Marvel: Evolutionary Emperor

Chapter 12: Chapter 11: Secrets Beneath the Canopy

The Following Dawn

I wake to the scent of smoke and roasting tubers—Suri's new breakfast recipe, apparently. It's a crisp morning, the jungle air cool enough to make me pull on my leather vest before stepping out. My muscles feel a shade tighter, denser; another night of passive evolution ticking me up a notch. I stretch, testing the burn—no strain, just power humming through my limbs like a live wire.

Suri bounds over, holding out a half-mashed fruit cake on a wooden platter. "Kael, you try first," she says in her charming voice. I bite into it—sweet with a hint of bitterness. Definitely an acquired taste, but I appreciate the effort.

"Not bad," I tell her, wiping crumbs off my chin. "Fuel for the future."

Her grin is all crooked teeth and bright eyes. "Emperor eat."

Zyanna strides in, robes swishing, satchel of herbs slung over her shoulder. Behind her, Mako and Rina stand ready, spears at the ready. I gather by the central fire, tribe members filtering in.

"There's something in the old riverbed," Zyanna announces. "A hidden cave—rumors of Deviant relics and dark wards. I want a small team to scout it."

I catch her eye. "Relics usually mean trouble. But you know I can handle it." My smile is easy but tense—anticipation sparking in my gut.

She nods. "You, Suri, Mako, and Rina. Go quietly, avoid the main Deviant patrols, and bring back anything of value."

I tap my chest where golden veins pulse faintly. "Let's move."

We head out just after sunrise, slipping through ferns and mangroves. Even without magic, my senses feel amplified—each bird call, each drip of dew registers. Twenty feet ahead, the river's rocky banks dip into shadow. I can smell stale blood and moss cake. That tells me Deviants have camped here recently.

Suri crouches beside me. "Smell like fire and iron." She wrinkles her nose. "Bad."

I nod. "Keep your spear ready. They're not just scavengers—some of them worship old gods down here."

We find the cave mouth low behind a tangled curtain of vines. The air inside is cool, stale, tinged with rot. I hold my blade aloft—obsidian edge catching slivers of light. The others fan out behind me.

No sooner do we step inside than a guttural growl echoes off the walls. Torchlight reveals ragged Deviant scouts, bone clubs raised. One steps forward—a lean female with twisted horns and a leering grin.

I roll my shoulders. "Y'all really should pick more original entrance music."

She snarls and charges.

I brace—heavy armor plating building under my skin even before impact. The Deviant's club slams into my forearm like a wet noodle against steel; its momentum staggers her instead of me. I twist, grab her wrist, and use her bodyweight to fling her into the cave wall. She crumples in a heap.

Mako and Rina spring forward, dispatching two more scouts. Suri's spear glows faintly where she's woven a quick ward—it burns a ritual symbol into the Deviant's arm, stunning it.

I wave them back. "Gotta be quieter."

We press deeper, the narrow tunnel branching into a chamber packed with relics—cracked masks, chipped statues of horned beasts, and at the center, a battered obsidian altar. Runes etched across its surface pulse in the same golden hue as my veins. I crouch to inspect them.

These are the same glyphs I felt on the Guardian Beast and the obelisk—ancient Magic of Time. My heart hammers. If someone's hoarding these relics, they're tapping into the same field that links past and future. Dangerous stuff.

Suri gently picks up a small statuette. "What this do?"

I reach out, touching one of the runes. A jolt of knowledge cracks through me—short glimpses of a man in iron armor, a woman in red flames, battles on a floating platform in space. I jerk back, heart racing.

"Nothing," I lie, clamping down on the flood of canon echoes. "Better leave it."

As I step away, the cave trembles—rocks dislodged by distant seismic activity. A massive boulder peels loose, barreling toward Suri and Rina. Time slows in my mind. I feel the surge: adrenal blast and evolutionary impulse colliding.

Without thinking, I vault forward, catching the boulder's edge with my shoulder. My bones shift, densify under my leveled-up durability—no crack, no pain, just a rumble through my core. I push it aside, sending it smashing against the cavern wall in a cascade of dust.

Suri stares. "Kael, you okay?"

I shake off fine rubble. "Yeah. Reactive evolution—always got my back." My voice is steady, but inside my brain is humming with potential. Next time, I think, I'll spark a new defense mode.

We gather around the altar. The biggest prize is a dagger inset with a shard of the same pulsating stone I've encountered before. It feels warm to the touch, alive. I slide it into my belt.

"With this," I murmur, "we can bind those other runes tighter—or understand them."

Zyanna will know what to do.

We retrace our steps, moving faster now. The jungle light is dimming as we emerge. The tribe welcomes us back with quiet curiosity. I lay the dagger before Zyanna, her eyes widening.

"These runes," she breathes, "they resonate with something deeper. You must guard it carefully."

I nod, scanning the dusky treeline. My body still buzzes with passive upgrades from the cave's magic. Even sitting here, I know I'm stronger than this morning—every breath in that chamber spiked my evolution.

I step into the campfire's glow. "Mission success," I announce lightly. "Now someone feed me something that isn't dinosaur tubers."

Laughter ripples through the camp. Suri sidles up, grinning bashfully. "Next time, Emperor ask for berry stew."

I ruffle her hair. "Deal. But you make it less like hot sauce."
