Chapter 72: Chapter 72: Pastries, Chess, and Trouble Brewing.
"Uh-oh." Ye Junlin stroked his chin thoughtfully. Since he was already nearby, he figured he might as well swing by Medicine King Valley. There were always benefits waiting to be snatched.
"Master, here's your herbal-flavored ice cream!" Bai Xiaoxi came running over on her tiny legs, excitement in her voice.
Ye Junlin took it, scooped a bite, and nodded in approval. "Hmm, not bad. You're improving."
"Hehe!" Bai Xiaoxi scratched her head, clearly pleased with herself.
"By the way, Master's got a task for you." Ye Junlin pulled out a thick book titled Comprehensive Pastry Making Guide—a bonus from one of his daily sign-ins. It was packed with all kinds of pastry recipes.
In his previous life, this thing could've built a baking empire.
"Try to pick up something useful from this. Not just for me, but for yourself too," he said, his tone unusually serious.
Bai Xiaoxi flipped the book open, her eyes sparkling at the vibrant illustrations of pastries. Just looking at them made her mouth water.
She could already imagine tasting each one. Truly, Master is the best!
"Get to work."
"Okay!"
With renewed energy, Bai Xiaoxi clutched the thick book to her chest and dashed off to the workstation, eager to bring the pages to life.
Watching this unfold, Hong Qianye looked absolutely stunned, his understanding of the world once again turned on its head.
This guy clearly wanted to eat those pastries himself… and he still found a way to twist it into a moral lesson?
And worst of all, that little mouse actually believed him!
As Bai Xiaoxi bustled around the kitchen, Hong Qianye—rarely one to feel pity—found himself reflecting on the girl's fate.
Here she was, a powerhouse in the Great Ascension realm with a rare constitution and a thousand loyal followers at her back. With that kind of setup, she could've claimed a piece of the Central Region and risen to power with ease.
Instead, she was here, happily playing the role of a pastry chef. Genuinely satisfied with serving others.
Just as he started to feel bad for her, Ye Junlin, now seated across from him, placed a chessboard on the table. "Alright, good disciple. Let's continue. If you lose again, there will be consequences."
Hong Qianye's fists clenched. The silver-haired youth's smile only added to his irritation.
You devil. If you want to torture me, just say it. Why use chess of all things?!
"What's wrong? Don't feel like sparring with me today?" Ye Junlin's smile took on an icy edge.
"Master, you must be joking," Hong Qianye forced a laugh, though his heart felt like it was sinking. "It's an honor to play chess with you!"
He had no choice. Even as resentment boiled inside him, he had to bottle it up.
And somehow, in that moment, he realized his own situation was even worse than that silly mouse's.
Off in the distance, Li Wujie was practicing the Chaotic Heavenly Sword Technique. When his gaze drifted toward the willow tree where the chess match was unfolding, a flash of envy passed through his eyes. He sighed softly. "Master's favorite will always be Senior Brother Hong."
---
Heavenly Spirit City.
With Medicine King Valley set to open in a few days, hordes of cultivators had poured into the city from every corner of the Eastern Domain.
Every inn and tavern was packed.
Just walking down the street, you'd bump into a Foundation Establishment cultivator every few steps and a Golden Core every ten. It was that dense.
Occasional scuffles broke out, but they were quickly squashed. There were simply too many hidden powerhouses around for anyone to be reckless.
---
Dragon Gate Inn.
The place buzzed with excitement and chatter.
Outside the inn, four hooded figures stood quietly, gazing at the signboard.
"Master, this is the largest inn within a hundred-mile radius," Li Wujie said respectfully. "We can rest here until Medicine King Valley officially opens."
The figure at the front stood tall and composed. Beneath his hood, thick silver hair framed a strikingly handsome face that radiated an otherworldly brilliance.
Ye Junlin gave a slight nod. "Alright, this one will do."
They could've stayed aboard the Kunpeng, but that would've gotten boring. A city inn had its own charm—local stories, gossip, and flavors to enjoy.
"Welcome, gentlemen! Please come in!" The waiter bowed and waved them inside.
Their hoods concealed their identities, so none of the other guests paid much attention.
The main reason for the disguises? It wasn't humility—it was crowd control. Ye Junlin's group was far too recognizable. Their appearance would've caused chaos otherwise.
"Master, why are we hiding again?" Hong Qianye finally worked up the nerve to ask.
From his point of view, with strength like theirs, they shouldn't care about anyone's opinion. If anyone dared whisper, they could be silenced—permanently.
Ye Junlin sighed, "With my current level of fame, we'll be mobbed the moment people recognize me. If word gets out, I'll have a queue of fanatics asking for autographs. Sounds like a nightmare, doesn't it?"
Hong Qianye stared at him, stunned. His eye twitched uncontrollably.
Of all the reasons he could've imagined, this wasn't one.
"I really need to stop using normal logic on this guy."
"I was wrong. So, so wrong."
He took a deep breath and mentally hit the reset button on everything he thought he knew.
---
Upstairs, Ye Junlin tapped his fingers lightly on the table. "Waiter, got any recommendations?"
The waiter quickly appeared, face beaming. "Sir, you came to the right place! Let me introduce a few of our signature dishes. They're all top-quality!"
He flipped open the menu and began, "Here's our braised lion's head. Made from a Nascent Soul Stage Howling Wind Lion, slow-roasted to perfection—crispy outside, juicy inside."
"And our sweet and sour carp—it's infused with trace amounts of true dragon blood. The taste is refreshing and full of spiritual essence!"
"Finally, our stir-fried beef. Taken from a Transformation Stage Azure Bull. One bite and you'll feel stronger than ever!"
As the waiter talked, he kept a close eye on Ye Junlin's expression. These dishes weren't cheap, and most cultivators balked at the prices. Usually, they'd skim the menu, wince, and leave.
But Ye Junlin? He looked completely unfazed.
After all, he'd attended the Great Zhou's imperial banquet, where even a plate of scrambled eggs cost a fortune. The eggs, of course, were sourced from a Golden-Winged Roc.
Compared to that, this menu was just mildly adventurous.
"How about this one? It looks yummy!" Bai Xiaoxi suddenly pointed at a dish named Snowflake Jade Meat, eyes wide with curiosity.
The waiter's smile widened. "Excellent taste, young lady! That dish is made from an Extreme Ice Mouse. Comes from the far north, lives in glaciers—its meat is incredibly tender and translucent, like snowflakes. Best served hot pot style."
Bai Xiaoxi: "!!!"
She'd been hungry before, but now she looked like she was going to faint.
A mouse?!
Tears welled up in her eyes.
"Would you like to order it?" the waiter asked cautiously.
"No! No, thank you!" Bai Xiaoxi shook her head violently, voice trembling as she pushed the menu away.
The waiter blinked, confused. Why such a dramatic reaction?
…Wait a second. Did he just see a tiny pair of furry ears?
