Chapter 116: Chapter 116: Saving New York, Knocking on the Door of the Snake at Night
Jason remained silent for a long moment before speaking. "I just watched you unleash that mental shockwave on Steve. What happens when you use it on regular people?"
The Professor's voice dropped to almost a whisper. "Their soul... completely dissipates."
"Can the alloy bunker walls block your mental shockwaves?"
"..."
Professor X said nothing, but his shocked expression told Jason everything. Nightcrawler standing nearby froze like a statue, suddenly realizing he should have teleported away moments ago. Too late now.
Jason shrugged casually. "Don't think I'm giving you orders here. You can totally pretend I'm just thinking out loud. This is only a choice to consider. You know, I once said that a hero isn't someone who performs heroic acts their entire life. Heroes are forged in a few critical moments when they make the right choice."
He paused, letting the weight of his words sink in. "We're running out of time. Hell, every minute that passes makes this world more dangerous. Some choices might not be technically just, but history could call them great. Doing what ordinary people can't even imagine might bring worldwide condemnation, but only a select few will understand the true greatness behind it."
Professor X remained silent for what felt like an eternity.
"What I'm doing isn't about proving I'm some hero or showing how noble I am. I'm simply... saving the world!"
Jason raised three fingers toward the darkening sky. "I bear witness to this moment!"
The Professor closed his eyes, wrestling with his conscience for what seemed like forever. Then suddenly, a massive psychic shockwave erupted from the ground beneath them!
Moments later, Black Widow Natasha burst from the basement entrance, her eyes blazing with fury as she glared at Jason and Charles. "Murderers! How dare you call yourselves heroes?"
Jason glanced at the Professor, whose expression had turned gray with guilt, and snorted dismissively. "You servants of the serpent were planning to launch nuclear missiles to end the world! Thank God Professor X stopped you in time. President Freeman must have been tortured into giving you those launch codes. We're here to avenge him!"
Natasha, now transformed into a Hammer Lord, roared, "You lying bastards!"
She immediately attacked, swinging her sledgehammer with murderous intent. Nightcrawler's quick thinking saved the moment as he teleported the Professor to safety behind cover. Jason drew Mjolnir from nowhere, meeting her charge with a real duel of thunder gods.
After several dozen explosive exchanges, the outcome became clear. Though the serpent's Sky Hammer couldn't quite match Mjolnir's power, the difference wasn't overwhelming.
Seizing a perfect opening mid-clash, Jason's hand shot out and gripped Natasha's sledgehammer. She sensed the danger immediately, trying desperately to yank it back, but Jason's grip was ironclad. The system responded in an instant, extracting the divine power in a blinding flash!
Natasha's enormous power vanished like morning dew under the sun. Her body felt hollowed out, her legs turning to jelly as she crumpled to the ground. Sweat beaded across her pale face, her red hair hanging limply around her shoulders.
When Jason crouched before her, her trembling lips barely managed to ask, "What... what have I done?"
Jason's voice gentled with unexpected compassion. "You were manipulated by Nick Fury, Mephisto, and the serpent Jörmungandr. None of this is your fault – they're the real villains here. Get some rest now, you'll feel better when you wake up."
With those words, he placed her in the Absolute Zero Dimension.
Meanwhile, Professor X had systematically eliminated all remaining serpent forces in the compound. With both the President and Vice President now dead in the basement, America suddenly found itself without executive leadership. The Speaker of the House technically held the next position of authority, but nobody knew his whereabouts in this chaos.
After coordinating with the Pentagon, Jason and Charles suspended all radio and television broadcasts under military authority.
Rather than rushing immediately back to New York after the Washington battle, they decided to wait for the Avengers returning from Paris, gathering full strength before facing the great serpent terrorizing their home city.
It bore mentioning that Phoenix, Hulk, Storm, and the others had fought tooth and nail against the Gray Gargoyle in his Hammer Lord form, eventually emerging victorious. Tragically, the petrified victims remained frozen as stone statues. Tens of thousands had perished in Paris during this catastrophe.
Tokyo still suffered under two rampaging Hammer Lords, but Jason and the Avengers lacked the resources to help. He could only send silent prayers to the Japanese people from deep within his heart.
Shortly afterward, a Blackbird fighter pierced through the night sky and landed amid the White House ruins. The returning team gasped audibly at the devastation spread before them. Jason immediately located the sledgehammer they'd recovered, touched it once, and absorbed its power with a thought.
Now he had consumed six of the eight sacred hammers. His Thunder Body had evolved to an entirely new tier. The transformation was unmistakable – he could finally achieve full lightning form. This ability would prove invaluable for combat, travel, or emergency escapes.
But next came their greatest challenge yet: the final boss battle against Jörmungandr himself. In the comic, defeating the serpent required a full Avengers team equipped with Asgardian artifacts, culminating in Thor's heroic sacrifice.
Thanks to Jason's early intervention, the serpent's fear-spreading campaign had largely failed. Though it had drawn considerable power from the devastation in Tokyo and Paris, its main investment in New York had yielded poor returns. New Yorkers, battle-hardened by countless invasions and disasters, laughed in death's face.
"We've seen it all before!" they'd shout defiantly. "You think we're not ready for this? Death comes for everyone eventually. Anyone too scared to face it doesn't belong in New York!"
Flying high above the burning city, Jason and his team spotted the enormous floating island. Every few moments, beast soldiers rained down like falling dumplings, creating a spectacle far more dramatic than the Chitauri invasion.
On street tier, police, National Guard, and Army units had established defensive positions throughout the city. They engaged enemies at key intersections and strategic locations, but human weapons proved pitifully inadequate against the serpent's beasts. No sooner would they establish a position than hordes of monsters would overwhelm them, crushing resistance with terrifying efficiency.
The great serpent showed no urgency about mass killing – neither did his soldiers. They behaved like predatory cats toying with helpless mice, methodically extracting despair and terror to strengthen their master. New York had become an inferno of collapsing buildings and toppling skyscrapers.
Jason checked his watch aboard the aircraft – barely midnight. Six or seven hours remained until sunrise. They faced either a grueling prolonged battle or somehow relocating the fight to the opposite side of Earth where dawn had already broken.
Unfortunately, Jason knew nothing about manipulating the serpent's location. Perhaps using Thor and Loki as bait? But that risked Odin's wrath once he discovered their captivity.
Worth considering as a last resort, Jason decided privately.
He projected a holographic map of New York, assigning combat zones to each team member.
"Listen up, everyone! The fate of New York rests in our hands! This is the greatest disaster in modern history – even our President fell in battle! But we are the Avengers! We fight for our fallen President, for our citizens, for our home!"
The cargo door hissed open, and warriors leaped into the night one by one. Finally, Jason himself dove into action.
Unlike the others targeting street tier, he soared directly toward the floating island, approaching the colossal palace gates that loomed like mountains against the darkness.
"BOOM!" His fist hammered against the massive doors.
"Anybody home?"
