Chapter 48: Cat and Mouse
....
Elten returned to the Academy, to a space assigned to him. The space was completely dark, with not even a flicker of light visible.
"How was he?" A voice came from the darkness the moment Elten entered.
"He was better than I expected," Elten lazily answered. "I also received an unexpected gift from him, it seems."
The moment he finished speaking, the Skeletons arrived, carrying Lilian's body. For a moment, there was only silence. A shocked gasp could be clearly heard in the silence.
"Is that...?" The voice was unable to hide its surprise. "Did you kill another professor?"
"It wasn't me this time," Elten yawned. "I already promised Father that I wouldn't kill another professor unless they tried to hurt me. They don't give me that opportunity, even if I try to provoke them."
He opened a drawer, finding its precise location despite the darkness, as if he could see everything there.
"Are we going somewhere?" the voice asked, watching Elten bring out the badge of the Ashborn Family that belonged to him.
For the most part, it was a useless badge that only signified Elten's identity as a pureblood Ashborn. However, there was something special about it.
It had a hidden formation that allowed Elten to gain access to the Ashborn Family's battleship. He rarely used it, so it was simply collecting dust there.
"We need to leave for a week, before the Dean realizes that she has the wrong corpse and seals the space to prevent me from leaving. That transformation spell won't last long," Elten said, swiftly opening a formation to their battleship.
"It should take a week to bring Lilian back as an Undead. After that, I can always return. The Dean can't do much after that point. Oh right, while you're at it, write a few leave applications for me and get someone to deliver one to the Dean's office."
"You... And here I was wondering how that woman allowed you to take a Professor's body after she went so far to stop you last time..." There was a deep sigh, followed by the sound of a pen moving over paper.
Once the week-long leave application was written, he rolled the letter into a scroll and placed it in the mouth of a zombie bird.
The bird flew out of the place, finding its way out of this space. It went straight to the Dean's office, instead of her official residence.
Meanwhile, Elten also finished his preparations and opened a portal to the docks where the Ashborn Family's battleship was docked.
He used the badge to open the gates of the ship and entered, accompanied by the Skeletons that were carrying Lilian's body. The ship started rising, and soon it left the Dimensional Realm, its destination unknown.
From the moment Elten left Elias, to the moment he left the Dimensional Realm, it didn't even take half an hour.
A few more hours passed from that moment onwards. The Dean's face grew blank as she stared at Lilian's corpse that she had brought.
The transformation was being undone as the time limit had passed, and the body was returning to its real form. It wasn't Lilian's body! It was just a random corpse that had almost been rotting.
"Elten!!!" She roared, watching Lilian's face change.
She reacted quickly, realizing what had just happened. She was fooled, and there was only one person who could have done this! She was wondering when Elten reached Frost World, but it was clear that he had been there before she even went there!
She quickly rose in the sky and sealed the space of the Dimensional Realm, before going to find Elten. However, the moment she reached there, she came to realize that she was too late.
Elten had already left the Dimensional Realm. A leave application was sent to Freya's office, but another was left on the stone table in his room.
"Respected Dean, I seem to be a little homesick. It seems I don't have any classes to teach for the next week, so I thought I would go and stay with my family for a week. I should be back in a week."
Freya clenched her fist, crushing the leave application, if it could even be called that. She went to check the docks and saw that the Ashborn Family's battleship was missing.
"You evil Ashborns!"
....
Elten had already gone far from Freya's reach. While the ship traveled through space, its next destination was already fed to the automated systems.
He started preparing for the completion of the undead ceremony.
"Do you think Freya will take her anger out on the little guy?" the voice came again, questioning Elten.
"I don't think she has the time for that. Don't you know what's coming for her? It would be wise for her to care about her own matters at the moment. It's not as if going after the little one will change anything for her."
"That does make sense." The voice seemed to be in agreement. "By the way, did you give him that thing?"
Elten was busy with his preparations when he froze in place at the question.
"You forgot, didn't you?" the voice asked. "That's why I told you to get some rest. Your mind simply stops working when needed."
"I was distracted by Lilian's corpse. Freya also arrived so suddenly. You can't blame me for forgetting," Elten answered, realizing that he had made a little mistake.
"Isn't that the only thing Aliath asked you to do not long before he went missing?"
Elten frowned. For a moment, it appeared as if the sleepiness in his eyes had disappeared and he gained seriousness again.
"I will give it to him after I return. It's only a week. It's not as if the world will fall apart if he doesn't have it for a week. That thing doesn't seem to have any particular use after all."
He brought out a knife, distracting himself from his mistake. He shifted his entire focus to carving his seal onto Lilian's skin, which was one of the most crucial steps in the undead ceremony.
The voice didn't ask any more questions. Only the sound of footsteps could be heard, as if the other person was walking away. "I hope so."
