Chapter 25: Chapter 25: Crossbones
Meanwhile, in another office, the former S.H.I.E.L.D. Chief, Alexander Pierce, was now staring gloomily at the monitor in front of him. The screen showed Kyle swaggering into the Triskelion.
"What the hell is Nick Fury doing?!" Pierce muttered irritably. Despite mentoring Nick Fury, Pierce had never fully understood his mentee's motives.
However, Pierce still believed he had control over everything within S.H.I.E.L.D, even though he no longer held a formal position. He continued to receive mission reports from all high-level agents and had learned about Kyle's abilities from one such report filed by Phil Coulson.
A person with supernatural abilities like force field control, who could easily overpower S.H.I.E.L.D.'s ace agent Black Widow, was someone HYDRA would naturally be interested in. Pierce himself was intrigued and wanted Kyle on his side.
Directly contacting Kyle was not an option; Nick Fury must have already tried and failed. Since direct persuasion didn't work, coercion seemed the only viable strategy. According to the intelligence he had gathered, Kyle had close ties with his adopted siblings. Capturing them might force Kyle to comply. Pierce had successfully used similar tactics many times before.
To execute such a task, he couldn't use S.H.I.E.L.D agents directly, as Fury would notice. Instead, he activated a sleeper agent in New York.
But now, mere hours after issuing his orders, Kyle had shown up at S.H.I.E.L.D headquarters. Coincidence? Or something more?
Feeling a surge of anxiety, Pierce picked up his phone and dialed a number. No one answered. He glanced back at the monitor, an ominous feeling creeping over him. Did the mission fail? Had secrets been exposed?
Pierce doubted his agent had the nerve to divulge secrets; HYDRA controlled his family. If he failed, only he would die. If he betrayed HYDRA, his entire family would perish.
Deciding to take no chances, Pierce pressed a communication button on his desk.
"Director, what's the matter?" a voice answered.
"Brock Rumlow, there's an intruder in S.H.I.E.L.D. Lead your team to capture him. Be aware, the intruder has supernatural abilities, including force field control."
After a pause, Pierce added, "He's very important to us. Capture him alive."
Killing Kyle had never been an option for Pierce. He wanted to understand how Kyle gained his abilities. If they could be replicated, HYDRA's dream of world domination could become a reality.
"Yes, Chief," Brock Rumlow, also known as Crossbones, replied. He was HYDRA's ace within S.H.I.E.L.D. Pierce trusted Rumlow to handle the mission efficiently.
"Hail HYDRA," Pierce whispered.
"Hail HYDRA," Rumlow responded.
Meanwhile, in his office, Nick Fury looked solemn, his single eye full of determination. After instructing Maria Hill to inform Pierce about Kyle's intrusion, Fury began monitoring him. Officially, only agents with higher authority could monitor lower-level agents. Both Fury and Pierce were level 10 agents, making it impossible for them to monitor each other through official channels.
However, Fury had secretly enhanced his authority, allowing him to do more than a typical level 10 agent. This included eavesdropping on Pierce. Fury had never expected to use this against his mentor, but now he was glad he had.
Upon hearing Pierce shout "Hail HYDRA," Fury was stunned. The former director of S.H.I.E.L.D was a HYDRA agent? The revelation was as shocking as discovering that mice and cats were close relatives.
"Motherf**ker!!" Fury growled repeatedly, his disbelief palpable.
The intel about Pierce being HYDRA was crucial, but Fury's immediate concern was the extent of HYDRA's infiltration in S.H.I.E.L.D. If Pierce was HYDRA, how many others were?
...
The Triskelion was vast and its layout complex. Kyle had never been there before. The compass he carried could only point him towards Pierce, not provide a detailed route.
After wandering around for a while without success, Kyle grew frustrated and considered using his psychokinesis to break through the walls directly to Pierce's location.
Suddenly, his danger sense alerted him. He ducked just as several bullets, resembling nails, shot towards him from all directions.
