Chapter 46: Chapter 46: The Hero Arrives
"What do you mean completely overwhelmed?"
At SHIELD headquarters, Nick Fury's voice carried an edge of disbelief as he processed the field reports coming in from Stark Tower. The situation was deteriorating far faster than anyone had anticipated.
"Where's Captain Rogers? What's Agent Romanoff's status?" he demanded.
Natasha's voice crackled through the communication system, though there was something distinctly strained about her tone.
"I'm... currently taking cover in the building's ventilation system," she reported with obvious reluctance.
The truth was somewhat more embarrassing than she cared to admit. In her haste to escape the mutated bullfrog's devastating attacks, she had attempted to crawl into an air duct for safety. Unfortunately, the confined space had proven to be a tactical error—she was now wedged halfway through the opening, unable to move forward or backward.
It was hardly the kind of predicament that enhanced SHIELD's reputation for operational excellence.
"And Captain Rogers?" Fury pressed.
"He's... drawing the creature away from civilian areas," Natasha replied diplomatically.
What she didn't say out loud was that Steve had seriously underestimated just how destructive the bullfrog really was. Sure, his vibranium shield held up against the initial strike—but he hadn't counted on the raw force behind it. The impact didn't just stop at the shield—it shattered the floor beneath him, sending both Steve and the oversized frog crashing down through several levels of the building.
Steve himself was largely unharmed—his enhanced physiology made him remarkably difficult to kill—but the fall had separated him from his shield, leaving him at a severe tactical disadvantage.
The SHIELD tactical team that had been deployed to provide backup fared considerably worse. Their concentrated firepower had proven completely ineffective against the creature's enhanced hide, and the bullfrog had retaliated by using its massive tongue like a medieval flail. Several agents had been caught directly in the path of the tounge, suffering injuries comparable to being struck by a speeding vehicle. Those lucky enough to avoid direct contact were still thrown around like ragdolls by the tremendous forces involved.
Fury absorbed this information in stunned silence. These were some of SHIELD's most elite operatives, and they had been neutralized in a matter of minutes by a single mutated creature.
"Son of a bitch," he muttered, his frustration boiling over.
The current crisis was making it painfully clear that SHIELD needed a team of enhanced individuals who could handle threats beyond the scope of conventional military assets. The Avengers Initiative was no longer a theoretical contingency—it was an immediate operational necessity.
But theoretical future planning didn't solve his current problem.
Fury reached for an antiquated communication device that he kept secured in his desk drawer—a modified pager that could reach across the galaxy if necessary. His finger hovered over the activation switch as he wrestled with the implications.
"Do I really need to call Carol back to deal with an oversized frog?" he wondered aloud.
Bringing Captain Marvel back to Earth for what amounted to pest control seemed like a massive overreaction, even by his standards.
"If it comes to it, I can greenlight heavy ordnance," he thought grimly.
Regardless of its enhanced capabilities, the creature was still ultimately a biological entity. A concentrated missile barrage would certainly eliminate the threat, but the collateral damage would be catastrophic. Stark Tower was located in the heart of Manhattan's financial district, surrounded by some of the most valuable real estate on the planet.
The economic impact of destroying several city blocks would be measured in hundreds of billions of dollars. But if the alternative was allowing the creatures to spread throughout New York...
Fury was still weighing his options when Captain America's voice cut through the communication channel.
"I've got a plan—an actual plan this time," Steve called out, a bit winded as he dodged another wild strike from the bullfrog. "Its outer armor's too tough for regular weapons, but I'm betting the inside isn't built the same way."
"What are you proposing, Captain?" Fury asked.
Steve had been weighing a few tactical options—most of them involving some very creative use of explosives aimed at the creature's soft spots. But with his reputation and a live audience listening in, he figured he'd keep it simple.
"I'm going to feed it some high explosives," he said matter-of-factly.
"Leave that to me," Hawkeye interjected from his overwatch position on a neighboring rooftop.
Clint Barton had been providing sniper support for Tony's aerial battle, and his precision shooting had proven remarkably effective. He had already managed to blind the mutated bird in one eye with a perfectly placed arrow, and his elevated position gave him an excellent view of Dr. Animo's operation.
"Captain, if you can lure the bullfrog up to the roof level, I can deliver a special package directly down its throat," Hawkeye continued, already beginning to bundle his remaining explosive arrows into a single, devastating projectile.
Steve trusted his aim, no question—but he knew that when it came to precision shots with specialized gear, Hawkeye was the better man for the job.
"Understood," Steve replied. "Moving to the roof now."
What followed was a harrowing chase sequence through Stark Tower's compromised interior. The bullfrog had essentially gutted the building's internal structure, leaving behind a maze of twisted metal and unstable debris. Steve found himself leaping across gaps in the floor, dodging massive tongue strikes, and using his enhanced agility to stay just ahead of the creature's relentless pursuit.
When he finally burst through the rooftop access door, he nearly collided with Tony Stark's Iron Man armor as it streaked past in pursuit of the bird.
