Chapter 156: Chapter 156 : Hydra Mr. Fantastic?
Pierce's mood now was like the warm spring sunshine—comfortable and bright.
He sat in the spacious office, gazing out the window. Though darkness obscured the view, everything seemed strangely harmonious and beautiful to him.
His thoughts drifted to his confrontation with Alex Ray, and an inexplicable wave of gratitude swelled inside.
Since Alex Ray appeared in his life, Pierce felt everything had shifted. Step by step, he had climbed toward the peak of his career, power, and status—everything now within his control.
He knew very well that all this success was closely tied to Alex Ray.
Looking back, Nick Fury had always been a thorn in Pierce's side.
He'd remained vigilant against Fury, fearing his interference would ruin his plans.
But ever since Fury focused his attention on dealing with Alex Ray, Pierce found his own power growing steadily.
Without Fury's interference, S.H.I.E.L.D. gradually became Pierce's domain.
Now, S.H.I.E.L.D. was entirely under his control.
He could wield his authority at will and pursue his ambitions freely.
All thanks to Alex Ray.
Pierce couldn't help but feel deeply moved. He truly didn't want to kill Alex Ray.
Another person Pierce owed gratitude to was Bucky Barnes—the Winter Soldier. Just one Hydra operative had ignited a war between the Avengers and Hell's Kitchen.
Bucky's actions contributed significantly to Hydra's revival, and Pierce now felt compelled to honor him.
"But then again, Bucky has a grave somewhere," Pierce thought, shaking his head. "Looks like Tony Stark took care of his body. Doesn't matter anymore."
Bucky was already gone; his death didn't affect Pierce.
Still, Alex Ray's threat could not be ignored.
Pierce's expression darkened with worry. How was he going to handle this problem?
Just then, Reed Richards—Mr. Fantastic—sitting opposite Pierce, noticed the distress.
He smiled confidently and cryptically, saying softly, "Director Pierce, still worried about Alex Ray's threat?"
Pierce met Reed's deep gaze, sensing the man had a plan hidden beneath that smile.
He waited silently, eager to hear what Reed intended.
But Reed was in no rush to explain. He muttered, almost to himself, "Don't worry, Director. I already have a plan. Leave it to me. I'll make both Nick Fury and Alex Ray vanish before your eyes."
Pierce frowned slightly. He disliked others making decisions behind his back.
But Reed Richards was a valuable ally; despite his reservations, Pierce wouldn't show his displeasure.
After all, they were still in the early stages of their alliance.
Just as Pierce was about to ask for details, the door abruptly opened, startling him.
Crossbones entered, his eyes widening at the scene before him.
He glanced first at Pierce, then at Reed, frowning involuntarily.
Crossbones had earned great achievements under Pierce's leadership. He considered himself Pierce's most capable assistant—the one he trusted most.
Now, seeing Pierce in a secret meeting with an unfamiliar figure like Mr. Fantastic, Crossbones felt an uneasy threat—as if his position was being challenged.
"Seems I'm no longer Pierce's most trusted," a complex mixture of loss and resentment surged in Crossbones's heart.
He felt ignored, and that feeling was deeply uncomfortable.
So, he turned to leave quietly, unwilling to interrupt the conversation.
But Pierce's voice stopped him, sharp with displeasure: "Wait. What's going on?"
Pierce's tone was brusque—he was discussing important matters with Reed and didn't want distractions.
Yet, he also recognized Crossbones was his right-hand man, and his work mattered.
Crossbones paused and faced Pierce.
He hesitated briefly, then said, "Director, I have news to report."
His voice carried a hint of dissatisfaction. He didn't want to interrupt, but the news was too important to withhold.
"Spit it out. Don't you see I'm talking with Mr. Fantastic?" Pierce's impatience was clear.
He didn't care about Crossbones's feelings—only the news mattered.
Crossbones's dissatisfaction deepened at Pierce's tone.
He had worked hard but still felt overshadowed by the newcomer.
He had originally wanted to share good news but now hesitated.
Yet, he forced himself to say, "I found Nick Fury's location."
Pierce's eyes lit up with shock—and then ecstasy.
He'd been searching for Fury for a long time, eager to settle old scores.
Now that the location was known, he could barely contain his excitement.
"Take me there immediately!" Pierce demanded.
He could wait no longer—he wanted to see Fury die with his own eyes.
Reed Richards also heard the news and urged Crossbones to lead them quickly.
He was curious to meet the legendary Nick Fury in person.
Pierce strode ahead, a dark gleam in his eyes.
He glanced at Reed, thinking, Who's really in charge here? Reed seemed ambitious, unwilling to play second fiddle. Is he preparing to betray me?
He felt unease and distrust toward Reed's presence.
But he hid it, silently following Reed toward Fury's location.
. . . . . . .
Meanwhile, in a secret S.H.I.E.L.D. room, Nick Fury watched surveillance footage—the death of his close friend, a Skrull.
His loyal agent Coulson was also dead.
Coupled with the loss of Captain Marvel Carol Danvers,
Fury now clearly realized his plan had utterly failed.
He had lost his friends, his operatives, his heroes—his world crumbled in an instant.
Though ruthless and hardened, Fury felt the weight of so much loss deeply.
A determined gleam sparked in his eyes. He refused to fall.
He must rise and avenge his friends.
Taking a deep breath, he forced calm into his heart.
The top priority now was to escape—otherwise, Pierce would come for him.
He had identified the mole inside S.H.I.E.L.D., and remaining meant death.
"As long as I live, I will come back. Alex Ray, Pierce—just wait," Fury swore silently.
But the question remained: Could he still walk this path?
