Chapter 121: Chapter 121: The Conspiracy of the Hell Gods
Jason stood at the center of Times Square, watching the ceremonial unveiling of the new statue with barely concealed satisfaction. The massive bronze monument captured the Avengers in heroic poses, with Jason himself positioned front and center – exactly where a true leader belonged.
This was the fruit of his carefully negotiated deal with President Penn. Similar monuments would sprout throughout New York City like metallic flowers – over a dozen in total. Beyond the Big Apple, cities across America would gradually erect these testaments to heroism.
Most statues featured Jason alone in solitary glory, while only select installations depicted the full Avengers team. This calculated imbalance was already bearing fruit – his follower count had accelerated beyond previous growth rates. Today, the number of true believers approached one and a half million souls.
But Jason's ambitions extended far beyond mere followers. He needed residents for his God Dimension. What kind of God Domain exists without subjects to rule?
His domain promised genuine safety and boundless resources. Early experiments proved that agriculture and animal husbandry thrived exactly as they would on Earth. He wielded absolute control over natural phenomena – no droughts, no floods, no pestilence could touch his realm.
Plant seeds, reap harvests. Work hard, prosper greatly. His kingdom offered paradise itself.
In essence, as long as the inhabitants provided steady faith energy, he could sustain them indefinitely. But introducing this concept to the masses without triggering suspicion posed a delicate challenge.
The ambitious project of transforming his divine realm into a modern metropolis demanded tremendous resources. Every day, Jason channeled the growing stream of faith energy into construction. Skyscrapers manifested with a thought, bridges spanning reality with another. Though divinely powered, the sheer scale consumed time and power steadily. Rome wasn't built in a day – even for gods.
…
At Stark Tower, the "pardoned" billionaire brooded under constant surveillance. Government agents monitored his every move, transforming his penthouse into a gilded cage. New York became his entire world, and any special requests required White House approval.
Stark's frustration simmered just below boiling. What a ridiculous situation! One minute he's reaching for a mysterious hammer, the next he's waking up as Earth's would-be destroyer. The injustice rankled like a festering wound.
True, certain contingency plans existed in his files, but nothing approaching planetary annihilation!
After spending twenty minutes in contemplative solitude, three sharp knocks interrupted his brooding. As he washed his face and prepared to emerge, his reflection in the mirror shimmered and distorted.
An elderly gentleman with an ornate cane materialized behind him. Mephisto himself.
Rather than panicking, Stark's tone carried accusation. "What the hell was that? Your vaunted power couldn't prevent some cosmic hammer from hijacking my mind? Look at my life now – I'm under house arrest!"
Mephisto completely disregarded his complaints, smiling with predatory satisfaction. "Stark, I'm here to fulfill our binding contract."
"What?" Stark froze, then protested vehemently. "Our agreement clearly stated otherwise! You only collect my soul after natural death! Are you backing out of our deal, Mephisto?"
The demon lord chuckled darkly. "Haven't you learned? Never make a deal with the devil. I possess nine distinct methods to circumvent our contract's wording and claim your soul whenever I desire."
Stark's face drained of color. "No... you can't do this to me!"
"Why not? The moment you signed, you sealed your fate. You've been dead already, just didn't realize it yet!"
With those words, Mephisto stepped forward, merging seamlessly into Stark's soul. The billionaire's eyes immediately turned obsidian black, veins bulging grotesquely across his skin. His mouth worked soundlessly as his body collapsed like a marionette with severed strings.
"BANG!" More knocking. "Mr. Stark? Are you alright in there?"
"...I'm fine!" The response came after a pause. Stark rose from the floor, his demonic pupils slowly transitioning to a normal appearance. He smoothed his wrinkled designer suit, a sinister smile spreading across his face.
Let the games begin.
…
Jason had barely returned from the statue unveiling when alarming reports flooded the Avengers' communication channels.
Something unprecedented had occurred throughout New York City. In every major cathedral – including the venerable St. Patrick's – every statue of Jesus, God, and the Virgin Mary had vanished overnight! The sacred icons disappeared without trace or explanation.
Even more disturbing, crosses in countless smaller churches had been mysteriously inverted!
Beyond the physical manifestations, numerous respected clergy members had simply ceased to exist, leaving no forwarding information or explanation. These were the unmistakable signs of Satan's influence – the ancient symbols of demonic mockery.
Terror gripped the city instantly. Devout believers swarmed to churches, desperately re-erecting crosses and maintaining continuous prayer vigils. Their efforts proved futile – no divine response came, no matter how fervent their pleas.
Worse still, regardless of whether crosses were newly installed or centuries old, an invisible force toppled them at precisely midnight each night. New York had transformed into what people whispered about as the "City Under Curse."
The Avengers received these reports with growing concern, but lacked any experience combating supernatural phenomena of this magnitude.
Jason strongly suspected these events traced back to Hell's denizens. He made a special journey to Kamar-Taj, where he found the future Sorcerer Supreme, Doctor Strange, already deep in his studies.
Observing Strange struggle with basic portal creation, Jason couldn't resist commenting. "Master, this lanky fellow is your chosen successor? No matter how I examine him, he pales in comparison to me!"
The Ancient One regarded him with characteristic serenity. "He possesses wisdom, courage, and most importantly, a spirit of sacrifice. What do you offer?"
"The so-called spirit of sacrifice merely serves as an excuse the weak use to mask their own inadequacies. Someone of my caliber needs no such concept – only my enemies require sacrifice!"
The Ancient One maintained her composed silence, neither agreeing nor arguing.
Jason shrugged casually. "When will you address the New York situation, Master?"
Ancient One shook her head with visible concern. "Dormammu's influence has penetrated Earth's defenses more deeply than anticipated. I must address this threat first."
Jason displayed genuine surprise. "New York faces potential destruction, and you're leaving it unattended?"
"A traitor has emerged within Kamar-Taj – one familiar with Earth's magical defense network. Should they ally with Dormammu, the entire planet faces annihilation."
"So... the Hell invasion in New York isn't a priority?"
The Ancient One clarified carefully, "It's not insignificant, but depends entirely on you. I can share critical information: Hell's demons aren't primarily targeting New York this time. Nor even Earth itself."
This revelation struck Jason like lightning. Not Earth? Then...
Memories from his encounter with the Saint Vanganza spirits suddenly clicked into place, forming a terrifying picture.
"Their target is..." Jason pointed heavenward without finishing the thought.
Ancient One nodded gravely.
These demons possess incredible audacity! They were literally turning the cosmic order upside down!
Jason frowned deeply. "If they succeed, won't reality itself be endangered?"
The Ancient One shook her head with absolute certainty. "Once this crisis concludes, I will reconfigure the protective wards. Neither Hell nor Heaven will penetrate Earth's boundaries again."
Jason gaped at the sheer audacity. Such overwhelming authority!
His mind raced with possibilities. "Master, regarding Dormammu finding numerous traitors within Kamar-Taj for his Earth invasion..."
Ancient One studied him cautiously. "Yes?"
"Will Dormammu reward them with supernatural abilities?"
