Chapter 5: Chapter 5
The whole family gathered at the hospital with their dear patient whose condition was still slowly improving. He actually got to know all the family members. He got to know his father and mother, and first he got to know his wife Huda and his son Omar, and after them his son Hadi and his daughter Toka, who used to go to him occasionally to catch up on their studies, as their exams had already started. Mahmoud had checked on them from his wife Huda, who used to go to work in the morning and return home to prepare food for everyone.
She would check on Hadi and Toka, encourage them to study, and ask them to make their father proud of them and happy with their work after he returns home. Then she would head to the hospital where her husband and other son Omar were waiting for their wonderful food, as Huda was a first-class cook. When Mahmoud woke up two days after being admitted to his room in the orthopedics department and started talking a little, Huda went to him, hugged him and said:
- Thank God you are safe, Mahmoud.
He smiled at her and said in a tired voice:
- Thank God.
Before he could finish his words, she interrupted him wondering:
- Who was that Amira you were calling while you were in the intensive care unit?!
He looked at her in surprise, saying:
- I don't know. I don't understand your question.
Omar laughed at her question and told her that his father had lost consciousness and perhaps his memory, so he didn't realize what he was saying and that he doesn't even remember it now.
Najat was looking at her son lying in his sickbed and crying as if she didn't like to see him in this condition. Which mother would like to see her only son, or even someone other than him, in such a state? Ali, Mahmoud's father, noticed his wife and wanted to comfort her, so he said:
- Calm down, Najat. It's neither the time nor the place. Your son is fine and well, thank God. We thank God for his grace and care for us. He has decreed everything for the best.
- Thank God, uncle. Huda replied before she went to her mother-in-law to calm her down. She hugged her, comforted her, patted her shoulder and back, and wiped her tears until she calmed down. Mahmoud struggled and gathered what remained of his strength and looked at his mother with compassion and pity until he was able with difficulty to say:
- Thank God, mom, I'm better now. Don't worry and pray for me.
- I'm praying for you, my dear. May God save you and bring you back home safely.
- Yes, my son. Calm her down for the sake of her health... because sadness is not good for someone of our age.
- May evil be far from you, grandpa. May God bless you with a long life.
- May God bless you, my dear, and give us a long life so we can rejoice in you and your children soon, God willing.
- I'm ready, but Dad should get better soon and may God make it easy.
Huda looked at her son, Omar, with a mixture of surprise and suspicion, as if she wanted to scold him for not telling her about that before. It seemed that Omar had something he had to tell his mother about, but he didn't, and the consequences of this would be dire for him, but not now and not here. Meanwhile, Toka did not miss this dangerous statement from her elder brother, so she said cheerfully and maliciously:
- Yes, Omar, may God make it easy for you, bro. It seems you have a new story to tell me.
Here their mother, Huda, interfered angrily and said:
- Okay, that's enough for you. Come on, Hadi, take Toka and go because you're studying and taking your exams, and I'm staying with your father for some time, don't worry about him.
- You should not have spoken up, Toqa. Mom noticed us and now we have to go home.
Hadi and Taka asked their father's permission and said goodbye before they went home after their mothers insistence.
The session in Mahmoud's room at the hospital was a beautiful family one until Lieutenant Hazem came. He asked permission to enter and checked on Mahmoud's condition. They told him that he was fine and in a better condition, so he asked them to leave them together to get some answers from him to continue the investigation, so they left them alone. Hazem was alone with Mahmoud for the first time since he took over this case, and he started preparing to ask him questions. He looked at him with a sly, lurking smile that Mahmoud didn't understand, but he smiled back anyway, so Hazem took the initiative and said:
- I will try to keep the questions short so as not to bother you or tire you out with too many questions. - Thank you. How can I help you?
- Try to help me and take it easy a little so we can finish our work early and not tire you out too much and leave you with your family who are waiting outside... Okay?
- Okay.
Hazem smiled at him again then called his clerk Hamed saying:
- Come in, Hamed, Hamed is the one who will record your statements, don't worry.
- Okay.
- Where did the money that Shady took go?
Mahmoud was surprised by Hazem's question and his explicit accusation as if he was Shady's partner. Involuntarily, Mahmoud's fingers moved as if to denounce his question or accusation, but he pretended to be calm and steady, and said to him mockingly, not caring:
- Arrest him and ask him, he will definitely tell you, I... I don't know any information about the money or about that Shady.
- What did you do at Ammar Mahgoub's company before the accident?!
- I was... trying to find out how the inspection committee of my bank approved this loan.
