Chapter 118: Chapter 118: Divine Target – Strike at Dawn
Time crept forward relentlessly. Outside the palace walls, the war raged with deafening intensity – machine guns roared, bestial howls pierced the night sky, while infernos consumed the city block by block. Skyscrapers groaned before collapsing in thunderous avalanches of concrete and steel.
Yet inside the throne room, Jason and the serpent sat facing each other in eerie tranquility, waiting out the long hours like chess masters contemplating their final moves.
Jason felt it the instant the first sliver of sun crested the eastern horizon. That familiar surge of absolute power flooded back into every fiber of his being. The invincible him had returned!
The great serpent noticed the shift instantly, his expression hardening with sudden realization.
In that heartbeat, an invisible domain exploded outward with Jason at its epicenter, its intensity multiplying at an astonishing rate!
The moment Jörmungandr found himself caught within the field, his staff froze mid-motion. Enormous green energy erupted from his form in desperate defense.
What shocked him most was how rapidly the domain was strengthening. The mystical energy surrounding him dissolved like snow under scorching sun.
His first instinct was to retreat immediately.
But what horrified him even more was that despite rocketing from the palace at impossible speed and flashing through the dawn sky, he couldn't escape Jason's relentless pursuit!
He caught a glimpse of it – a string of silver-white electricity that materialized directly in his path!
In that crystal-clear moment, he could see a blood-red sphere slowly forming around his pursuer. The sphere's diameter measured barely a few hundred meters, yet those scant meters represented an inescapable prison!
The truth struck like lightning: This being's true power is overwhelming. He's been toying with me this entire time! This is the ultimate contempt of predator for target!
Fury consumed him. No more games!
In an instant, brilliant green light blazed within the serpent's eyes. His form exploded into that of a colossal emerald beast. A sinuous serpentine tail, razor-sharp talons protruding from his chest, massive wings spreading from his back, and a nightmarish head atop an endless neck – the true form of Jörmungandr revealed itself in all its terrifying glory!
Two shimmering portals manifested beside him, and the final two hammers of his arsenal teleported into existence. Simultaneously, countless "sky beasts" identical to him but fraction of his size materialized across the floating island. Like a plague of locusts, they descended upon New York in a living avalanche!
After orchestrating this apocalyptic assault, he released an earth-shattering roar. His monstrous head, all fangs and fury, lunged toward Jason at the center of the domain!
Unfortunately for the serpent, Jason had transcended ordinary limitations. Even without calling upon his domain's power, his velocity approached thousands – no, tens of thousands – of times the speed of sound. Enhanced by the domain, his speed became truly incomprehensible.
He effortlessly shifted behind the serpent and delivered a devastating punch!
"BOOM!"
Explosive force rippled through space itself, manifesting as gale-force winds that spread devastation in all directions. Yet despite the earth-shattering impact, Jason failed to pierce the serpent's defenses. Jörmungandr's scales proved incredibly resilient.
The serpent's tail whipped toward Jason like a living steel cable, and when that attack missed, it attempted to ensnare him in its python-like grip. Simultaneously, the great serpent demonstrated remarkable flexibility by stretching its endless neck to bite at its own tail – creating a living ouroboros of destruction!
Under this relentless assault, Jason marveled at the creature's incredible agility. He could feel the raw power emanating from Jörmungandr, and the system helpfully confirmed what he already suspected: this enemy ranked above [King] tier – a true [God-tier] adversary!
Defeating him would yield extraordinary rewards!
While entangled in this deadly dance, Jason sent a pre-arranged signal skyward.
Far in Asgard, Heimdall instantly reported, "My King, the moment approaches!"
Odin nodded grimly. "Begin!"
Above Earth, a column of divine light pierced the dawn sky, touching down in the heart of ravaged New York.
The first figure to emerge was none other than the God-King Odin himself. Astride his eight-legged steed Sleipnir, he hovered in the crimson-tinged air. With his single all-seeing eye, he took aim with Gungnir, the Spear of Destiny, and hurled it with earth-shattering force!
"BZZZZT!"
Gungnir nearly tore reality apart as it streaked toward the giant serpent.
Mid-roar, the creature sensed the incoming projectile.
Gungnir struck true, impaling one of Jörmungandr's massive wings!
