Chapter 200: Off Track (2)
Fast forward to thirty minutes later, and the shelter mission was finally over. After judging, the results were in.
Unsurprisingly, Team Red who had Jaehyun and Rina as member, took first place.
Their tent looked the cleanest and the sturdiest. The Production team tested it by putting multiple fans in front to see if it would shake, but it didn't.
The others were amused by it too.
"Honestly, we could live here," Rina boasted while the PD laughed off-camera.
Team Blue, despite their constant bickering, managed to throw something together that technically qualified as a shelter. However, they came in last.
On the other hand, the Yellow team came in second. The three-team man had an advantage. They were able to build a shelter. But it wasn't as pretty as the Red team. Still, it was standing and functional.
After a short break and a few interviews with the cast, the crew gathered again near the base location for the second challenge.
Mission 2: "What's for Lunch?"
A staff member rolled out a cart with a giant, colorful spinning wheel. On each colored section was a different type of food written in bold letters.
Tteokbokki, Jokbal, Jjajangmyeon, Kimchi Stew, Samgyeopsal, Cold Noodles, Spicy Ramyeon, Pizza, Hamburger, Steak.
"Each team will spin the wheel once," The PD who was off-camera explained to the cast. "Whatever food it lands on, your mission is to go out into the surrounding neighborhood and get a stranger to recommend that exact dish when you ask, 'What do you recommend for lunch today?'"
The cast groaned in unison.
"Sounds easy? It's not," the PD said from behind the camera. "And here's the twist—you can only ask one person at a time. If they say something else, you have to eat that food before you can try asking again."
"What?" Yura's eyes widened. "So, we need to keep eating and eating?"
"Exactly," the PD said.
"You have two hours," The PD continued, clapping his hands. "The first team to get the matching food answer wins."
Cameras started zoomed in as each team stepped forward to spin the wheel.
Team Yellow's spin: Samgyeopsal
Team Blue's spin: Kimchi Stew
Team Red's spin: Jjajangmyeon
All three teams were given envelopes with a meal voucher and a small microphone pack. They scattered in different directions with their cameramen, heading into nearby streets.
The Yellow team was the first one to set out. The three walked along a sidewalk near a row of small restaurants.
"I swear, everyone better be craving samgyeopsal lately," Sungbae muttered, rubbing his hands together to warm them up a little.
The camera followed them as Yura spotted a group of two college-aged girls standing by a bubble tea shop. She smiled and approached.
"Should we approach them?" she asked the two.
Yura glanced back at Minjae and Sungbae.
"I think they look friendly," she whispered, already heading toward the pair of college girls near the bubble tea shop. The camera trailed after them, catching every moment.
As Yura approached, the two girls looked up from their drinks, their expressions shifting from casual to stunned the moment they recognized her.
"Oh my gosh… is that…?" one of them whispered.
"Seo Yura? And… wait, is that Minjae?!" the other gasped, nudging her friend.
Yura bowed slightly and smiled. "Hi! Sorry to bother you—we're filming a show right now and just wanted to ask you something."
Minjae stepped forward, bowing politely as well. "It's for a mission. Would you mind helping us out?"
The girls blinked rapidly, clearly starstruck, and nodded in unison.
"Y-Yes! Of course!"
"Great!" Yura grinned as she looked at the two behind her.
The three counted in unison before asking the question.
"So the question is… what do you recommend for lunch today?"
The girls looked at each other, then giggled.
"Cold noodles. Definitely cold noodles."
The moment the words left their lips, all three members of Team Yellow let out collective groans.
"Cold noodles? Noooo!" Yura slumped dramatically.
"I knew it," Sungbae muttered, shaking his head in playful defeat. "It had to be something cold in this freezing weather."
Minjae chuckled, half-resigned. "It's like they're testing our willpower."
Even with the wrong answer, the three were still grateful to the girls who answered. They took a selfie together and said their thank you before moving.
Behind them, the PD who was following their team spoke up with a teasing smile.
"Mission failed. You know the rules, everyone. Please eat the recommended food before asking the next person."
The staff held out the voucher envelope with a knowing grin.
"It's fine," Minjae said with a shrug. "Let's eat first. It's still food."
Yura laughed as they started walking toward the nearest noodle place. "At least cold noodles taste good."
"I'll keep telling myself that as I freeze my throat," Sungbae muttered.
