Chapter 9: Chapter 9: The School
Yin Jixue went to find Mr. Zhong Shang and Mr. Nan. They lived in the most inconspicuous part of the palace, their small courtyard featuring a stone table and a chessboard.
To her surprise, the two scholars were very easy to talk to—she didn't even need the prepared speech she had planned.
"We've been living in the palace for so long, and we're quite intrigued by the school concept Your Majesty described."
The discussion went smoothly, and by the time Yin Jixue left, she was already planning the school's location.
The school was built quickly, thanks to the materials provided by the system and the lack of oil-based paints in this era. After just a few days of airing out, it was ready for students.
The location was close to the palace, ensuring maximum safety for the children.
The school consisted of five single-story buildings, a courtyard, and a main gate. The gate was designed as a wooden fence, allowing parents to see their children playing inside.
To make the place more inviting, Yin Jixue brought in a palace artist skilled in painting. She had him decorate both the inner and outer walls with adorable chibi-style characters, animals, and plants.
The artist, Qing He, had never seen cement walls or modern paint before, but he quickly realized that the smooth surface was perfect for painting. The special pigments provided by the Queen didn't fade, even in the rain—something he had never encountered before in the Demon Realm.
Seeing his enthusiasm, Qing He volunteered to stay at the school and paint murals for the classrooms. Yin Jixue was more than happy to accept.
The school had three teachers:
Mr. Zhong Shang – Taught literacy and classical literature.Mr. Nan – Managed school affairs and assisted with teaching. Qing He – Served as the art teacher.
The first batch of students ranged from ages three to fifteen. Later, when food was no longer a major concern, Yin Jixue planned to set up literacy classes for adults as well.
At the moment, all school expenses are covered by Yin Jixue, and students receive free lunches.
Black Dragon City had no private schools or proper books. Fortunately, one thing Yin Jixue didn't lack was books—her dowry included crates full of them.
She loaned her collection to the school. The two scholars would hand-copy the books and return the originals to her later.
Yin Jixue herself wasn't idle either. She rewrote and adapted famous classical literature and fairy tales from her past life into storybooks for the children. These became their first extracurricular reading materials.
Since all the children started at the same level, there was no need for separate classes. The youngest student was three years old, while the oldest was fourteen, but they all began by learning basic literacy.
Despite the Demon Realm's poverty, its children had a natural advantage over human kids—they were physically strong from birth.
Newborn demon children could run and jump immediately, though they couldn't speak right away. However, they understood adult speech and could express their needs, like hunger or needing to relieve themselves.
Initially, Yin Jixue wanted to set the minimum school age at seven, but Feng Xiu reminded her that seven-year-olds were already old enough to hunt in the forest.
It was Monday, the first day of school.
Many parents personally brought their children, eager to see what this "school" thing was all about.
Most demons weren't familiar with the concept of weeks, so Yin Jixue introduced them to a seven-day cycle.
She explained:
One week has seven days.Children would attend school for five days and rest for two.The first day of school was called "Monday" (周一), and the last school day was "Friday" (周五).
The simple naming system made it easy to remember, and some parents even scribbled the new timekeeping method on their walls using charcoal.
Lian Rui and Lian Ze arrived together, carrying the new schoolbags that Yin Jixue had secretly ordered the palace maids to sew for them.
Some of the other children immediately noticed.
"I want one too!" One child tugged at his parents, eyes glued to Lian Rui's bag.
Seeing this, Lian Ze clutched his bag tightly, afraid it would get taken. Lian Rui just giggled and patted his head.
Yin Jixue herself attended the opening day, wearing an elegant outfit with a semi-formal hairstyle styled by Feng Xiu.
As the highest-ranking person in Black Dragon City, she was also the first-ever principal of its first elementary school—so it was only right that she made an appearance.
Though the school was small, it carried the hopes of the entire city.
Upon seeing her, the gathered parents and teachers quickly bowed in respect.
"Your Majesty!"
Yin Jixue, accustomed to such formal occasions from her years as a princess, remained composed.
Lifting her sleeve slightly, she spoke in a clear, gentle voice:
"There's no need for such formalities. I'm only here to see how the children are doing."
She had inspected the school after construction finished and was quite satisfied.
With the right materials, even a simple schoolhouse could look dignified.
