Lord of Deception

Chapter 70: Chapter 70 - The Chains of the Empire

The air inside the Empress's private chamber was thick with tension, a battlefield where words carried as much weight as swords. Kael stood by the window, gazing out at the imperial courtyard below, where nobles and officials moved like pawns on a board they barely understood. Behind him, Empress Selene lounged on a silk-covered chaise, a goblet of wine resting lightly between her fingers.

"You've made quite the impression," she said, swirling the crimson liquid. "Half the court fears you. The other half wants to use you. And the Emperor…" Her lips curved into a knowing smirk. "Well, he's too blind to see the storm coming."

Kael turned slightly, his expression unreadable. "And you? Which half do you belong to?"

Selene chuckled, her golden hair shimmering in the dim candlelight. "I belong to no half, Kael. I exist outside their petty power struggles." She took a slow sip, eyes gleaming over the rim of her goblet. "As do you."

Kael crossed the room with measured steps, his gaze sharp. "Then why summon me here? What is it you truly want?"

Selene studied him for a long moment before setting her goblet aside. "I want to know if you can be reasoned with… or if you are the monster they whisper about."

Kael smirked. "And what do you believe?"

She rose gracefully, closing the distance between them. The scent of jasmine lingered around her, a subtle but deliberate choice. "I believe you are a man who understands power in ways my husband never will." Her fingers lightly traced the embroidered sleeve of his coat. "And I believe that if Lucius falls, the empire will need someone strong enough to hold it together."

Kael caught her wrist with effortless precision, stopping her touch before it became too familiar. "Careful, Empress. You're speaking treason."

Selene arched an eyebrow but made no move to pull away. "Treason?" she whispered. "Or inevitability?"

Kael released her, stepping back. "That depends on how soon the Emperor realizes you've already betrayed him."

Selene laughed softly, but there was an edge to it. "You're not as cautious as you pretend, Kael. You enjoy playing with fire."

Kael met her gaze, his eyes dark with intent. "Fire only burns those who don't know how to control it."

Selene studied him, her expression unreadable. Then, after a moment, she turned toward her desk, retrieving a sealed letter. "This arrived from the western provinces. The governor speaks of unrest, of whispers that a faction is forming… one that does not recognize Lucius as Emperor."

Kael took the letter, scanning the contents. His mind worked swiftly, piecing together the implications. "You suspect a rebellion."

"I suspect an opportunity," Selene corrected. "One that a man like you would know how to seize."

Kael set the letter down, his mind already three steps ahead. The empire was fracturing, and now, even the Empress was looking for a way out. This was no longer about mere survival—this was about shaping the future.

And Kael intended to be the one holding the reins.
