Chapter 54: Chapter 54: A Being That Transcends Time.
"Eye of Agamotto?" Kurogai fell silent, weighing the pros and cons.
The Eye of Agamotto was a familiar name, yet it was even better known as the Time Stone. The Ancient One intended to use the power of the Time Stone to glimpse a clearer, more precise future.
Still, Kurogai hesitated. Fully revealing one's future to another was a serious matter, and he carefully considered the risks.
The Ancient One understood his concerns and did not press him, allowing Kurogai to decide on his own.
"Ancient One, no matter what you see, if you do not speak of it or interfere, I will agree."
After a moment, Kurogai lifted his head and met the Ancient One's gaze calmly. He trusted her, but he needed her promise: regardless of what she saw, she would neither reveal it nor interfere in what was to come. Only then would he consent.
"I understand. By the Great Eternal, I swear I will neither reveal nor act upon what I see today. Should I break this oath, may the Great Eternal cast me into eternal darkness."
The Ancient One respected Kurogai's wishes and made this solemn promise. She had no intention of spreading what she learned, only a deep curiosity about his future, something they shared.
"Then let us begin." Kurogai nodded. With her vow secured, he felt at ease.
Moments later, the Ancient One produced a necklace adorned with the symbol of a sorcerer's tilted well. At its center glowed the Time Stone.
"It begins."
She spoke solemnly and began casting her spell. As the seals lifted, the Eye of Agamotto slowly opened, emitting its characteristic green light—the unmistakable glow of the Time Stone. At the same moment, Kurogai felt a sudden stirring deep within his body.
He frowned, sensing this was not a reaction from his Ultimate Eye but something deeper. Despite the discomfort, he kept his composure; the future was what mattered most.
The Time Stone floated between them, radiating a faint glow, creating an eerie sense of time slowly flowing. The Ancient One used the Stone to forge a strange connection with Kurogai, peering into his future.
Time was like a thick fog—intangible and unseen. Her task was to part its layers. The light from the Time Stone grew clearer, and the Ancient One neared a vision beyond the mist.
Suddenly, all the fog parted, revealing a magnificent figure with a commanding back, like a deity standing between heaven and earth.
The figure sensed her presence and slowly turned.
The Ancient One felt a gaze devoid of all emotion, utterly cold and impassive, like a true god looking down on mortals.
With that single glance, she felt a crushing blow, and a mouthful of fresh blood spilled forth. The connection forged through the Time Stone to Kurogai snapped abruptly.
"Ancient One, what happened?" Kurogai asked, alarmed as she spat blood and faltered. He caught her immediately, his expression grave. Clearly, what she had seen was terrifying.
After a moment, the Ancient One steadied herself, though her face remained pale. The glimpse had clearly taken a toll.
"I'm fine, I just need time to recover."
She reassured Kurogai. The gaze had not intentionally harmed her, only severed the attempt to peer beyond time. Otherwise, she would not be able to speak.
"Ancient One, what did you see? Why were you injured so badly?"
Now relieved she was not seriously harmed, Kurogai's curiosity deepened. What could have inflicted such damage?
"I saw that magnificent back, and... an overwhelmingly terrifying gaze."
The Ancient One said, her voice pale and eyes shadowed with lingering fear. She could not imagine what kind of being possessed such a gaze. One look was enough to sever the flow of time and block her sight.
"One gaze?"
Kurogai was baffled. Could a single look cause such injury and prevent her from seeing the future? It seemed almost unbelievable.
"It is difficult to imagine, but it is so. That gaze cut the river of time, stopping me from seeing what lies ahead."
The Ancient One smiled bitterly, her gaze grave as she regarded Kurogai.
Remember, the future she saw was his—so the figure she glimpsed must be him.
In other words, the owner of that gaze was Kurogai himself.
A future Kurogai who had transcended time, sensing her intrusion and severing her connection with a single glance.
It was a horrifying thought.
In that moment, the Ancient One realized Kurogai's refusal to become Sorcerer Supreme was wise.
He was like a young dragon not yet fully grown. When the winds and clouds rose, he would become a mighty force that could shake the world. Perhaps Kamar-Taj was truly too small to contain someone like him.
