Chapter 17: Tony's Cure, Fury's Offer, Adam's Agency Grows

The Stark Expo was over, the dust settling, and the world was once again safe, thanks in no small part to a certain eccentric PI and his equally eccentric team. Tony Stark, having found his father's secret and synthesized the new element, was back to his old, infuriatingly charming self, albeit with a newfound appreciation for life. Adam, watching the news reports, felt a sense of satisfaction. He'd helped. And he'd done it without breaking the timeline too much.

"Tony's back! And not just physically, but mentally. It's like he finally got his head out of his own… well, you know. Now maybe he'll stop trying to invent new ways to die and focus on, you know, being a superhero. Or at least, a less self-destructive billionaire."

His agency, meanwhile, was thriving. The subtle interventions at the Expo had gone unnoticed by the public, but the results were undeniable. They were building a reputation for handling the "unusual."

One afternoon, a discreet message arrived at Adam's office. An encrypted file, untraceable. It was from Nick Fury.

"Mr. Stiels," Fury's voice, gravelly and serious, filled the room. "We need to talk. About… your unique skill set. And the Avengers Initiative."

Adam leaned back in his squeaky chair, a slow smile spreading across his face. "The Avengers Initiative, huh? Took you long enough, Fury. I thought you'd never ask."

He knew this was coming. The post-credits scene from Iron Man 2, but expanded. Fury was trying to recruit Tony, but he was also clearly trying to figure out the mysterious "A.S." who kept popping up and causing controlled chaos.

"You've been… active, Mr. Stiels," Fury continued, a hint of frustration in his voice. "We've got reports of impossible events. Disappearing objects, phantom figures, technology malfunctioning in… unusual ways. And it all seems to follow your general vicinity."

"Coincidence, Director," Adam said smoothly. "I just happen to be very good at my job. And sometimes, my job involves a little… flair. You know, for dramatic effect."

"Dramatic effect that saved lives at the Expo," Fury countered. "Dramatic effect that helped contain the Abomination. Dramatic effect that… made my coffee turn into Jell-O."

Adam chuckled. "Ah, so you finally figured that one out. Took you long enough. I was starting to think S.H.I.E.L.D.'s intelligence division needed a new coffee machine."

"We want to know what you are, Mr. Stiels," Fury pressed. "And what you can do. And if you're a threat."

"Threat? Me?" Adam feigned shock. "Director, I'm a private investigator. I find lost cats, I expose corporate malfeasance, and occasionally, I save the world. Usually with a well-timed illusion or a strategically placed banana peel. I'm practically a public service."

"We're offering you a position, Mr. Stiels," Fury said, ignoring the sarcasm. "A consultant. For the Avengers Initiative. We need people with… unique talents. People who can operate outside the box."

"Oh, Fury. You're so predictable. But in a good way. The 'consultant' offer. The classic S.H.I.E.L.D. recruitment pitch. I'm almost touched. Almost."

"A consultant, huh?" Adam mused. "Does it come with a cool codename? Because 'The Loophole-Exploiting, Pop-Culture Maven, Mercenary Avenger' is a bit of a mouthful for a business card."

Fury sighed. "We can discuss codenames later. Are you in?"

Adam paused. He knew the answer. He was here to influence, to change. And what better way than from the inside? But not fully. He was still Adam Stiels, independent operator.

"I'm in, Director," Adam said, a mischievous glint in his eye. "On my terms. I'm a consultant, not an employee. I pick my cases. I work with my team. And I reserve the right to make your life a living hell with perfectly timed pranks. Deal?"

A long silence. Then, Fury's voice, laced with reluctant acceptance. "Deal, Mr. Stiels. Welcome to the Initiative. Don't make me regret this."

"Oh, you will, Director," Adam promised, a wide grin on his face. "You absolutely will. But you'll also be glad you did."

He hung up, a triumphant laugh escaping him. He called Jemma and Skye into his office.

"Team," Adam announced, a flourish in his voice. "We just landed our biggest client yet. S.H.I.E.L.D. And we're officially consultants for something called 'The Avengers Initiative.' Get ready, because things are about to get even weirder."

Jemma's eyes lit up. "S.H.I.E.L.D.? The Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division? Adam, this is incredible! Think of the resources! The data! The scientific breakthroughs we could achieve!"

Skye whistled. "S.H.I.E.L.D., huh? So, we're officially fighting aliens and supervillains now? Awesome! Do they have good Wi-Fi?"

Adam chuckled. "Probably not. But we'll fix that. Our agency just got a major upgrade. And this, my friends, is just the beginning."
