Chapter 1492: Helping Out ( 2 )
Now finally able to meet Yi Jiao in person, Wei Zhiying bowed to her and said, "Third sister-in-law, I apologize to you for what my parents said and did before. I hope you can forgive them."
While Yi Jiao liked to hold grudges, she also had a broad mind. As long as the other party apologized, she didn't mind letting the matter go.
No matter how she warned her husband, deep down, she knew that as long as the children shared the Chen family's blood, they couldn't cut off this relationship.
Therefore, after seeing how sincere Wei Zhiying was when apologizing, she felt embarrassed and quickly pulled her up.
She glared at her and said, "Eldest sister-in-law, not only are you older than me, you are also my eldest sister-in-law. How can you bow to me? If people didn't know, they would think I'm arrogant and bullied you."
Hearing this, Wei Zhiying smiled and replied, "It's my fault for not considering this matter."
Waving her hands, Yi Jiao said, "Alright, since you have apologized, let's not talk about this matter anymore. In the future, I believe we will understand each other better after we interact more."
Wu Yahui knew that her third sister-in-law was someone with a sharp mouth but a soft heart. So, she chuckled and said, "Now that it's only the three of us as the family's elders, we should get closer. This way, even when our family no longer shares one household, we won't be estranged in the future."
"Yahui is right. No matter what arguments you have, you are still one family," one of the women chimed in.
With them adding a few words, the awkward atmosphere finally went away and they started to chat with familiarity. As they went to the kitchen, Yi Jiao asked, "Eldest sister-in-law, can you cook?"
Wei Zhiying let out a long sigh and said with embarrassment, "Third sister-in-law, to be honest with you, I can only boil water."
When everyone heard this, they were taken aback. For villagers, the most important skill they had to learn was how to cook and take care of the house. The next important thing was how to farm and teach the children.
So when they heard that she could only boil water, they looked at her as if she were a rare species.
After a moment of silence, Yi Jiao asked again, "Eldest sister-in-law, if you can't cook, what will your family eat in the future?"
Hearing this, Wei Zhiying shook her head and replied, "I will try my best to learn how to cook. My family doesn't have much money left, so it's impossible for us to keep buying food from the state-owned restaurant."
When they heard her words, everyone took a sharp breath. They all knew how expensive the dishes sold at the restaurant were. Unless it was a special celebration, no one was willing to spend money there.
Not to mention that the food was overpriced, the taste couldn't compare to Lu Jueyu's cooking. Rather than wasting money at the restaurant, most preferred asking Lu Jueyu for help.
"Sister Wei, since you live near Lu Jueyu's house, why don't you ask her to teach you some simple dishes?" one of the women suggested.
"Sister-in-law, I'm still new here and don't know many people yet. It would be too impolite to ask something like that from someone I have only met once," Wei Zhiying replied.
After she said this, everyone realized that not everyone was willing to share their cooking skills. But remembering how generous Lu Jueyu had been during the wedding banquet, teaching others some of her recipes, they believed she wouldn't mind helping.
"My son Jianmin is learning to cook from Jueyu. How about I ask him to teach you some simple dishes?" Wu Yahui offered.
Everyone had heard of Dong Li and Chen Jianmin's skills at the last banquet. Since they were personally taught by Lu Jueyu, their cooking was better than the chefs at the state-owned restaurant. So, everyone nodded in agreement.
"This… wouldn't that be inappropriate?" Wei Zhiying hesitated.
"I heard that Sister Lu's recipes are rare and precious. Since she taught them to Jianmin, it would be rude of me to learn them without her permission," she added.
Everyone's impression of her improved at that moment. Not many people could resist the temptation of gaining such valuable knowledge.
After a moment of thought, Wu Yahui said, "Then how about I ask Jianmin to get her permission first? If Sister Lu agrees, you can learn from my son. If not, I can teach you a few simple dishes myself."
Wei Zhiying weighed the pros and cons before finally saying, "Second sister-in-law, I really appreciate your good intentions. But let's not trouble Jianmin. It's better if I learn from you. After all, we are family."
Hearing her words, Wu Yahui and Yi Jiao were both taken aback. They had expected her to choose Jianmin, especially since those recipes were so valuable. If she managed to learn them, she might even be able to get a job as a cook in town.
Realizing that she didn't want to put Jianmin in a difficult position, Wu Yahui didn't insist and simply nodded as she said, "Alright then."
"Thank you, Second sister-in-law," Wei Zhiying said gratefully.
Yi Jiao checked the sky and said, "Alright, it's getting late. We should start working, or we won't finish cooking before noon."
Hearing this, everyone stopped chatting and got to work. They started by lighting the stove and boiling water for everyone to drink. Since the men were doing heavy labor, they would need to stay hydrated.
After boiling several pots of water, they poured them into the water vat to cool. At the same time, they began kneading dough for steamed buns.
Before starting, Yi Jiao asked, "Eldest sister-in-law, where do you store your flour?"
While chopping vegetables for the filling, Wei Zhiying replied, "It's stored in the jars under the kitchen table."
Yi Jiao nodded and opened the jar lids one by one. The moment she saw the flour and grains inside, her eyes widened in surprise and she asked, "Eldest sister-in-law, where did you buy this flour and these grains? They are of such good quality!"
