Love After Apocalypse

Chapter 5: Dying Man

After hearing BeepAI explanation, he didn't even know which to choose—but one thing was certain, that man was definitely going to die.

In truth, from the very beginning, there shouldn't have been a choice at all—anyone would have chosen to save the woman because she still had a chance to survive.

Also, BeepAI gave him the option of who to save, perhaps because there was a conflict of emotions in Rull's heart.

But suddenly, Rin was shocked—her brother suddenly got up and pulled her hand, moving her behind him. It was as if her brother had no intention of helping them at all.

"Brother…? Why are we leaving them…?"

He just kept his damn mouth shut, as if he never had any intention of helping them in the first place.

Rin still couldn't accept what felt like heartlessness from her brother. She tried to break free from his grip, wanting to help the couple.

But Rull held her hand tightly and pulled her back into the house. She kept struggling…

"Bootherrr!!! That hurts!!"

Without realizing it, Rull had gripped his sister's hand too tightly—and then let it go.

After her hand was released, she immediately dashed toward the couple.

She spoke to them, shook their bodies, tried to pull them—but nothing worked. She was still too small… But even so, she kept trying and never gave up. Rull just stood there, watching his little sister.

Beep… Beep…

Master, are you sure you don't want to help them? Your sister… she's starting to cry.

"It depends on that man—if he still wants to keep her alive. I'll never risk someone's life just to prolong another person's suffering."

But… wouldn't it be better? More people means it's easier to rebuild civilization…

"I used to think that too. But look at that woman. Just from her hair—you can tell, it was recently cut, right?"

BeepAI scanned the woman's hair and noticed the uneven, frayed ends.

Beep… Beep…

So what does her hair have to do with anything, Master?

"That woman has already given up on life—or in human terms, 'whatever happens, happens.' She's ready to die."

I understand, Master. Thank you for teaching me something new. But… why is that man still trying to save her if she has already given up?

"Love and responsibility... Even I would do the same. Now that he's failed, the decision is in his hands. If he's willing to let her go, I'll try to save her and take care of her."

Understood, Master.

---

The man lying on the ground was at the edge of death, his coughing worsening. Yet, he still held the unconscious, shivering woman in his arms.

"Hang in there, uncle… I'll try to save you," Rin said as she struggled to pull them both.

Rull, who had been watching coldly, finally couldn't bear seeing his sister cry while struggling alone. He gave up his stubbornness and walked over.

"Back off now… go back inside the house. I'll try to save them. Stop crying, okay?"

She let go of the couple's hands and immediately hugged her brother, sobbing loudly.

"Ye… I'm sorry, alright? Stop crying. Go inside first—I promise I'll do my best to save them."

Still crying, she went into the house without resisting, not even once.

From her point of view, she knew—when her brother made a promise to her, he would never break it.

After Rin went into the house, Rull sat in front of the couple, quietly watching the moonlight.

"Hey old man, I know you can still talk. Let's get straight to the point—I can save the woman you're holding… is she your wife, girlfriend, or daugh—nah, she's about the same age as you, right?"

Despite his pain, the man finally spoke, voice rough and trembling.

"She's my wife… isn't she pretty?" he said, gently turning his wife's face toward Rull.

"Not bad… you've got good taste. But still, my little sister is the prettiest girl in the world right now."

He pointed his thumb toward the house door—where Rin was peeking through, watching silently.

Even though the man couldn't see her clearly, he knew exactly which little girl Rull meant.

"What a siscon, haha… I can't compare to your little sister… hah, the moon's beautiful tonight."

"Yeah—until someone ruined the moment by lying in front of us."

"Haha… sorry for crashing your date with your sister," he chuckled weakly, then slowly loosened his arms, letting go of his unconscious wife.

"You can have her… starting today, I leave my wife in your hands."

"Why not just die together? You don't even know if I'm a good person or not. Plus, I don't wanna deal with her crying when she watches her husband die."

"Don't worry. She's stronger than you think. And she'll be useful to you. I failed as a man to protect her. Yet here you are—a younger guy with just a kid—surviving better than us."

He coughed hard, then met Rull's eyes with resolve.

"Whether you're a good man or not—I don't care. Just don't let her die."

In front of Rull's eyes, he watched as the man coughed uncontrollably—like he was just moments away from death. The man gently held his wife's face and kissed her one last time.

"I'm feeling sleepy now… so I'm going to rest for a bit. Hey, you—take good care of her, alright? I'm lending her to you in this world… but when I'm reborn, I'll come back to win her back."

Those were his final words. Rull simply nodded. The man smiled… and finally, he drifted into eternal sleep.

Beep… Beep…

Master, his heart has stopped. He has already left this world.

Rull said nothing. He quietly picked up the woman, carried her inside, and laid her gently in the living room. He wrapped her in a blanket and ensured the room stayed warm and cozy.

Then, he went back outside and lifted the man's body, carrying him behind the house.

"Dig a grave—seven feet deep."

Beep… Beep…

Understood, Master.

The ground behind the house began to shake as soil and rocks floated into the air, forming a deep pit.

Without another word, the man's body gently floated down into the grave, as if carried by invisible hands. Once inside, the earth closed over him on its own.

Small stones floated into place, merging together to form a headstone inscribed with:
