Chapter 64 - II
It was nighttime.
Preparations for the fifth attack were in full swing, but the Feng family navy was obviously feeling war-weary.
As the Feng family navy, they had never felt so frustrated before. They were poised to attack, but they retreated at the most critical moment every time.
If Tan Chuyan hadn’t held the royal order in his hand, they would have simply given up.
Tan Chuyan was different from the past, when he wore plain clothes like snow. Today, he donned bright silver armor, with a red cloak fluttering behind him.
He stood on the shore, holding the soft sword that he always carried around his waist, and raised his arms, saying: “Soldiers, I understand that you no longer want to fight, but tonight is different from before.” Hearing this, everyone looked towards Tan Chuyan.
“Our objective tonight is to eliminate Cui Yuanqing’s garrison on the edge of the Lingjiang River,” Tan Chuyan declared loudly, “and then reclaim the Jing Kingdom in one swift stroke!”
The soldiers clearly doubted this, and Feng Lijing, the deputy general from the Feng family, scoffed: “It’s merely a fool’s dream. Even if we defeat the defenders, how could we reclaim the Jing Kingdom?”
“I said it can be reclaimed, so it can be reclaimed,” Tan Chuyan replied, turning to Feng Lijing. “General Feng, do you doubt me, or the Feng family army?”
“You…” Feng Lijing turned angrily and retorted, “I’m not as articulate as you, so let’s stick to the facts.”
“Okay!” Tan Chuyan said loudly, agreeing, then stepped onto the boat with Feng Chilie and gave the order: “Let’s go!”
Five warships emerged from the water, and fifteen cargo ships were once again drawn from the most turbulent area. But today was different; these fifteen cargo ships would not return after docking.
Tan Chuyan stood on the bow of the ship, facing the wind, shielding the soldiers.
After standing for a while, he looked in the direction of the Jing Kingdom and asked Feng Chilie beside him, “Are Ji Bei and Jiang Che ready?”
“Ready,” Feng Chilie nodded. “As soon as the Lingjiang Guards’ granary lights up, they will attack Jing Kingdom’s capital in one swift strike.”
“Yeah,” Tan Chuyan said, looking at Feng Chilie curiously. “By the way, it’s been so long and you still haven’t told me. Where is the Wolf Eagle Cavalry hidden?”
“I’ll tell you when we get back to Jing Kingdom,” Feng Chilie said, taking Tan Chuyan’s hand and kissing it. “But I have one more surprise for you.”
Tan Chuyan replied, “As long as it’s not too shocking.”
“Don’t worry, it won’t be,” Feng Chilie assured him, then glanced at the guard’s watchtower. “We’re almost there, prepare to take action.”
“Assist me,” Tan Chuyan said, clasping his hand. “I have little strength.”
“Really?” Feng Chilie chuckled, picking up a bow and arrow and handing it to him. “Why are you so strong when you scratch me? The marks won’t go away for three days.”
Tan Chuyan couldn’t help but blush. After a while, he playfully struck Feng Chilie on the waist with his bow, scolding, “It was not fierce.”
“Oh,” Feng Chilie chuckled, picking up the arrow for Tan Chuyan once more. “Then I’ll be gentler next time.” He placed the arrow on his bow, adding, “But you must hold back the tears, or else I might lose control.”
Some things could be restrained, while others could not.
Tan Chuyan glared at Feng Chilie. “Get out! You’re so annoying!”
Feng Lijing, standing far away, couldn’t hear their conversation clearly due to the distance. But judging from their expressions, it seemed unrelated to the war.
Feng Lijing couldn’t help but roll her eyes.
Just as she did, Tan Chuyan’s voice rang out.
“General Feng,” Tan Chuyan called loudly. “Prepare everyone. Let’s launch the fire arrow towards the northeast.”
Over the past five days, Feng Chilie had sent people to locate the guard army’s granary in the northeast.
As long as their ship sailed close enough, they could use the fire arrow to set the guard’s granary on fire.
Of course, achieving 100% success required Feng Chilie’s expertise, as only he could guarantee such a result.
They were fortunate to have Feng Chilie, making this method highly effective, and even Feng Lijing couldn’t object.
She agreed to discuss the plan with Tan Chuyan and promptly turned around to make arrangements.
.
They halted about fifty meters from the shore. Before Tuoba Rou’s guards could detect them, they had already set up their bows and arrows in advance.
Tan Chuyan stood at the forefront, gripping the arrow’s tail with his hand and slowly drawing the bow. As he neared the limit, Feng Chilie clasped his hand, adding a bit more tension to the bowstring.
Soldiers approached to help them light the oilcloth tied to the bow. Tan Chuyan turned around and kissed Feng Chilie, murmuring between their lips, “Bless me.”
Feng Chilie softly bit Tan Chuyan’s lips, their breaths mingling. “Trust me, nothing will happen.”
“Whoosh!”
As Feng Chilie’s words trailed off, the arrow shot into the sky, leaving behind a brilliant streak like a shooting star. Then a cascade of red stars illuminated the entire night sky.
“Ah Lie,” Tan Chuyan released his bow, turning to face Feng Chilie. He looked up at him and brushed their lips together. “Kiss me.”
Feng Chilie’s throat tightened, and he kissed Tan Chuyan fervently amidst the flames of war. The entire night sky gleamed because of them, outshining even the stars.
