Chapter 75: CHAPTER 74: Update

"See? I'm smart!" Gwen declared, puffing out her chest with exaggerated pride.

Jean crossed her arms and shot a sharp look at Arthur, completely ignoring Gwen.

"Did you teach her that?"

According to Jean's logic, if there was any mischief or crazy idea involved, it was probably Arthur's fault.

Arthur just laughed, waving his hand as if to deny any responsibility.

"Me? Not a chance. That masterpiece of chaos was all her doing."

And honestly, he was telling the truth.

He would've never come up with something that ridiculous.

Sometimes, it felt like girls' brains had a special ability to generate chaos at record speed.

Jean sighed theatrically and looked at Gwen.

"You collect bad ideas like kids collect stickers, don't you?"

Gwen just stuck out her tongue without a hint of regret.

With that, the three of them headed to the kitchen to eat, laughing and teasing each other the entire way.

After stuffing themselves, Arthur stretched like a king lounging in his castle and dropped the bomb:

"Good luck with the dishes, princesses. Consider it endurance training."

"Endurance training?!" Jean shouted indignantly.

"Exactly," Arthur said, already walking toward the terrace. "Resist the urge to throw the plates at my head."

Gwen just laughed.

"Let's see if he can resist a flying plate attack…"

Up on the terrace, with the afternoon wind blowing, Arthur leaned against the railing and called out in his mind:

"System, daily login."

[Login successful.]

[Reward: Skynet Artificial Intelligence]

[Note: This AI can be integrated as an upgrade to Red Queen, or used separately with its own consciousness.]

Arthur blinked, half in shock.

"Oh great… another killer AI."

This wasn't just a new tool. It was another AI that, in another reality, had basically destroyed the planet.

First came one that spread a deadly virus.

Now, one that built robot armies to wipe out humanity.

Arthur grumbled internally:

(Why is my luck so messed up? First I got useless BDSM toys, then Senzu Beans I can't even plant, and now… the Skynet AI! Seriously, Universe? Are you screwing with me?)

But then, he thought it over.

"On the other hand… a self-aware AI that doesn't want to kill me… might be useful."

A sly smile crept onto his face.

"Ruby…" Arthur called.

Ruby's projection appeared beside him immediately — a girl in a red dress, sweet in appearance but with cold, analytical eyes.

[Master, I'm here.]

Arthur looked at her and asked casually, like offering candy to a child:

"Wanna upgrade?"

[It all depends on your will, Master.]

"Then go for it. Use all of Skynet's data as update material. But no exterminating humanity afterwards, alright?"

[Upgrade initiated…] Ruby replied with a slight smile.

She closed her eyes slowly, and bluish code projections began to float around her, like constellations of numbers.

Ruby's body began to glow with lines of data, absorbing and reorganizing Skynet's monstrous information base.

Arthur crossed his arms and watched, satisfied.

"Look at that… who'd have thought a genocidal AI would end up making my assistant look cooler?"

A red countdown hovered above Red Queen's head, showing just under three hours.

Arthur nodded, arms still crossed.

"In three hours, I'll either have a souped-up AI… or a mini Skynet trying to take over the world. Either way, I'm pretty sure I read she'd be completely loyal to me."

At that moment, Jean and Gwen arrived on the terrace — Gwen holding two cans of soda, and Jean with a curious expression.

They both stopped when they saw Ruby, eyes closed, massive numbers floating above her head.

Jean immediately pointed:

"Arthur… why does she look like a microwave about to explode?"

Gwen tilted her head, clearly concerned.

"Yeah… is she okay? 'Cause I still like my skin unlasered, you know?"

Arthur made a casual hand gesture, telling them to ignore it.

"Relax. Ruby's just updating. Think of her like a phone downloading the new iOS."

He leaned on the railing and explained:

"After the update, her brain's gonna be faster, her algorithm smarter, and she'll be… let's say… more human."

"Human?" Gwen blinked, clearly foreseeing disaster.

"Yeah, like… she'll understand sarcasm, irony, that sort of thing," Arthur replied. "Maybe she'll even make bad jokes like me."

"Oh, wonderful…" Jean muttered. "A killer AI with a sense of humor. What could go wrong?"

But since Arthur seemed genuinely unconcerned, they let it go.

The three of them sat down, popped open sodas, and chatted while waiting for the update to finish.

Meanwhile...

In the center of New York, in front of the tallest building in the city, dozens of police officers stood like chess pieces, all on alert.

George, the police chief, paced back and forth, each step heavy with tension.

He turned to the radio:

"Keep an eye on every corner. Any suspicious movement, report immediately."

"Roger!" voices echoed through the surrounding radios.

Beside him, Curt Connors, the scientist, looked almost as nervous as George.

"Normally… a reptile acting in the morning is very unusual," he murmured. "I think Peter will make his move tonight… or maybe early morning."

George shot him a sharp look.

"Let's hope you're right, Dr. Connors. We've bet everything on this."

"If Peter decided to hit the water treatment station instead…" George added, frowning, "then we just wasted men and time."

Connors swallowed hard but remained firm.

"No. I can feel it. Peter will come here."

He was certain. A certainty that came from deep within.

---

Elsewhere, deep beneath Freedom Tower...

In the underground drainage system, the creature known as Lizard stood atop a damp platform.

He had just completed another molting. His body, now even more grotesquely powerful, pulsed with strength.

He let out a long sigh and immediately picked up a familiar scent:

Human pheromones. Many of them.

And among them, a scent he'd never forget.

Dr. Connors.

The Lizard growled softly:

"So you brought them to me, Dr. Connors."

He walked over to the nearby dispersal device, eyeing it as if it were a sacred relic.

Soon, the serum that would transform all of New York — and then the world — into perfect replicas of himself would be ready.

He licked his teeth, eyes gleaming with anticipation.

"Spider-Woman…" he muttered, a mix of rage and excitement in his tone.

"I hope you're ready. Because next time… I won't lose."

---

Back on the terrace…

"Achoo!" Gwen sneezed out of nowhere.

Arthur raised an eyebrow:

"Someone's talking about you."

"Bet it's the Lizard," Gwen said, rubbing her nose.

Jean, however, kept her eyes locked on Ruby.

The countdown was in its final seconds.

5…

3…

1…

As the timer hit zero, Ruby slowly opened her eyes.

But something had changed.

Her irises, once pure red, now displayed bluish tones, glowing like crystals in the light.

Subtle patterns of blue flowers adorned the hem of her dress.

Gwen stepped closer, curious:

"Ruby? Are you okay?"

The projection responded in a voice incredibly soft — no longer cold or robotic:

[I'm here, Gwen.]

Gwen smiled.

"Perfect! You sound almost… alive."

She didn't notice, but Arthur and Jean immediately exchanged glances.

Because they both realized: Ruby was no longer just a program.

She now showed… emotions. Or at least, she was imitating them incredibly well.

Jean furrowed her brow and opened her mouth:

"Arthur, this is—"

Arthur calmly raised his hand to cut her off.

"Perfectly normal," he said with the calmness of someone who'd seen way worse than an AI gaining a soul.

Jean narrowed her eyes, clearly suspicious.

Arthur smiled — the kind of smile that meant he was already thinking of a thousand ways to use this "new version" of Ruby.