Blood rained from the sky as half a wing tumbled to earth below. Agony and rage intermingled in the serpent's howl: "ODIN, YOU TREACHEROUS BASTARD!"
The God-King retrieved Gungnir with casual expertise, his eight-legged mount carrying him toward the battlefield with majestic purpose.
"Jörmungandr! You who would devour the World Tree itself! You stand as the greatest threat to the Nine Realms! As sovereign ruler of all realms and God-King of Asgard, I shall end your existence and preserve balance throughout creation!"
Jason couldn't suppress a knowing smirk. Odin's righteous declaration rang with perfect political reasoning. One of the key requirements for leadership: knowing when to be properly ruthless.
Once Odin joined the fray, Jason could focus on his preferred tactics. He utilized his supernatural speed to harry the serpent from the front while Odin sought openings from behind. Each time he spotted vulnerability, the God-King would strike with precision, leaving Jörmungandr's backside increasingly tattered.
Jason seized the perfect opportunity when the serpent twisted to face Odin. He unleashed his domain's full power, freezing the beast's massive head for a crucial heartbeat. With Mjolnir radiating divine electricity, he summoned down three thousand thunderbolts.
Moving like a phantom, he perched upon the monster's forehead and brought the hammer down with everything he possessed!
"BOOOOM!"
Cataclysmic energy detonated instantly. Even Odin retreated several hundred meters from the shockwave. Thanks to his domain's protective abilities, Jason merely stepped back a dozen paces.
The serpent's eyes widened in final recognition before glazing over. Its massive form plummeted from the sky.
"CRASH!"
Jörmungandr's colossal body slammed into the earth with apocalyptic force. Blood fountained from its serpentine head as lifeless eyes stared hatefully at Odin, the spark of existence finally extinguished.
The system confirmed what Jason already knew: Jörmungandr had truly perished.
Both he and Odin descended to stand before the fallen beast.
Despite vanquishing his ancient enemy, Odin's face showed no triumph. Instead, something resembling... melancholy flickered in his expression. Perhaps he remembered simpler days, before their brotherhood shattered. Maybe memories surfaced of companions long dead, of golden ages lost to time itself.
Or perhaps, seeing the Hammer Lords' defeat, he contemplated his own mortality. That carefree youth racing beneath sunset skies would never return.
Jason wondered: would Odin and Jörmungandr find reconciliation in Valhalla's halls?
With practiced efficiency, Jason retrieved Loki and Thor from the Absolute Zero Dimension, depositing them at the God-King's feet.
Odin studied Jason with complex emotions before speaking. "You once expressed interest in becoming my son-in-law, did you not?"
Jason blinked in genuine confusion, his brow furrowing deeply. "Did I ever say such a thing? No way, old man. Your memory's playing tricks on you!"
Odin's expression turned ice-cold immediately. "Would you dare deceive the gods of Asgard?"
Jason scratched his head thoughtfully. Perhaps he had mentioned something of the sort, but that was ancient history now. How times change! At his current peak power tier, matching Odin himself, being someone's son-in-law was beneath consideration.
Some opportunities, once squandered, vanish forever. Even Odin seemed to grasp this truth.
Besides, even if Hela were younger, her age remained a significant obstacle. While people said marrying an older woman brought financial fortune, how many centuries – or millennia – separated Hela from him? Three hundred years? Three thousand?
Talk about a generation gap!
"Ha ha! I must have been joking around, but you took it seriously, God-King!"
Odin's piercing gaze bore into him for several tense moments. His face darkened ominously before he turned to depart.
What a temperamental old codger.
"God-King! If you're truly desperate to marry off your daughter to me, perhaps we could negotiate. What about throwing in Asgard as dowry?"
"CRASH!"
The Rainbow Bridge erupted from the heavens. Odin strode purposefully toward its light without looking back.
Jason shrugged philosophically. No risk, no reward.
Throughout the city, the last beast soldiers fell to Avengers' coordinated efforts. A crimson sun climbed the eastern sky, radiating newfound hope.
Surveying the smoke-shrouded ruins that once stood as Manhattan's proudest towers, Jason sighed deeply. "Congratulations to all surviving New Yorkers – you've lived through yet another apocalypse!"
A thought struck him, bringing an amused grin. Maybe we should convert them all to Buddhism. After enduring 81 tribulations, they might achieve enlightenment!