The camera caught all three of them walking into a nearby restaurant, their breath visible in the cold air and their laughter trailing behind them.
Even though they didn't succeed right away, their spirits remained high, and the energy between them stayed warm.
It was still early and they knew that the other teams wouldn't immediately succeed either.
On the other hand, the red team was also able to quickly find someone to ask. They had taken a different route. They walked toward a busier part of the neighborhood where the foot traffic was higher.
Their cameraman jogged lightly behind them as they waved to passing pedestrians, some of whom were already pulling out their phones with excited expressions.
"Let's ask someone over there by the convenience store," Jaehyun said, pointing to the side. "There's a family with kids. They might give a more common answer."
"We're looking for jjajangmyeon, right?" she clarified.
"Yep. Black bean noodles," Jaehyun nodded, slipping his hands into his coat pockets. "A classic. We just need one person to say it."
They crossed the small street and approached the family. It was a mother, a father, and two kids bundled up in puffy winter coats. The parents smiled as the crew approached, clearly recognizing Jaehyun.
"Ah, it's Yoo Jaehyun-ssi!" the father said, bowing slightly. "Are you filming Off Track here today?"
"We are, SIr!" Jaehyun beamed. "Do you have a moment for a quick question?"
"Of course," the mother answered, adjusting her daughter's scarf.
Rina stepped forward with a hopeful look. "Here's our question: What do you recommend for lunch today?"
The couple looked at each other, thoughtful. The mother smiled and said, "Jjajangmyeon. We were actually just talking about ordering some."
Rina and Jaehyun froze.
"No way," Rina whispered dramatically.
Jaehyun burst into a loud cheer, spinning on the spot and raising both arms into the air. "WE GOT IT! WE GOT IT!"
The kids clapped along, even though they weren't quite sure what had happened.
The camera panned in on Rina's shocked face, then back to the PD who was following them.
"Team Red, mission complete," the PD confirmed, laughing.
Jaehyun bowed deeply to the family. "Thank you so much!"
Rina offered her hand for a high five to the little girl.
"You saved us."
The family laughed, and the team took a quick photo with them before heading back to the base camp.
Meanwhile, back at the cold noodle shop, Team Yellow was still halfway through their meal.
"Wait, already?" Sungbae blinked as he saw the update from the staff's comms. "They finished it?"
Yura slumped over the table dramatically. "They got jjajangmyeon this fast?!"
Minjae leaned back in his chair, still holding a pair of metal chopsticks with cold noodles dangling off the edge.
"Are you serious?" he muttered, eyes wide with disbelief.
Yura let her head fall against the table with a loud, theatrical sigh.
"They were so lucky."
"Jaehyun-hyung is really lucky." Sungbae said with mock bitterness, slurping another icy bite. "We can't beat that."
The cameraman zoomed in on Yura's tragic expression as she poked at her half-eaten bowl. "This is cruel."
Minjae chuckled quietly, shaking his head. "Let's just finish this quickly and try again. There's still second place."
Meanwhile, Team Blue was also mid-meal.
Joohwan was wiping his forehead despite the cold. "Kimchi stew in this weather makes sense until you're on your third bowl."
Jihoon leaned over the bubbling pot with a determined expression. "We're doing this for the mission, hyung."
"For the mission?" Joohwan gave him a side-eye. "We kept getting kimchi stew for an answer"
"It's fine hyung. I'm sure they're also having a hard time." Jihoon grinned.
However, it wasn't long before a staff member standing nearby cleared his throat.
"Team Red has already completed the mission."
Joohwan and Jihoon both froze.
"Wait, what?" they said in unison.
"Jaehyun-ssi's team?" Jihoon blinked, stunned. "Already?"
"Someone recommended jjajangmyeon on their first try." The staff nodded with a grin.
"That's ridiculous. Who even recommends jjajangmyeon randomly? Did he bribe someone?" Joohwan set down his spoon and leaned back with a groan
"Nope. Apparently it was a mom, and she was already planning to order it."
Jihoon slumped against the table dramatically.
"We lost, Hyung."
"We still have a shot at second place," Joohwan said, sitting up again. "Come on. Let's finish this, then hit the streets. We only need one miracle."
The camera cut to a wide shot of both Team Blue and Team Yellow still stuck in their missions—one on cold noodles, the other on stew, while Team Red comfortably ate jjajangmyeon.
