Legacy of the Stars

Chapter 21: The Final Round Begins

The air in the room was thick with tension as Liu Cheng leaned back in his chair, the weight of Phantom's ominous message pressing down on him. The rest of the team gathered around, their faces a mixture of worry and determination.

"What does Phantom mean by 'the final round'?" Lin Mei asked, her arms crossed.

"It means they're ready to escalate," Liu Cheng replied. "And if we're not careful, this could be the end—not just for us, but for the tournament."

Jiang Yan adjusted his glasses and frowned. "They've been ten steps ahead of us this entire time. Even with the data we stole, we still don't know their ultimate goal."

Zhang Wei slammed his fist on the table. "Then we stop reacting and start acting. We can't let them keep pulling the strings."

Liu Cheng nodded. "Agreed. But we can't rush into this blindly. If Phantom wants to play their final round, we'll make sure it's on our terms."

A Desperate Gamble

Later that evening, Liu Cheng and Lin Mei secluded themselves in a private conference room, analyzing the stolen data. The files were extensive—match logs, player profiles, and even communication records between tournament officials.

"There's something here," Liu Cheng muttered, his eyes scanning the screen. "Look at this."

Lin Mei leaned closer, her brow furrowing. "These are encrypted messages between Phantom and… someone inside the tournament administration."

Liu Cheng nodded grimly. "They're working with an insider. That's how they've been able to infiltrate the system so easily."

"Do you recognize the name?" Lin Mei asked, pointing to a code identifier in the file: X-99.

"No," Liu Cheng said. "But if we can figure out who they are, we might be able to expose Phantom's entire operation."

Lin Mei hesitated. "That's risky. If they realize we're onto them, they'll retaliate."

"They're going to retaliate either way," Liu Cheng replied. "The question is whether we're ready when they do."

The Semi-Final Match

The semi-finals of the tournament were set to take place in a virtual cityscape—a sprawling, neon-lit metropolis with towering skyscrapers and narrow alleyways. It was a dynamic arena, designed to test both strategic thinking and individual skill.

As the team prepared for the match, the weight of their dual mission—winning the tournament and uncovering Phantom's identity—hung heavily over them.

"Remember," Liu Cheng said, addressing the team. "This isn't just about beating the other team. Stay alert. Phantom might try something during the match."

"Let them try," Zhang Wei said, cracking his knuckles. "We'll be ready."

The team entered the arena, their avatars materializing on a rooftop overlooking the city. The countdown began, and Liu Cheng's mind raced as he reviewed their strategy one last time.

---

Phantom's Move

The match started smoothly. Glory International executed their plan with precision, securing key points across the map and forcing their opponents into a defensive position. But as the timer hit the halfway mark, the arena began to glitch.

"What's happening?" Jiang Yan's voice crackled through the comms.

The neon lights flickered, and entire sections of the city disappeared, replaced by a black void. Enemy avatars moved erratically, their actions defying the game's mechanics.

"It's Phantom," Lin Mei said, her tone tense. "They're interfering again."

"Focus!" Liu Cheng commanded. "Stick to the plan. We can still win this."

But Phantom wasn't done. The glitches became more aggressive, targeting Glory International specifically. Liu Cheng's screen flashed with a message mid-match:

"You can't win, Strategist. Surrender now."

Liu Cheng's jaw tightened. "Not a chance."

---

Fighting Back

Despite the chaos, Liu Cheng's leadership kept the team together. He adapted their strategy on the fly, using the glitches to their advantage whenever possible.

"Jiang Yan, take the south quadrant. Lin Mei, cover his flank. Zhang Wei, hold the central tower. I'll handle the north."

As the team executed Liu Cheng's orders, the tide of the match began to turn. Their opponents, thrown off by Phantom's interference, struggled to keep up.

"We've got this," Lin Mei said, her voice filled with determination.

But just as victory seemed within reach, the arena froze. A new message appeared on everyone's screen:

"You've forced my hand. Let's see how you handle this."

Suddenly, a massive, AI-controlled avatar materialized in the center of the map. Its design was menacing—an amalgamation of mechanical and organic elements, with glowing red eyes and razor-sharp claws.

"What the hell is that?" Zhang Wei shouted.

"It's Phantom's trump card," Liu Cheng said. "An unkillable boss designed to wipe us out."

---

The Final Push

The team rallied, their movements synchronized as they fought against the AI avatar. It was unlike anything they'd faced before—its attacks were relentless, and it adapted to their strategies with terrifying speed.

"Liu, we can't beat this thing!" Lin Mei yelled.

"Yes, we can," Liu Cheng replied. "It's not invincible. Look for patterns. Every program has a weakness."

Jiang Yan analyzed the avatar's movements. "It pauses for half a second after each attack. That might be our opening."

"Good," Liu Cheng said. "Zhang Wei, draw its fire. Lin Mei and Jiang Yan, hit its core during the pause. I'll look for a way to disable it."

The team executed the plan, chipping away at the avatar's defenses. Meanwhile, Liu Cheng hacked into the system, searching for a backdoor Phantom might have left.

"I've found it!" he shouted. "Give me thirty seconds!"

"Make it twenty," Zhang Wei grunted, dodging a massive swipe from the avatar.

Liu Cheng's fingers flew across the keyboard as he bypassed Phantom's encryption. With a final keystroke, he activated a shutdown command.

The avatar froze, its glowing eyes dimming before it disintegrated into pixels. The arena stabilized, and the victory screen flashed across their monitors.

The Aftermath

The team emerged from the virtual arena, their bodies drenched in sweat despite being in the real world. The room was silent as they processed what had just happened.

"We did it," Lin Mei said, her voice barely above a whisper.

"But at what cost?" Jiang Yan asked. "Phantom's not going to stop here."

Liu Cheng stared at the encrypted message on his laptop. "Well played, Strategist. But the game isn't over yet."

He turned to his team, his expression resolute. "This isn't just a game anymore. Phantom's playing for keeps, and so are we. We end this at the finals."
