China with Danny to investigate the Hand. There was a fight, and Colleen got a small cut on her arm. I thought it was nothing, but her enemy's weapon was poisoned!"
Rex nodded. His fears had come true. He sighed. Because of him, Danny hadn't been sent to a mental hospital by Joy, so he shouldn't have needed Colleen's help to get out. But things had happened, and they'd ended up in China anyway, with Joy this time, and without Claire Temple. And Colleen was poisoned.
Rex knew why Colleen wouldn't go to a hospital. She was probably waiting for Bakuto, her Sensei, who could detoxify her. Western medicine wouldn't be able to help her in time against this Chinese poison.
Rex followed Joy to the room and saw Colleen in bed, her face pale, her lips blue. She was sweating, struggling to speak. "Don't worry, Lorna," she said. "I'll be okay. My Sensei will detoxify me."
"Oh, Colleen! That's awful!" Rex approached the bed, his face emotionless. "It seems the change in climate didn't agree with you."
"You're terrible..." Colleen muttered. If she wasn't so weak, she would have jumped at him. "Rex, if you're not going to say anything nice, just shut up!"
"Ugh, you have no sense of humor!" Rex broke character and smiled. "Joy, why are you two alone? Where's Danny?"
"Danny went to the pharmacy for antibiotics."
Joy looked at her watch anxiously. "He should be back soon."
Lorna was weeping softly. Rex patted her shoulder. "Don't cry," he said, smiling. "I'm here. I won't let her die."
"Boss, you can really cure Sensei?" Lorna's eyes lit up.
"Of course, this is nothing!" Rex paused, watching their jaws drop. "But I have to wait for Danny Rand. I need to use the Iron Fist he got from Shou-Lao."
"..."
"The three were speechless. Lorna looked back at Colleen, then at Rex. "Boss, is that really reliable? You sound very confident..."
"How can I rely on it? I..." Rex began, but Colleen interrupted. "Rex, who's Shou-Lao?"
"Not who, what! Shou-Lao is a dragon, Kunlun's Undying Dragon. He's been alive for thousands of years."
"Dragon... That's just a myth!" Colleen murmured, disbelieving.
"If you don't believe me, ask Danny!" Rex turned, as if seeing through the wall. "He's already at the door."
Just then, the door was knocked. "Joy, I'm back! Open the door!" Danny's voice called out.
Colleen and Joy stared at Rex, stunned. Lorna, thoughtfully, guessed, "Ki Sense?"
Rex nodded silently, confirming her guess. "Aren't you going to open the door?" he reminded Joy.
"Oh!" Joy quickly opened the door, returning with Danny, who had a pharmacy bag in his hand.
