LOVE PROMISES

Chapter 10: Chapter 9: Stand For Yizheng

After leaving the laboratory, Fen still felt a heavy weight on her chest. The secret she now held was more dangerous than any weapon she had ever seen. Unit 731 was not just a dark story from the past—they still existed, and this time they were ready to unleash unimaginable destruction.

Fen had to reveal this truth to the world, but there was one major problem: where could she hide from an organization so ruthless that it now saw her as a threat? Yet he also had to return to the Yizheng Health Station to help the people there. This was going to be a complicated challenge for Fen.

Their truck sped through narrow streets filled with the ruins of former battlegrounds. Chen, sitting next to her, sighed heavily. "If we reach headquarters and deliver this evidence, do you think anyone will believe us?" Chen asked, his tone bitter. Fen knew he was right. They were up against a powerful force, an organization that had infiltrated every level of government. However, Fen also knew that silence was the worse option because it would be the act of a coward.

That night, after hiding in an old warehouse on the city outskirts, Fen sat in a dimly lit corner, lost in thought. In silence, she opened the documents handed to her by the commander earlier. Black-and-white photos, horrifying medical reports, and complex diagrams showing the terrible experiments conducted on humans. She even found a photo of Han, taken before his condition drastically changed. The man who had once been so lively now looked nothing more than a tormented victim.

Just as pain started creeping into her heart, the warehouse door creaked open. Fen and Chen immediately grabbed their weapons, ready to face whoever might have followed them. But standing there was a young woman dressed simply, her gaze filled with secrets.

“I’m Yui,” she said calmly, raising both hands in a sign of peace. “I have information that might just save you.”

Fen and Chen exchanged glances, uncertain. But there was something in Yui’s eyes that made Fen trust her, if only for the moment.

“You know about Unit 731?” Fen asked, her voice low but firm.

Yui nodded. “I know more than that and you will shock,” she replied quietly. “For years, they have been conducting experiments in various locations. Not just Nanjing or Harbin. There’s a secret network throughout the region concealing their activities. They plan to develop biological weapons to dominate Asia.”

Fen clenched his fists. The secret was darker than she had imagined. With Yui’s information, they now knew that Unit 731 was not only creating biological weapons but also planning to spread them to control other civilizations.

“If you truly want to stop them,” Yui continued, “you’ll have to find their final secret location. There’s a data center there documenting all their experiments to date. Only with that evidence will the world believe.”

Fen stared at the map Yui had just handed over, showing a hidden location near the Manchurian border. In the tense silence, she realized that this was the moment to take the most dangerous step of her life.

But before they departed, Fen looked at Han body, who lay weak and gravely injured in the back of the truck. Pain, hatred, and determination had now merged within him. "I promise," Fen said, gripping Han’s cold hand, "no matter what, I will end this. We will get justice for you, Han. The world will know the truth."

Their journey to the hidden stronghold began in silence, with Fen’s heart filled with anger and sorrow. This time, she wasn’t just fighting soldiers or conventional weapons. She was challenging hidden demons in human form, and Fen was determined to end this nightmare once and for all.

“Fen, we can’t take this step. This is too far; this is a task for the military. I think we’ve learned enough.” Chen, who had begun to waver, tried to hold Fen back from making a rash decision.

Fen remained silent. “Fen, there are still many people who need help. If we act recklessly, it could destroy our nation.”

“You’re right; it’s not my place to get involved deeply. Then go ahead and inform the commander about this,” Fen said, with Chen nodding in agreement.

Returning to the Yizheng health station felt like entering a different world for Fen. The morning sun shining on the station’s roof made her momentarily forget the darkness of the secret he carried. However, the image of Unit 731 and Han’s now-weak body never truly left her. Fen knew that if she genuinely wanted to save the people here, she couldn’t hold the truth alone.

Inside the station, doctors and nurses were already busy treating the ever-growing number of victims. Their weary and helpless faces struck Fen with a deep sense of guilt. Every day, they risked their lives to save others, unaware that an even greater threat was looming.

The next night, as Fen sat alone in the station ward, her thoughts drifted to everything that had happened. Amid the darkness she had witnessed, one thing kept her going: her resolve to save the people around her. The Yizheng station had now become the last place where she felt he had a measure of control, a place where everyone depended on his dedication as a medical officer.

Chen came in carrying a small envelope and placed it on Fen’s desk. “A message from headquarters. They seem to want us to stay at the station and guard the line here. They’re planning further action.”

Fen sighed in relief. She realized how vital the Yizheng station was as both a shelter and a health fortress for the locals. Fen knew that by keeping the station safe, they could help many people.

But the work at the station wasn’t always easy. Each day, he faced tired faces, people wounded or sick from

the ongoing attacks. Many were innocent civilians, families who had lost their homes, children who had lost their parents, and the elderly who were separated from their families.

In between his routine tasks, Fen often went out to help treat patients directly, sometimes under dim lights that were barely functioning. One day, a young boy with a minor wound arrived, his face wet with tears. Fen gently comforted him, bandaging his wound while listening to his story of searching for a family he had yet to find.

That boy, who called himself Xiaoming, became one of the regular patients at the station. Each time he came, Fen would take a moment to talk to him and offer words of encouragement. Slowly, Xiaoming’s smile began to return, bringing a glimmer of hope in the darkness of wartime.

One evening, Fen felt a hand on her shoulder. When she turned, she saw Chen looking at her with a serious expression. “Fen, there’s one more thing,” he said, handing over a slip of paper. “Headquarters has signaled a warning. It seems there’s significant enemy movement in the southern region. We have to prepare; they may be heading this way.”

Upon hearing this news, Fen knew his time at the station would not last. Everyone had to brace for the unexpected. The next morning, Fen gathered the entire station team and began organizing a strategy to strengthen the line of defense. Nurses and doctors prepared supplies and equipment, while a few young volunteers were trained to assist in emergencies.

That night, the wind blew harder, and the air around them felt tense. Inside the station, people began to pray and hope for safety. Fen stood in the doorway, gazing into the darkness outside. This time, she wasn’t only fighting as a doctor but also as someone who would protect the last refuge for those in need.

In her deep heart, Fen promised that no matter what happened, the Yizheng station would stand—a small oasis in an endless war. And though she didn’t know what tomorrow would bring, she would continue fighting, step by step, with those who believed in her.