"Who the hell are you supposed to be?" Tony called out, not immediately recognizing the period-appropriate costume.
Steve didn't have time for introductions. He rolled sideways just as the mutated bullfrog exploded through the roof like a living wrecking ball, sending chunks of concrete and steel flying in all directions.
The creature reared back and launched its tongue like a massive whip. Hawkeye, who had been waiting for exactly this moment, released his explosive arrow with perfect timing.
The projectile flew in a perfect arc, disappearing down the bullfrog's throat just as it opened its mouth for another attack.
"Target that size isn't much of a challenge," Hawkeye commented with professional satisfaction.
For a moment, the bullfrog seemed confused, as if it had swallowed something unexpected. Then came the muffled sound of multiple explosions detonating simultaneously inside its body cavity.
The creature's entire form swelled like a balloon as the internal blast wave expanded through its organs. Thick black smoke began pouring from its mouth and nostrils, and its eyes rolled back as it toppled backward onto the rooftop.
"Nice shot!" Steve shouted, grinning as he pumped his fist in triumph.
From his spot in the air, Tony watched the takedown and gave an approving nod. "Internal demolition—gotta say, I like the style. Think we can pull the same trick on the flying one?"
Unfortunately, the airborne creature was a whole different problem. Its anatomy and flight patterns made it a far tougher target. Unlike the bullfrog's oversized mouth, the bird's narrow beak left little room for error—landing a precise shot would be next to impossible.
The destruction of his prize specimen naturally drew Dr. Animo's attention away from his equipment. He had been making final adjustments to the Canary Device when the explosion occurred, and the sight of his mutated creation lying motionless on the rooftop filled him with rage.
"Surrender!" Steve commanded, raising his shield in a ready position.
"You've got it backwards!" Dr. Animo snarled, stepping forward with obvious fury. "You should be the ones surrendering to me—the brilliant geneticist Dr. Animo!"
Without warning, he grabbed a large syringe filled with an ominous blue fluid and plunged it directly into his own neck.
The transformation began immediately and was far more dramatic than anything they had witnessed before.
Dr. Animo's skin took on a deep blue coloration as his entire body expanded to several times its original size. But unlike Connors' relatively straightforward reptilian changes, Animo's mutation was a horrifying amalgamation of prehistoric creatures.
Curved tusks erupted from his skull—clearly derived from mammoth DNA. His mouth filled with saber-toothed cat fangs, each one sharp enough to pierce steel. Most dramatically, a pair of massive pterodactyl wings burst from his back, each one spanning nearly twenty feet.
The result was a creature that looked like it had emerged from humanity's darkest nightmares—a prehistoric chimera that combined the most dangerous attributes of multiple extinct species.
Before arriving at Stark Tower, Dr. Animo had made a detour to the Museum of Natural History, where he had harvested genetic material from numerous paleontological specimens. The mutation device had allowed him to integrate all of these traits into a single, terrifyingly powerful form.
"Such incredible power!" Animo roared, his voice now carrying an inhuman resonance that shook the building's remaining windows.
He stood over Captain America, his huge body blocking out the sun. Without warning, he lunged forward, moving fast—too fast. His clawed hand clamped around Steve's torso like a vice, lifting him off the ground with ease.
The impact of Animo's grab sent both of them crashing through the roof and down through multiple floors of the building. Each level they passed through collapsed like cardboard, unable to withstand the tremendous forces involved. Steel beams bent like pretzels, concrete shattered like glass, and the building's entire structural integrity began to fail.
They plummeted from the top floor all the way down to the ground level lobby, creating a perfectly vertical shaft through the heart of Stark Tower. When they finally hit bottom, Steve was barely conscious, his enhanced physiology pushed to its absolute limits by the catastrophic impact.
Dr. Animo, on the other hand, seemed completely unaffected by the fall. He stood over Steve's prone form like a conquering demon, his eyes glowing with sadistic satisfaction.
"Now you see how pointless it is to fight evolution," Animo growled, lifting one massive claw to strike the killing blow.
At SHIELD headquarters, Fury listened to the deteriorating situation reports with growing alarm. All communication with his field agents had been lost, and aerial reconnaissance showed Stark Tower collapsing from the inside out.
"Prepare immediate missile strike authorization for coordinates..." he began, reaching for the nuclear option.
"Wait!" Hawkeye's voice suddenly cut through the communication channel. "Something's happening! We've got a new contact incoming!"
From his elevated position, Clint had the best view of the developing situation. What he saw defied easy explanation—a streak of orange and red flame was descending from the sky like a living meteor.
"I can't explain it, but this one doesn't feel hostile," he reported, watching in fascination as the fiery figure adjusted its trajectory.
The burning shape slammed into the mutated bird with devastating force, carrying both creatures through the compromised structure of Stark Tower in a controlled dive that sent shockwaves through the building's foundation.
When the flames cleared, Ben stood in the center of the destruction, now transformed into Heatblast—his body composed of living magma and his head crowned with flames that reached toward the ceiling.
